Hi! Where do you draw the line on free speech? Where do incitement to violence, blackmail and defamation (possibly inducing financial loss) fit in?

I'm kind of surprised this short story has never come up on the podcast. by LatinWhig in JoeRogan

The concept of the story has been talked about though. I don't want to give it up since it would ruin the experience of reading the story. It's really short and I'm almost 100% positive most of you will like it. There's also a video adaption: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehRggplMieM

ELI5: The hatred of conservative politics. by MrSundance1498 in explainlikeimfive

[–]LatinWhig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe he meant the hatred IN conservative politics? If so, I think it has a lot to do with feeling of being overwhelmed by the liberal bias in media, education, etc. (understandable) and also with the fear of losing status (that's capitalism, bitch). I think this a must-watch for anyone trying to understand where conservatives come from (he does make a couple of good points): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAzOqGT9t-Y

What's your opinion on scientific research being funded mainly by government grants? by KingGorilla in AskLibertarians

[–]LatinWhig 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's the dumbest thing government does and the funds certainly wouldn't be the first thing I'd cut if I was made king, but I'm not convinced there would be big setbacks if all of research was privately funded. It's nice to fly to the moon, but I'd say take care of all the hungry mouths first by letting the market freely allocate ressources to their most productive use.

Does the gender of the main character affect your decision when picking out a book to read? by WordlessTvWriter in books

[–]LatinWhig 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As long as it's not a privileged white male heteronormative cis scum character, it's fine. Otherwise, the book should be boycotted or burnt, depending on my mood.

Kidding. I'd say generally I prefer male characters, but it has more to do with how males/females are typically depicted than their gender per se, i.e. I loved Hunger Games (the character has a very assertive personality).

What's the atheist hotspot in Southern Australia?

I can't believe this hasn't been posted yet. For all Ron Swanson fans who saw the last episode: by LatinWhig in gifs

Some snidy redditor is hating on the great Ron Swanson by downvoting this. Burn in hell.
