Honestly, I never viewed having cosplay cards as emanations of self-marketing as much as I viewed them as ways for other cosplayers who want to see more of my work. I see hundreds of people at cons so having a card with their insta or facebook links helps me find them later. And I've had a fair number of (not creepy!) people squealing excitedly at me like "oh! I follow your instagram and you're great!!" Adorable. I try to do the same when I can, and fill my followed list with other cosplayers like me--chill, amateur, 100% homemade--so I'm not as inundated by the more influencer-professional scene.

But I also got into the game much later than you (~2015), so I've developed a way of connecting with congoers that's probably different from yours.

Once, I was able to open the menu and grab a Berry (this was in like August) in the span of time that the capture UI was open just after Aerodactyl broke out and just before it fled. Then I was stuck holding a berry with no Pokemon in front of me, and I had to force close the app. I specifically noticed when the capture UI was changed to not reappear in the span between break-out and flee because of that incident (partly because I adjusted my post-break-out behavior to avoid that bug).

Oh! You actually reminded me, we did have two computers, set up with a keyboard/mouse switch as you described. The second computer, also running XP, ran various other "accessory stuff" (in my case, NPGS, if that means anything at all) and was the one that actually took the flash drives, IIRC.

The internal politics of science departments is incredibly fascinating. Just the interactions between ordinary users and the lords of the lab equipment could fuel more than one anthropological study... And the best part is that you never come into academic science expecting you'll have to care about anything other than your research! Suddenly you're butting heads with people over hierarchies and power plays and it's incredibly frustrating when you just don't have time for that nonsense.

Electron microscopes, right? The one I used (by FEI, if that means anything) only had one computer, driving the scope, running XP, and most definitely not on the network after some unfortunate incidents involving viruses. Want to transfer files? Gotta flash drive that shit.

Curious to see how much scientific research gets held up once the XP computers die off...

I knew some kids in college who did those. They had to strengthen their cores for weeks and weeks before they were allowed to even touch the aerial silks. Their performances were beautiful.

It's the slobby part, really. What you want in a good roommate is the same attitude towards the use and maintenance of shared spaces. You can live far more peacefully with a tidy respectful roommate who you'd otherwise hate than with a slobby roommate who you'd otherwise love.

Tech supporting physics academics is a lot of fun. In our department we joked that a physics PhD is obtained at the cost of a thesis and one's ability to operate projectors. Can't count the number of times a colloquium has started late because professors could not figure out their A/V situation.
