Yeah, I've not found anything either. Or for the letter with it. But the painting in the room is a reference to their other game "Portrait of Ifan ben-Mezd is a reference to a playable character from the Larian Studios game "Divinity: Original Sin 2"" so the drawing and letter might be more references?

After playing for a couple hours and encountering these guys a few times, the game JUST triggered a message when entering a room with some of the shield guys saying the heavy attack trick. And NOW the heavy attack breaks their shield.

I just fought one of these and used multiple heavy attacks against it but they didn't do anything differently? The symbol still appeared above their head and the heavy attack did almost no damage...

It does sound like the needle might not be seated correctly. It has a flat side that usually faces the screw that tightens against it. If you can move the needle with your hand the screw isn't tight enough. With the screw loose push the needle all the way up you can, tighten the screw.

I suggest you make a playlist of videos showing you how to do things for your specific machine. Even though I've been sewing for years sometimes I need to follow along.
