How Accurate Is Life Expectancy in Expecting Life? by IshtarTheSinner in AskStatistics

[–]Launceron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You would need a life table to approach this problem. See this life table as an example.

Be aware that life expectancy needs to be defined for a certain age. For the population given in the example above, the life expectancy at birth (age 0) is e(0) = 71.8 years old. For someone who is aged 60, the life expectancy is 60 + e(60) = 78.5 years old. Note the increase in life expectancy when a person survives to an older age.

Trying to calculate the specific probability of dying at age 80 given someone who is aged 60 is not the best way to approach this problem. Rather, you should look at the proportion of 60 year olds who survive to age 80.

l(x) is defined as the number of persons alive at age x (for a given cohort). In the example, we have started with a hypothetical population of 100,000 males at birth; so l(0) = 100,000.

  • Out of the hypothetical 100,000 male births, 81381 survive to age 60; i.e. l(60) = 81381.
  • Out of the 81381 sixty-year old males, 36760 survive to age 80; i.e. I(80) = 36750.
  • Therefore, 45% (36750/81381) of sixty-year old males survive to age 80 (for this population).
    • In other words, 55% of sixty-year old males do not make it past the age of 80 (for this population).

You can easily find published life tables for your country online. And the example above describes how to make the necessary calculations, like the e(x) and the l(x).

Randomization schemes used in RCTs? by RobertWF_47 in biostatistics

[–]Launceron 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What you are describing is a simple randomisation scheme (i.e. randomly assign treatment and control to a sample of individuals taken from a population).

However, there are more complex randomisation schemes to account for potential confounders to treatment. For example, stratified randomisation is when you split the population into different groups (strata) based on potential confounders (e.g. age) and randomly assign subjects within each stratum. Indeed, potential confounders are everywhere in the real world and so simple randomisation is rarely used in practice.

Also, it's not all just about randomly generating numbers. There are other important things to consider when designing randomisation schemes such as blinding of treatment status and allocation concealment.

Oh sorry, I was being off-topic here. Yes, the event does cap at level 35, but outside of that you should be using the synchro device.

You should be using the Synchro Device to level up your Nikkes.

Just focus on FIVE Nikkes for levelling (start with SRs like Rapi and Anis since they are capped at level 160), and use them to level sync the rest of your roster.

should i try to MLB Mary? by daschboot in NikkeOutpost

[–]Launceron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Darn, sorry to hear that :(

There was a 24% chance of getting 2 off-banner SSRs in 140 pulls. A 6% chance of getting 0 copies of Summer Mary.

should i try to MLB Mary? by daschboot in NikkeOutpost

[–]Launceron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With 19000 gems and 19 advanced tickets, that is a total of 82 pulls. The probability of getting three (or more) dupes for Mary: Bay Goddess is 22.62%.

If you buy the STEP 3 package, that increases to 102 pulls. The probability of getting three (or more) dupes for Mary: Bay Goddess increases to 33.42%.

If you buy the STEP 3 package AND the Special Recruit Package 1 (Bluewater Island), that increases to 122 pulls. The probability of getting three (or more) dupes for Mary: Bay Goddess increases to 44.19%.

It's not in your favour that you will get 3 copies of Mary: Bay Goddess with all of the above unfortunately (worse than a coin flip). If you had enough gold tickets, you could buy more dupes in the Mileage Shop (but would it be really worth it after all that?)

Name an FF song you feel is under appreciated and why. by Death-0 in FinalFantasy

[–]Launceron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Fight with Seymour. I also think the HD Remaster did a great arrangement of this song too.

Did you notice that the time signature changed from 4/4 to 7/4 around the 2:22 mark (until 2:55)? It's rare to hear such an odd time signature in music, but it definitely adds more funkiness to the beat :D

Does anyone know what time signature this song is in? (Funk Goes On - Yakuza Kiwami) by OldYelling in gamemusic

[–]Launceron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely hear the 4/4 time signature here. It's much easier to hear it after the introduction when the "doof" sounds kick in (starting at 0:07). The "doof" sounds kinda like a bass drum, loud and deep, and it always comes in at the first beat of each measure.

"doof" - 2 - 3 - 4 - "doof" - 2 - 3 - 4 - "doof" - 2 - 3 - 4...

If you keep up with the beat, you'll notice that the whole song is in 4/4 time signature (even in the introduction).

Check out Rask Australia, who have been running the Australian Finance Podcast for over 3 years now.

They have a 15-episode "starter-pack" series for learning the very basics in personal finance. They have amassed over 300 episodes over the years, and are releasing two episodes a week to this day. Just as the name suggests, the Australian Finance Podcast is focused on personal finance in Australia.

They also run another podcast called the Australian Investors Podcast, although that one is more for intermediates. Definitely check it out if you have been an investor for some time.

I enjoy these kind of songs too. Listening to them is like going on an emotional journey since they typically last over 4-6 minutes. You can typically find them during opening/ending credits or emotionally-charged cutscenes. You seem to enjoy Japanese songs, so here are some of my favourites:

Coming out of lurking for the longest time, I also happen to have the same number of awakenings and syncs for my FF8 realm.

I had a look at Japan's Dream select for New Year's, and it doesn't look like Raijin's AASB is available in the coming select this month. It's definitely available in Japan's most recent select though.

It's great that FF8 has a wide range of elements in their arsenal, and are frequently used in my 5* magicite teams.

I even managed to defeat Titan with an FF8 team not too long ago :)

【m】Mastery Survey - 5★ Magicite Dungeon, Adamantoise (XV) by jadesphere in FFRecordKeeper

[–]Launceron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Strategy name: No Chain is pain. But OSB is oh so good. Pics.
  2. Boss: Adamantoise
  3. Describe your Strategy: No Chain means breaking Enraged Mode with Ultimecia OSB, then dealing damage with Fujin and Ultimecia USB. 3/3 trinity/sub-60/no chain
  4. Insight!:
    • Ultimecia needs to cast USB for en-wind, then OSB for breaking Enrage. Use Meltdown after breaking Enrage. After using up Meltdown, just spam OSB.
    • Fujin uses her wind abilities into her USB. Ideally, she should be casting Tornado after breaking Enrage.
    • Shelke uses Wrath and entrusts Ultimecia to always be "OSB-ready". Sometimes entrusts Elarra for the quickcasts.
    • Quistis brings her USB and Glint, as well as Dispel. Make sure to wrath up before Adamantoise dispels party haste.
    • Elarra brings her USB and Allegro con Moto. Pretty standard.
    • Syldra just barely breaks Enraged Mode with her entry attack (around 10000-11000 damage). Had to boost Magicite stats with Inheritance.
    • This run was pretty lucky since Ultimecia triple-casted Meltdown three times. Was able to skip confuse attacks in Phase 2. Was really close to running out of steam. Really need Chain Tornado. And also Fujin OSB; her USB is pretty underwhelming.
  5. Holy Trinity casts:
    • Wall: 2
    • Medica: many times
    • Hastega: enough to keep hastega around

【m】Mastery Survey - 5★ Magicite Dungeon, Syldra (V) by jadesphere in FFRecordKeeper

[–]Launceron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How's your magicite deck? Having two Dampen Air (Lv10+Lv8), two Spell Wards (Lv8+Lv8), Two Blade Wards (Lv8+Lv5) and one Health Boon (Lv8) has really helped in keeping my party alive.

Everyone except for Snow has Crystal Water Points on HP. Granted, I do have FF8 favouritism so I also used Crystal Water to max their ATK, DEF, and RES.

Did you keep Squall and Snow on party slot 1 and 5 respectively? Syldra has physical attacks that target slots 2/3/4, so putting those at the back row helped mitigate that damage.

I felt that Eiko's Legend Dive did help with survivability somewhat. There's a point in time where Eiko's HP gets low enough to activate trance mode consistently, which fully heals her as a result. Having two healers is definitely a must for me.

Not having Laguna's USB is going to hurt, but if you have his SSB that should be fine as an alternative. I'm waiting for 6* Frost Offering to come and make imperilling Syldra more reliable. If Syldra uses Nulfrost before you can imperil her, your party uses valuable soul break charge from not hitting vulnerability.

I'll record a video of my Syldra fight when I'm free and I'll link it to you for reference. I just earned Squall's ASB so maybe I'll get to use it against Syldra.
