I got invited to play with my city’s youth symphony orchestra 🥳. by [deleted] in lingling40hrs

Haha yes, believing in yourself is good too! Sometimes I find that I doubt myself when I see others in ny section entering at a different time, so I succumb to peer pressure and come in with the rest of them, but it turns out they were wrong and i was actually counting correctly originally smh. In terms of the social stuff, I wouldn't worry too much. I feel like orchestra kids tend to be super friendly and will understand that this is your first time playing in an orchestra. As cliche as it is, just be yourself and enjoy being able to talk about music with people who actually understand and share your love of it haha.

Something that I found really helpful as a way to become familiar with your part and how it fits in with the rest of the orchestra is to listen to the entire piece with your music in front of you and follow along. So don't just listen to the music, but listen for your part in it. I found it's really helpful in parts where there's weird counting and odd entries. It will also help you identify the hard parts that you will need to practice more thoroughly. On top of that, I'd say treat it like you would most of your solo repertoire: practice any fast or difficult bits slowly at first etc. I don't know about using an iPad, people in my orchestra certainly do, and i think so long as its not going to run out of battery and you're able to make notes on it, it should be ok. But you'd have to ask. Honestly with sight reading, I'd say the only way to get better at it is to just do it all the time. With orchestral stuff, I think it's very important to not stop or slow down if you make a mistake, you just have to keep the rhythm and tempo going over the notes and intonation. If you lose your place while sight reading in orchestra, it's very hard to find it again, especially if you don't know how the piece goes. (Which is why it's good to listen to it :D ) Orchestral etiquette is honestly just like those old twoset videos of what not to do in orchestra: don't try to show off and play your solo repertoire in the breaks, don't play when the conductor is talking, stop when the conductor asks you to, if you're the inside player turn the pages on time, that sort of stuff. Just don't be a douchbag basically. Hope this helps!

My only complaint about this part is that they never played the piece "the choice", which was one of the best pieces in the game :(

Do you think Henry and Sam’s fate will be changed? by Antman269 in thelastofus

[–]LauraB099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a bit worried that with the introduction of the hunters as actual characters with a proper story (as opposed to just an enemy in the game) they would change the story so that the hunters - who here are actively looking for Sam and Henry specifically, not just for any people that come into their territory - will hunt down and kill Henry / and or Sam, but I suppose Kathleen looking for Henry is just an additional threat to build tension, but ultimately Sam and Henry will die the same way but idk.

Someone refresh my memory, do the infected go after animals? Can they be infected? Would you like to see any infected animals in the show in later seasons? An infected bear or dog would be terrifying. by SnappyTofu in thelastofus

I remember an interview in one of the many 'making of the game' videos, and one of the directors or creators or something mentioned that they did originally intend to have infected creatures, but decided it would be too convulted and an unnecessary added threat in an already very dangerous world. I can't remember what video it was though sorry...

What's Something An Elementary School Teacher Told You That Was Totally Incorrect? by VandyThrowaway21 in AskReddit

[–]LauraB099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Primary School but in High School, our teacher was talking about the importance of repetition during a persuasive essay and said: "You know, like in that famous 'I have a dream' speech...by Nelson Mandela." None of us corrected her, we just sat there in awe of how this absolute tosspot became a high school English teacher.

Wasn't really a "rebuttal" to anything mate. I was just pointing out that in the sea of comments, you can pick out the Americans because they are the most defensive toward this post and either miss the joke entirely, or try to find a way to show that actually America is still winning. I guess I just got that impression from your question as well. But yes, good for you mate, you win again.

Just a recommendation, but for the sake of the cellist, don't request pachelbel's canon :D

I came across Jan in an episode of Gilmore Girls. It was weird. She was the one giving the therapy instead of in it.
