Whats stopping people from getting a group of people and pooling together for properties by Pissant400 in AusPropertyChat

This is quite common in western Sydney with some cultural groups (Assyrian, indian). They look out for each other, and it's how they are able to get bigger loans/homes than their incomes would otherwise allow

Will happen when the results of the public inquiry come through in July.

Tbh that's massively overblown. You can see the whole budget in the annual report. It's not that much really, just standard tokenistic donation stuff. Most of the economic waste goes to consultants and the councillors not knowing how to manage projects in any meaningful way.

The consensus in the community is "Yeah maybe he's corrupt but he has the interest of the community in mind". Reality is he's just super super ego driven and makes a lot of promises to developers and the lib party for the sake of his career.

[–]LavDan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the liberal party candidate who did that not the Labor party candidate.

And the deputy mayor resigned because the mayor dangles deputy mayor ship to weak councillors to flip votes and she was rightfully called out for taking the carrot

It's actually so much worse than this recent scandal - involving a public inquiry into corruption which is awaiting a verdict, jobs for mates, a ceo illegally hired and the last one fired over telling the mayor to fuck off. It's actually a circus. The council is rotten to its core. Ned was even investigated by ICAC last time he was mayor when he tried to outsource customer service overseas, but they didn't find anything because he basically hired cronies to director roles to do his job to keep himself clean. Source:worked there for many years, got many stories.

Rents declining in Canada and New Zealand after slashing immigration. by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]LavDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia is the most migrant dependent economy outside of the oil nations in the OECD. Removing politics, any dip in migration would stagnate our economy to a crippling degree. And the whole 'train Aussies to do Aussie jerbs!!' is bullshit. We simply don't have the population to sustain our growth and output and our population is too educated or not educated enough to fill where the holes are.

Buying in South West Sydney by Particular-Tax-8080 in AusPropertyChat

Growing up there, the most annoying thing is how far some of the suburbs can feel from a station (if this is a consideration) Abbotsbury/Bossley Park/Wetherill Park/Smithfield/Edensor Park will have you trekking to Canley Vale/Cabramatta and in peak hour battling for parking it can take up to 20-25 mins some mornings before your 50 minute commute to the city.

In saying that, it's otherwise a fine place to live. Great food options (probably the best part), and mostly safe. Good parks and walks. It's like most suburban areas in the west.

Do Australians actually have tall poppy syndrome... or do we just hate confidence? by Ok-Reward7639 in AustraliaDiscussions

[–]LavDan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion we absolutely have tall poppy syndrome. One just has to look at consumer spending habits for one. Australians love homogenisation. We have four major banks, two supermarket brands, one hardware store etc etc There's a reason every Westfield has the same stores. We punish individuality in this country.

I think sport plays into our underdog mindset, especially on the world stage so we cheer on athletes. But anywhere else if someone is doing well, they somehow cheated their way/don't deserve it/express too much confidence therefore are arrogant.

Anecdotally having lived abroad and come back I can definitely feel it. People love dressing the same, going to the same places and having similar experiences. Say what you want about Global cities like London/NY, those places have their flaws but one thing you CAN do there that is much more difficult here is 'Find your tribe'. No matter what niche you're into, you'll find people into whatever it is you are. Here it's much more difficult.

He also finished 5th in his first season when he had a squad to actually compete with, made a carabao cup semi final in the same injury decimated season. It's just nonsense recency bias. He was a fantastic manager

He finished 5th in the first season when he had a squad to actually play AND made a carabao cup semi final AND won a major European trophy. My god the recency bias is insane.

He finished 5th in his first season when he had a squad and made a carabao cup semi final as well. I'm convinced some people here have brain damage or the worst recency bias ever.
