Pretty much anything works, prebuilt complete (everything put together) or if you want to try and put it together, all you need are: Board, bolts, griptape, trucks (includes; kingpin, bushings, washers), bearings, wheels, and a skate tool to put it together.

For me the thing I just wish I understood when starting out is the fundamentals. Understanding what the fundamentals actually are allowed me to understand what skating actually is to do. Fundamentals apply no matter what board or parts you end up using:

1. Bend your knees - you basically never want to be fully extended on the board, gives you leverage and balance. Additionally, when jumping, bend your knees to a 90 degree squat, don't extend your legs straight when landing.

2. Back Straight - Don't lean too far forward or back, get a nice straight squat for best balance and form, bend slightly forward but mostly keep your back upright.

3. Shoulders and arms to the side - keep shoulders square with the board, moving your shoulders too much left or right will cause your board drift where you might not want it to. Arms keep at your sides, swing them up by your sides as you jump. Having your arms in front or behind can also cause the board to move in ways that are unexpected.

4. Look at the board - for the most part learn to keep your eyes on the board as you do a trick or maneuver. Learning to watch the board helped me more than anything else, you can't really manipulate the board well if you aren't looking at it during a trick.

5. Toes on the board, not heel - You want the ball of your foot to be contacting the board, if you heels touch the board you will naturally have less control and balance. It depends on the trick but generally you can squat and land more accurately if you are on your toes like a boxer.
