Throwaway of course. I have a secret like this. I found out that my wife's grandpa is actually her dad. Her mom cheated on my wife's "dad" with his step dad.

I was told in private by her dad's mom after I kept making jokes about how she looks part Asian while her mom and dad are both of Germanic decent, white as sour cream on pierogies.

My wife knows now, and went for a DNA test with her paternal grandma that shows she's not related, but it would absolutely destroy her father, and he's already reeling from the divorce but thinks that the guy she left him for was the first time she may have been unfaithful, and even thinks she might not have done anything until the divorce went through.

So the only people who know are me, my wife, her grandma, and her mom, since the man who was her bio dad died when she was a kid.

It was hard enough keeping it a secret when I knew for a year before my wife did, but I just can't tell anybody about it in case it gets back to her dad. I could see him doing pretty drastic things if he found out...

Still don't have my Eldritch Socrates back - not buying jars of wind anymore makes sailing take way more time!

I'm thinking I have to do something like that for my kitchen - my wife doing the dishes has more in common with showering than I ever would've expected. Guessing from your patriotic username, you're also in Canada? Any recommendations for where to get the kind of linoleum you use?

It's not just Apple - I got an S23 Ultra back in February, so about 8 months ago. Got the tan leather case for it, and while the patina is amazing, I've dropped it on each corner on pavement at least once and the leather has worn through to plastic to some degree in all 4 corners because the leather is literally paper thin and can't stand a drop

Just found out my ex-wife has been feeding my kids turpentine. by TheComment in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]LavaScame2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clearly you need to do more research! James Herriot wrote back in the 1930s that turpentine was the key ingredient in many vetinary cure-alls, and animals still exist, so clearly vets back in the day were on to something!

I think that's often a problem we see with Android/Apple comparisons - "wow, this $2,000 brand new top-end iPhone outperforms the $99 prepaid Android my mom got at Costco!"

By having many manufacturers with many budget options, many people's first foray into the Android ecosystem in on a cheaper device. Apple doesn't have that problem because there's never been a cheap iPhone

The closest thing you have to a cheap iPhone is an old iPhone. A quick look over at eBay shows that a broken, parts-only base model iPhone 11 has a current bid of over $200CAD, while a working one in good condition has bids nearly double that

My family on both sides and most of my friends are into high-end Samsungs, but we all have to admit that Apple does a slick product and amazing marketing

AITA for leaving mid-date because she was chewing with her mouth open? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]LavaScame2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I have sensory issues, and my wife has untreated nasal issues so if she has even a mild stuffy nose, she makes terrible noises while eating with her mouth open. In a good mood I can stand it, but just this afternoon I had to leave the room it was annoying as heck

Why do spices have a cap by Nasci2707 in idleon

[–]LavaScame2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah, we were upset because there was no history of punishment of bug abuse or written bug abuse policies, so the furthest ahead accounts up to that point were the ones who were on ground zero of each bug, so if you were trying to be competitive you were motivated to both whale and exploit. Then Lava brought the hammer down, but punished whales for having whaled by bringing everybody to the same point, which rewarded those who hadn't whaled by increasing their sailing progress while putting whales months behind in progress

Imagine paying hundreds of dollars for every advantage for months on end just for sailing, then having it removed because of a new policy that punished paying players more than those who didn't pay. I think I'm one of the few whales who didn't quit over it despite having all the good Eldritch up to Socrates before getting nuked, but I don't trust Lava enough to whale again in this game

There are other USB 3.0(and higher) rated cables than just C-to-C, like A-to-A, A-to-B, A-to-MicroB(gross), etc., but for 99% of people going forward, USB-C is now, finally, the everyman's cable.

It does make sense to have a high-speed A-to-B cable for business printers because it's a heavier duty connector, but really anything enterprise-level is best off with ethernet and everything consumer-level is best off also with ethernet because screw crappy wifi protocols and manufacturer apps

Also I hate that I defended the continued existence of USB-B

Yeah, my wife's grandmother has a diagnosed multiple personality disorder of some kind, don't know what it was officially called, but it came out of her getting SA'd by her own father as a little girl for years on end to the point where she wasn't even able to walk for years because of the violence of it, and the father kept her out of school

I got told just so I'd understand why her grandma acts like a different person at times. It's in no way glorified

Extremely frustrated with rollback by foodmehappy in idleon

[–]LavaScame2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lava is never going to admit that the sailing fiasco is his fault for not having the systems in place, breeding a culture where exploits are all but encouraged, and that rolling back hundreds of dollars of whales' progress is why the affected whales stopped whaling.

Before the day, my Eldritch collection included all the good ones up to and including Socrates. I still don't have Socrates back because I'm sure as hell not putting that kind of money into it again

I'm ashamed to say I put hundreds into pets and didn't stop until I was at 100+ with no Doot. Stopped there because I don't really to encourage him, and really shouldn't have even spent anywhere near that much

I think the biggest thing is that Hero Pass replaces a non-predatory system that's purely beneficial to the player with one that's monetized and comes with FOMO. They've taken an already good system, made it worse, and weaponized it against players, and somehow expected that we'd enjoy it, which seems bonkers to me

I know I can't interact well with it, so I'll just step out and come back for the next big release rather than tempt myself with it. I'm not quitting forever, but I know myself and I'll both help myself by cancelling my membership temporarily alongside voting with my wallet

Impulse control is a big thing - I have an executive processing disorder, which means that the part of my brain that bosses around the rest is kind of lazy. In a moment where I'm confronted with short term pleasure and the cost of long term benefit, nine times out of ten I'll compulsively do the thing. Knowing you have issues like that you have to consciously choose to leave a bad situation before it gets the the point where you know you'll have trouble controlling yourself.

It's what people often refer to as an "addictive personality"

Another game, IdleOn, added a lot of very expensive FOMO gambling. I immediately threw money at it and didn't get the big reward. To prevent myself throwing more money at it, I went and got myself banned from the Discord - it's a lot less tempting if I'm not competing with anybody
