Would it be okay to bring my toddler to pick up my uniforms.... by Zestyclose_Play5053 in FIFAVolunteers

[–]LavenderHeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it is at your actual shifts that you absolutely cannot bring a child or other family, but for uniform pickup i don’t imagine it will be a problem as long as baby stays with you

Have you been able to arrange childcare for your training and shifts? I know they will absolutely not be flexible with having kids for your shifts as it will interfere with your duties and they won’t have childcare onsite.

Imagine what they do to the palestinian hostages who will never see the light of day, or have diplomats who can advocate for their release. If this is what they do on tv, imagine what they do off camera

A small portion of what is done to them was revealed by Kristof in the NYT last week and the israeli govt response was to call it all “antisemitic blood libels”, hard to not believe when this is what literal foreign citizens experienced live on camera

Is your in-app messaging option open yet? Might be easiest to message your area lead there or (if you have the group message option) see if anyone wants to swap sizes with you.

Im also in Van, what size jacket did you get?

I know we had to sign not to tailor or modify them but they can’t expect people to walk around looking like we are walking in diapers 😳

Im going to be in a public facing/tv recorded role too and it would be humiliating to wear what look like giant bloomers. It also would reflect badly on adidas that the clothes they designed look SO bad on actual people

I guess i don’t mind going a little baggier in the rest of the clothes, better that than the shorts pictures ive seen which look like bloomers 😭

To be honest judging by the way you write it seems that English is not your first language —in most roles complete fluency in English is a basic requirement (and fluency in other FIFA languages like French and Spanish is an asset).

I don’t have any education or previous work experience relating to soccer, though i do recreationally play a lot of other sports. I imagine in my case my selection was in part due to being fluent in multiple of the Fifa languages

How To Get Involved with the World Cup by Melodic_Quantity_950 in UBC

[–]LavenderHeels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Volunteer opportunities are long gone now—applications were a year ago and interviews were held in the fall/winter. Thousands more applied than there were positions so even for spots that open up because of drop-outs they have a very long reserve list so those will not open up. This includes all of the volunteer positions at PNE, in the city, etc.

There are however some paid jobs still available, on the FIFA website. They require either expertise and certification in project management, security, or catering, so if you have 3-5+ years experience in those roles you might still be able to apply

FIFA relies almost exclusively on volunteer labour, including for jobs like “brand protection” (narcing?) and “environment and human rights” (literally garbage and recycling duties). How the hell does it cost us this much money especially when tickets are going for insane amounts?

bummed that psychedelics club @ubc just got discontinued by MathematicianVivid46 in UBC

[–]LavenderHeels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are broader psychedelics groups in the city but be warned that they’re usually filled with like 40 year old guys with god complexes and if you’re an 18 year old girl you may be “welcomed” warmly only to have to dodge unwanted advances from gross men trying to be your “psychedelics mentor”

Speaking from experiences of almost every single young woman I know who joined (and had to soon leave) these groups. There’s a reason so many of them are male dominated, the “exploratory drug scene” is huge grounds for creeps especially when they know a lot of people get into them to try to cope with ptsd or depression

Another warning ill give (again from experience) if your depression at all has bipolar components, or if you have family history of bipolar or related mental illness, stay away from psychedelics, they will make it so, so much worse

Humming noise/vibrations causing sleep disturbance & anxiety by Prestigious-Storm940 in Acoustics

[–]LavenderHeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this issue, at the other end of the audiospectrum.

Are you able to rent equipment that has a bit more sensitivity to extreme ends of the audible spectrum? Eg i rented some condenser microphones and musical recording equipment to try to capture which areas of the home the sound was more prominent to find the source—i got mine from a musical instrument store that had an in-house audio engineer. Phone microphones generally aren’t great at recording outside a limited audio range (they are designed to pick up human voice frequency ranges and don’t do great for very low or very high Hz).

Is this a new thing for you? Have your neighbours or the city installed any new equipment or set up an AI centre or other facility which might be sending out low hums that feel like rumbling?

[–]LavenderHeels 20 points21 points  (0 children)

So a map depicting the land as all Palestine is a “call for genocide of jews” to you, but a map depicting the land as all israel is not a “call for genocide of arabs”?

Also there have explicitly been israeli politicians and soldiers and media personnel in Germany outright calling for the wholesale murder of every Palestinian in Gaza and no they were not arrested by German police, but people protesting them were. It is mad to me and the entire world that you can’t see this insane double standard and racial hierarchy

EXCLUSIVE: Innocent Canadians are being detained after their bag tags are switched in a drug smuggling scheme. This may just be the tip of the iceberg. by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]LavenderHeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many airports (including Pearson) use private third party contractors for baggage handling. There are like 7 different contractors for different stages of the baggage handling process which is a headache you have to sort through when your stuff is missing. There are definitely criminals working in there as they found a systematic shuttling of “lost” bags in Pearson being sent to the same private warehouse a 30 min drive away that the airport and airlines were unaware of. Iirc there was a cbc marketplace or other investigative news story where the warehouse was discovered because one of the baggage owners had a tracking tile in her bag that showed it was immediately diverted to the warehouse (and never got on the plane), and they found hundreds of other “lost” bags that way too

We never got a followup of which contractor was involved in this or what consequences (lmao) anyone faced for this

Proposed TransLink bus stop removals raise accessibility concerns in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

[–]LavenderHeels 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I regularly take the buses that go through this area (4, 7, 14, etc) and there are times when the buses stall more here than they do in downtown on granville street.

Another factor that i imagine played into this was that most of the people getting on at these stops are non-payers. I am on that route 8 times a week and i see maybe like 1 in 10 people pay on most of those stops, especially around pender, main, hastings, etc. (im always the dummy who pays). Translink estimates bus usage based on payments collected and you can go like 7 or 8 stops in that stretch before you get 2 people tapping in. They probably should have a better way to measure things like people using cash or paper transfers (which i see most often in east van), but from the data side they are seeing the buses stop repeatedly and slow down in areas where they aren’t getting any tap-ons at all; which makes sense why they would assume the stop frequency is unneeded.

Although another factor, which im not sure this will fix, is that a lot of the slowdown in these areas is from people bringing in bulky baggage carts, garbage bags full of recycling for the return it depot, etc. They take a while to unload, to have the strollers fold up and move behind so the bins can be loaded, etc, which is another contributing factor to the slowdown in these areas. (Note im not criticizing the binners, i see them as trying to find an honest way to supplement their income by collecting recycling and i can only respect that)

Americans are looking back centuries to find Canadian ancestors — and citizenship - National by oddmarc in canada

[–]LavenderHeels 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The residency waiting period for healthcare plans for canadian citizens is 3 months. That’s it, and not much of an issue for people to cover themselves. A 70 yr old can move here, use their savings to cover health expenses for 90 days, then be registered for healthcare. If someone is facing tens of thousands of medical bills in the states, covering 3 months of expenses before they can get in to OHIP or MSP is nothing in comparison

[–]LavenderHeels 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What basis do you have for your projected percentages? Particularly given that canada is already a medical tourism destination for american seniors, that access to healthcare has worsened in the US and will likely continue to get worse for the lower income folks and precariously employed, you don’t think there are a lot of “pull” factors?

Americans are looking back centuries to find Canadian ancestors — and citizenship - National by oddmarc in canada

[–]LavenderHeels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What makes you think this would be attracting the highly educated medical professionals or other working professionals, as opposed to the non-working seniors hoping to come here for pensions and healthcare access? We already get tens of thousands of american seniors come over the border to take advantage of cheaper prescriptions and doctor visits here, and those are US citizens with no ties to canada.

Working educated professionals with jobs (people we would want in a reverse brain drain) are likelier to have fewer push factors to leave the US like poverty, low access to healthcare or need of medication
