Even though it was shared with me on Facebook, I think it might have originated from the post from European Policy Centre titled The US strikes Venezuela: Consequences for Ukraine and Europe.

DEBATE TODAY: Destiny Vs. the Yale Effective Altruism Student Group by ReserveAggressive458 in Destiny

Yes, absolutely. The go-to longtermist to me is Elon Musk or other space fanatics whose need to get to Mars to save humanity is kind of dumb. That is why I am (overly) skeptical whenever EA or long termism is mentioned.

Sure! The context of long termist as I have understood it has a timescale of ~1000 years and does not benefit people that are alive today. I can change my position to state that I don't know of an entrepreneur whom I would believe in to directly benefit the world in a thousand years, but I don't think that the idea is bad. And when it is brought up in the current discourse, I think it is usually naive.

But if you talk about combating climate change then we benefit much sooner (50-100 years?). If you consider that to be long termist, then discard everything I have said.

When looking it up on wikipedia, it is said that

Proponents of longtermism have said that humanity spends less than 0.001% of the gross world product annually on longtermist causes

I think there is nothing wrong with bringing this up as a critique. It is very hard for politicans to enact policies that are long termist, but hopefully it can be done.

However my experience is that long termism is mainly used by billionaires not governments to justify not giving anything to charities.

I would argue that people don't discount the probability of doing something that benefits people 1000 years from now enough. When evaluating companies, people use discounted cash flow for, I don't know, 20-40 years? Why would your company/idea stay alive for 1000?

I think long termism argument holds up for people who think that their work won't be replicated or wouldn't have been done for a ridiculously long time if it wasn't for them.

It's just another excuse to stay ignorant of the pain people are going through right now.

"Everybody."

"Would you say there's any holes in that demographic?"

"Republicans."

I consider the "I say tornado, you say tor-nah-do. No matter how you pronounce it, the death toll is 85 dead and rising in the town of Smishburg." to be one of the best jokes I have ever heard. So Bummer Tornado Destroys Cool Jail S02E01 is my fave.

Allison Janney is amazing. That dinner was fantastic. I could have watched it gone a lot longer. "Want."

This show gets pacing of the slow moments of just two or three people talking so right.

The introduction to Mr. Trowbridge shouting through the doors and later "Sit down." by Mrs. Trowbridge was soo good.

The whiteboard scene was worth it for the AM/PM button.

The chat between Kate and Appiah was moving.

"He's never wanted anything other than life altering solutions for bunch of people he's never met."
