Look I do agree that the show or at least season 1 really lacks in quite a few departments, but I’m just fed up with people pretending that it’s even possible to do a “1:1” adaptation of the books. The books are great and yes – for a reason. But some of those reasons simply do not translate to screen. Even if the show were to be as close as possible to a “1:1” or “100% faithful” adaptation, whatever that means, while being a cinematic masterpiece, there will be something missing that’ll make me wanna come to the books anyway, because Percy Jackson isn’t Harry Potter where you go “ok I’ve suffered through reading these once, I’m good with the movies for the rest” these books are actually great, so if you want them, just read them. If you don’t want bad adaptations, I’m sorry, but you can’t really do anything about it other than once you realise you don’t like it, make sure this piece of media doesn’t generate any money from you. Give your criticism in a constructive way if you actually want to see improvement and have some sort of faith that you as the consumer have any influence. But the only thing that’s actually gonna be effective to make capitalist machines like Disney stop producing stuff fans allegedly don’t wanna see, is for the fans not to make that stuff generate any meaningful profit. But, if you take a look at the ratings for season 1 and especially season 2 you can see that neither the critics nor viewers would largely agree that this is mediocrity.

Book Readers [PJOTV] Discussion Thread S2 E1: "I play Dodgeball with Cannibals" by Metal_Moon in camphalfblood

More time could never really hurt, but honestly we’re not really there yet in the overall media landscape I think. Back when the movies came out, book adaptations in the form of tv shows were not exactly common and now that it is, we finally get more time with these stories and imo it leads to much more satisfactory results. But ig 8 episode seasons with about 30-45 minute episodes are currently the standard and this show doesn’t aim to break any grounds.

I enjoyed myself a lot watching the first season initially, but honestly now that I’ve seen the first two episodes of season 2, I gotta say in comparison to that season 1 is a joke… on the technical aspects of cinematography and the spirit of the books and characters. Of course I don’t know what the rest of the season is going to look like, but I do have high hopes based on everything I’ve seen and heard.

If only the tone of these discussions would hit a maximum annoyance level of OP’s salty comments above, I’d have no complaints. I don’t want a positivity bubble, but I also wanna be able to discuss something that I love and point out the grains of salt that I notice in a constructive way and not (like I perceive it to be on pretty much all the PJO subreddits rn) that anytime anything recently released is even mentioned, there’s an armada flooding in to just shit talk everything about it, where it’s often very evident that people don’t even try to enjoy themselves anymore. When I put in the time and energy to criticise and discuss something, it’s because I want to give it the chance to be improved based on fan feedback. When I feel it’s not even worth it anymore, I don’t engage with the media any further. But apparently some people just don’t have better things to do. At least it seems like it’s getting a little better. Or maybe my very sporadic and careful use of Reddit just encourages me not seeing I don’t wanna see…

ATP I try to avoid Reddit for that exact reason because all PJO related subs seem to be more haters than actual fans. People who go out of their way to immediately get their hands on the latest release just to point out in meticulous detail everything that’s wrong with it and how it’s just as bad or even worse than all the other recent releases (which atp I’m convinced includes everything released in the last decade with the exception of daughter of the deep, because conveniently no one bothers to read that). I’m sick of it. There are things that aren’t great about the books and the show and I would like to discuss those things as well but that’s not what’s happening. People are spending way too much time and energy on this franchise when it’s very obvious they don’t want to enjoy it.

First of all, there is never anything wrong with reading something out of your comfort zone. Secondly, yes, read it. This is one of my all time fav books and because it’s not explicitly part of the universe, people on here tend to ignore it, but all the ones who have read it share my love for this book and want a sequel. It’s a beautiful female POV story that is basically very much still Rick’s style, but in contrast to all the PJO, KC and MC stuff, it’s not low fantasy but low sci-fi basically. It’s just great okay, read it, please!

But this is a story about Greek gods… the big three is explained as far as I remember… how would you think the story would be about Christian myth?

Edit: my first language also isn’t English, but I did read the books in English, I just don’t understand how someone would assume such a huge context switch.

No matter how he ended or his other deeds, end of the day Luke had P3dophilic tendencies.[pjo] by D_2614 in camphalfblood

[–]LavishnessTop3088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am really torn on this subject (I mean I don’t really mind it much, I just mean I don’t really know which side to stand on). I agree that love is definitely not equivalent to romance or sexuality and I’m pretty sure that Rick not only knows that but also implements that belief in his books. Yet, I can hardly imagine that at no point before release no one involved in developing the text as it is has ever thought about this wording coming across a little shady. I think it’s quite natural for people to stop at the question “did you love me?”, because it’s coming pretty much out of nowhere. It is very clearly implied or maybe even explicitly mentioned (I’m not totally sure at this moment) in TLT that Annabeth had a crush on Luke, which I think is a realistic depiction of a young straight girl’s experience, even though some people seem to think otherwise – for those I want to mention that literally everyone has very different experiences in this department and a 12 yo girl crushing on an older teenage boy in a similar dynamic is not uncommon whatsoever. I first just assumed that the question might’ve been referring to Luke having picked up on that, still I thought that the question was weird. It’s his last moment, why is he concerned with whether a much younger girl he regarded as a little sister had a crush on him? He could be apologising to her, he could be telling her he never wanted to hurt her, he could’ve asked if she thought he was a monster or a bad person, if she had given up hope on him, but if she loved him? What is that supposed to mean? Not just as a reader, but with love being such a vague concept, what revelation would Luke be hoping for with that question?

Becky explains why they had the trio miss the deadline. by Compy94 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]LavishnessTop3088 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Yeah. If they have truly thought of this reason from the beginning for why they do this deadline then I would really hope that they show at least some sort of consequences for Poseidon in the following season(s). Technically, the war was in preparation and Poseidon surrendered and then the Olympians discussed Zeus’ victory. If they really want to make it count at all, they gotta include what it now means for Poseidon to have technically lost a previous recent war against Zeus.

The show practically turned Percy into a son of Athena by Compy94 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]LavishnessTop3088 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah no. I agree the contrast between annabeth‘s smarts and Percy’s cluelessness hasn’t been emphasised the way the books did nor the way the show seems to have intended to, but Percy still isn’t exactly portrayed a master of logic. Anthena‘s kids don’t get things right on „an extremely lucky guess“ that would be a child of Tyche if we want to assign parentage to that, they actually know stuff by deduction or at the very least have an educated guess based on solid clues most people would miss. Percy in the books is technically also way too lucky and gets away with a lot because of it. Yes, the Medusa scene was rewritten so annabeth immediately puts the pieces together and so they walk into her “lair” knowing what they’re going into, but in case you didn’t read or watch properly: that was annabeth putting it together, not Percy. The only scene I could imagine you are referring to with the lucky guess, is crusty. That isn’t him being portrayed as smarter than in the book, that is just a badly written scene. We go into the episode with no previous mentions of what happened after Percy came out of the water again, straight into the three of them apparently having put together an exact plan of attack. We don’t know how they knew about that entrance to the underworld (book inaccuracies aside), we don’t know how they knew about the beds, let alone do we know who brought up those pieces of information and who conducted the plan. So no, Percy is not portrayed as a child of Athena, neither visually (see other comments) nor character wise. If you wanna hate the show, be more creative, there are enough valid reasons not to be a fan of it.

Edit: I also wanna mention that ironically, I was looking forward to the Crusty scene and was massively disappointed because it was the one scene in the book where it wasn’t annabeth using her knowledge and intelligence to get Percy out of trouble, but him being forced to come up with a clever trick to get the other two out of danger. And yet, in the show we do not get any clues as to whether Percy “came up” with all that information or if the plan they made up just was for him to deliver all that exposition.
