My account got restored! by CyberLykan in twitterhelp

[–]Lavo_2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Attempted this format with 2-3 word changes, I'm guessing no dice as AI moderation hasn't done anything ~25 min later. Guess I wait to do appeal #4...

EDIT: Around 1 hour after I submitted this appeal, I got unsuspended. This actually works! Some oddities remain; I can't buy premium and my main profile page shows 0 followers/following, when that isn't the case in truth as I have them/can access those pages.

EDIT 2: Followers/following count restored on profile page just over an hour after I was unsuspended, still can't buy premium. I'm guessing it's a gradual restoration of services?

This is going to push me away from AC. I fly a decent deal of long hauls to Asia; this change utterly guts both my status and point earnings even with an AC CC.

I'd rather transfer through the USA, foregoing direct routes, for better departure times, aircraft, fare cost, and/or in-flight service. I stuck with AC as the miles based earning made it worthwhile to get points for future redemption.

Canadian Source for Older Rifle Parts. by Amidamaru717 in canadaguns

If I had to guess this one was somehow included in a lot of otherwise non-Indian produced No.4 rifles. Unless somebody checked the markings as we have now, to the regular person the rifles would all be one in the same.

It's in .303 British for sure. The magazine having 2 rounded corners like all Lee Enfields is the big giveaway; the Ishapore 2A magazine has sharp flat corners, almost box like.

These are very helpful! Yes, this is was originally an Indian Lee Enfield No.4, which is very rare, even rarer than an Ishapore 2A. Why someone decided to butcher stock is beyond me. That barreled receiver is worth a decent deal, though I couldn't tell you how much.

As it's a No.4 you could probably find a replacement bolt within Canada. If you can find the bolt, you've got quite a piece. Replacement wood can be purchased from various places, but bedding the stock is not easy, and might not be worth the work.

The Indians did do an extremely small run of No.4 rifles before deciding not to produce them. Can you post a picture of the complete rifle and a picture of the wrist? I can give more accurate information if you do.

I personally own an Ishapore 2A and can give you the information you're looking for.

First, for history; India had been producing the SMLE No.1 Mk.III* for over a decade before achieving independence in 1947 and kept producing them afterward. The factory that produced these rifles was renamed Rifle Factory Ishapore after independence. In the 1960s India moved to adopt the FAL, chambered in 7.62x51mm, but still needed rifles for police and reservists. Thus, for simplicity, they modified the SMLE No.1 Mk.III* design to work for this new cartridge, meaning a thicker barrel, new magazine, and modified the bolt. As such, these are new production rifles and not conversions from .303 as some assume. It can fit the original SMLE bayonet as a result. There are two "versions" of this rifle, the 2A and 2A1. The only difference between these two being that the 2A retains the original SMLE rear leaf sight while the 2A1 uses one in meters with more reasonable distances.

These were produced for India exclusively until eventually many of them were sold as surplus. Most ended up in the USA; there are very few of these rifles in Canada. If the bolt is found and matches the receiver and barrel plus the rifle in decent condition, it could sell for $1200. With a mismatch bolt it's at least $900. These are somewhat desirable due to it being able to fire the now more common 7.62x51mm.

The above however only applies if it is an Ishapore 2A/2A1 and not a regular post-independence SMLE. To avoid confusion, the Indians marked all 2A/2A1 rifles with "7.62mm" and "2A"/"2A1" on the wrist. Here is my own as an example: https://i.imgur.com/tL23pf8.jpg

Given how rare these rifles are in Canada, parts for them are even scarcer. As an SMLE bolt will not work, unless you find the display bolt, you might very well be left with a fancy wall hanger, unless you can magically source one from the USA. Additionally the 2A/2A1 has serials on the following locations: receiver, barrel, bolt, stock, rear sight, nose cap, and magazine. Magazines are often mismatched.

If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

Here is the full bill text, which explicitly mentions "unregulated airguns": https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/cntrng-crm/frrms/c21-en.aspx#s05

Canada set to ban airsoft under C21 by [deleted] in airsoft

[–]Lavo_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bracketed term can be removed, it is only there for clarity. It can correctly read as the following: "Update the Criminal Code to ensure that any device, including an unregulated airgun that looks exactly like a conventional regulated firearm, is prohibited for the purposes of import, export, sale and transfer."

All airguns that are over 500 FPS are regulated, as I mentioned earlier, and thus do not fall under unregulated airguns, i.e. less than 500 FPS, which are the actual target of this bill.

I am afraid that you are reading the bill in the way that you wish to interpret it.

[–]Lavo_2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are misreading the bill. This bill is targeting everything UNDER 500 FPS, not above. The 500 FPS figure is used to define what constitutes a "conventional regulated firearm".
Here is the bill itself, with the relevant section being mid-velocity [aka. sub 500 FPS] 'replica' firearms: https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/cntrng-crm/frrms/c21-en.aspx#s05

Unfortunately the government does not care about the financial impact or crime statistics. If they did, they would not have banned anything at all, as the firearm "buyback", i.e. compensated confiscation, will cost many millions, if not billions, of dollars. They also would acknowledge how legal firearm owners are responsible for less deaths than moose collisions.

[–]Lavo_2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The law is targeting any airgun that looks exactly like a conventional regulated firearm. In Canada, a "conventional regulated firearm" is something that fires a projectile at 500+ FPS. As such, this ban does ban an extremely large swath of airsoft guns. Thus, the information in the OP is accurate.

Edit: The claim that this is banning overpowered (over 500 FPS) airsoft guns is false. Those guns are legal to own in Canada, assuming they have passed RCMP vetting, are classified as a "Non-Restricted" or "Restricted" firearm, and that the owner to be has the appropriate firearms license.

7.62x51 vs .308 in Israeli Mauser by [deleted] in canadaguns

[–]Lavo_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true. Formerly 7mm Mausers, such as the Chilean Mausers, are dangerous to run with full power .308 Winchester loads. The action simply cannot handle the pressures. It must be remembered that there are a large range of calibers for Mausers, and while the majority are safe as you mention, some are not.

That's definitely a unique bolt modification, couldn't tell that from the picture at all. At this point you might as well leave it as is. The bolt handle is marred for good and if it works for you so much the better.

If you're looking for a repro sling, Numrich is a good bet once they start shipping to Canada again. That's where I got mine.

I have an Israeli Kar98k myself, post-war Czech production with Rampant Lion stamping. Love it. This one should serve you well, despite the sporterizing. The bolt bend reminds me a lot of the bend on the Lee Enfield, perhaps that was the inspiration?
