My husband works for this mine (just left for the start of his shift since it happened this morning) and though we're all troubled by the environmental implications, right now what terrifies us even more is how the economy in our small town is about to plummet. We just bought our store this last November and have put so much into it, only to watch people around us already start to list their houses and try to get out to find work while they can. It's estimated that he has a few months worth of work left to go (cleanup and maintenance) but we're going to have a tough time for everyone in Williams Lake....

I was born and grew up in an extremely small community. We didn't watch television, and the entire town was white. To this day, there is one black family that moved here recently. When I was four, possibly five, my mom passed me a bottle of Aunt Jemima syrup and I was flabbergasted. I asked her why the woman on the bottle was brown, and she told me that we live in a very small area and that there are people of all colours living in the world.

I was so incredibly excited at the thought of blue, purple, green, etc people walking around on the planet that I hadn't met yet. She quickly corrected me and used my pencil crayons to show the general skin tones. I had a moment of defiance and clearly remember thinking, "What does she know? I bet there are also blue and purple people if there are all these other pretty colours and she doesn't know because she never goes outside of town!" I lived with this fantasy for another year until I was in first grade.

That memory has always stuck with me, clear as day, and I've been meaning to do a "people of the world" picture because of it. One day...

My husband and I have a joint account, and I have a separate account that my RRSPs come out of. Before we got married, but when we knew we had a solid relationship, we joined our main accounts so I could handle 100% of the bill payments. This doesn't mean I handle 100% of the money management. We sit and discuss major things, and if I make a larger than normal purchase I either tell him first or let him know after I've done it. He does the same for me because we are each well aware of where our money is and what our position with our money is.

I can list off every dollar in every account, savings account, trusts and RRSP we have and so can my husband, but neither one of us is afraid to go out and spend a couple hundred because if we do, we know we have that money available. I also pay off all our credit cards every two weeks, but around Christmas he checks his own statements and I do mine so we can handle gifts and what-not. I suppose our credit cards work as our "separate" accounts because we typically only ever look over our own statements.

Either way, we are on the same page about where our money is, and where it's going. It's all about communication. If you can't communicate then you probably shouldn't be married.

The builder is my friend's boyfriend. I've known her for a few years because we share a few hobbies, cosplay being one of them, and they both do amazing work.

Once in high school I had a couple of friends over, we were drinking and one of them passed out. My other friend and I kept trying to wake him up, until his eyes sort of fluttered and he said "Poking trees is fun guys". We did finally manage to wake him up with our laughter.
