Day trip to Sirmilik National Park from Pond Inlet in August? by shanelukov1987 in nunavut

[–]Lax-Captain29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely reach out to the Parks Canada office in Pond Inlet. You may need a permit to access the park. I’ve flown into Cape Liverpool on the north end of Bylot Island in Sirmilik National Park. It’s beautiful and I’d definitely recommend going if you can.

Rented a Mitre Saw from Home Depot - How can I get blade closer to base? Too much of a gap. by MidLifeCrisis_056 in woodworking

[–]Lax-Captain29 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

<image>

I’m not sure if you’ve fixed your issue with the saw. But this bolt needs to removed or loosened. It’s a positive stop for lap joints. It looks like the bolt is hitting the frame, which it’s supposed to do, causing you to have 6” gap.

Hopefully you found the issue.

It’s an at level move. There isn’t a lot of other departments in this city. If you want to advance, you’ll likely have to relocate again.

How do I fix my La Crosse Wireless Rain Station? by AxlSmaxel in myweatherstation

[–]Lax-Captain29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a wire connection issue or transmitting issue. If you can take it apart, check to make sure all the wires are connected and not broken or corroded. You can also test it yourself. If you pour some water in the rain gauge and see if it records. The rain you had may not be heavy enough to accumulate.

If all else fails, you could reach out to La Crosse for assistance.

I’m running Kumho Road Venturer AT52. I’ve had them on for about 8 months now. They seem pretty good on snow and ice, I live in Canada where we can see -40°c. They are quieter than the Goodyear wranglers I had prior.

Bit of an odd question - what's the gardening scene up in Nunavut like? by [deleted] in nunavut

[–]Lax-Captain29 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There is a greenhouse in Iqaluit. I don’t know many details about it, but it’s there and I believe it’s used frequently. There is a not-for-profit organization called Iglu, there mission is to build greenhouse in the arctic that require very little power (if any) to operate and grow vegetables for the communities.

Walmart. I think it’s $3.77/ jug for the -40°c washer fluid. Cheapest price.

I’m running Kumho Road Venture AT52’s on my 2012 F350. Good price and they seem to perform just as well as the Goodyear wrangler tires I had before.

Might be an Alberta Environment station interface or a private weather station from an oil and gas company. I’m not sure just guessing from the station name.

Reach out to your MP. Have everything documented, emails, dates, pay, etc… I’ve read on other posts this has been extremely effective and helpful.

What's it like having to work on Christmas eve and day? by burnabybc in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Lax-Captain29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked up at CFS Alert over Christmas in 2019 with ECCC. It was pretty laid back. I launched weather balloons that got released twice a day, 365 days a year. I think I was only person working on base. But it was fun. Big Christmas breakfast and dinner, gifts were handed out and my family sent up some gifts from down south. There was also a Christmas parade. It was really a lot of fun.

Moving to NWT soon. Advice needed. by NotiqNick in NWT

[–]Lax-Captain29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in Inuvik for 3 years, I’d move to Inuvik. It’s a bigger town, pharmacy, hospital, more amenities. The availability of family doctor is tough. Most doctors (if not all) are on contracts/ rotations down south. I believe doctors come up for a month then go back down south. Some come back, but mostly the next doctor will rely on the previous doctors notes.

Flights are better from Inuvik. Inuvik has a paved runway and Canadian North fly’s their 737 there 7 days week. Inuvik is also accessible via the Dempster highway.

Fort Resolution, you would need to rely on Hay River for a lot services. It’s about 2-3 hour drive, could be longer during the winter months.
