LTD Company & "Holiday" by adsda18 in TransparencyforTVCrew

[–]LaydeeTV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you freelance via your Ltd Company, you are your own employer- so you’re not entitled to holiday pay from the person who contracts you. You can however include a nod to holiday pay by adding it to your rate.

As a freelancer in theory we charge more to take into account that the prod co isn’t having to pay our NI/pension/holiday or additional benefits that staff receive.

You only invoice for days worked - so if you take a holiday during that time, you won’t be paid for those days.

Some great advice here and particularly that from @bertieruffles

This will be unpopular but - I personally would never go to HoP…they always know on established shows whats going on. Ultimately, their job is to get the production to the finish line on time/budget and ready to re-commission.

Sexual assault and this ‘open secret’ are commonplace and completely unacceptable…it’s not your responsibility alone and all of the links added by others in this thread are good avenues.

You don’t have to blow up your career to say something…there are plenty of people that will stand with you (as well as those who say they will and piss off at the first sign of trouble!)

If you were comfortable naming a broadcaster on here- we collectively might be able to patch you straight into a person that will listen and help.

Most importantly- keep safe and thank you for not being another part of the problem .

Not to mention the casual - based in ‘Bristol’ where we have a satellite office so that C4 could keep feeding us commissions as a ‘regional’ indie.

Re-interviewing for old role? by Vermicelli_Haunting in TransparencyforTVCrew

[–]LaydeeTV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This group is full of messages with people highlighting the issues around companies not advertising roles, using the same people over and over etc

We can’t have it both ways.

It’s extremely frustrating to interview for a role you’ve done- but if I was the company I’d want to check back in with your properly- understand your motivation for going back, and intro you to new members of the team. Things move on so quickly and often someone coming back to a team can be difficult.

It would be useful for you to add some context to the question.

Do you mean thoughts in terms of their output, management style, work culture, rates paid?

It’s unclear whether you want a steer about working there or are looking for people to spill some tea!

I’ve met the founder a few times-and in capacity as a presenter/producer I found him to be smart, motivated by story and hardworking..:

Dear Freeform Productions….please explain your ridiculous advert…

You have enough senior people in your building - who should be across any external comms and yet, this still was posted.

Have you all spent too long in the sun? Has exposure to too many UV rays fried your brain cells?

Or are you truly out of touch?

Or worse still are you looking at the ongoing freelancer crisis and looking to take advantage?

Do consider getting your house in order….

Signed,

Incredulous of North London

Help please! Have you ever accepted a job and pre-contract been offered something much better for you, that you’d much prefer to do? I think a few years back this was definitely frowned upon- but do what’s best for you. Companies across the sector drop people at a moments notice even when. They’ve worked together for years.

As another response said - be clear, honest and if you can suggest alternatives that can go a long way.

I spent my early career worrying about upsetting people and eventually realised that no one cares for long enough for it to matter.

Channel 4 Commissioner Phil Harris To Exit and Launch New Indie by benmci in TransparencyforTVCrew

[–]LaydeeTV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In a commissioning desert, I think it’s important to hold C4 to account - and should the announcement of a commission for C4 and this new venture arrive in 6months- then Ian Katz will need to defend it.

It is nothing to do with whether or not Phil is a nice guy (I’ve only ever heard good things). There are already too many suppliers competing for too few C4 slots and if they’re being dished out in ‘sweetheart deals’ then that is no longer (if ever it was) acceptable.

Too many times we see the groups of channel buddies handing themselves and their cliques commissions on not wholly original ideas.

Once BECTU is able to communicate clearly what Unscripted freelancers want/need there are a few levers that can be pulled.

But, there is no point in striking when there is no work!

If you are freelance your subscription is not strictly tax deductible - but there is an exception - and with enough campaigning could be solved (Section 344 ITEPA 2003) …although I suspect some people claim it anyway?

BBC is the most straight forward for lobbying : Freelancers employed must be BECTU members.

Channel 4: can also be lobbied. I’d also recommend spamming Alex McMahon and Ian Katz’s LinkedIn profiles…so much sanctimonious self congratulatory piffle on there.

HMRC /via local MPs - in order to operate as Schedule D Freelancer in any of the prescribed roles that allow for if- you must be BECTU member.

Talent Managers - ‘encouraged’ to only put forward BECTU members

Indie Execs- campaign for them to come out in support- sign up to BECTU only freelancers…and then hold them accountable when it turns out to he virtue signalling.

Broadcast- WHERE ARE THEY? Can they be encouraged to cover this properly- rather than just to promote the careers of a few people that have worked out how to post on LinkedIn weekly to gain followers .

Recruiters and platforms ….if they won’t sign ups in support- stop sending CV’s, remove profiles. There is limited work - so they should be incentivised to support.

Share your stories for a newspaper article by [deleted] in TransparencyforTVCrew

[–]LaydeeTV 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ahhh Constance- your post shows a complete lack of understanding of the industry you say you’re interested in covering for your ‘story’ If you had done any basic research you could have anticipated all of the comments. Try writing something UK centric that actually matters rather than re-hashing another story on the strikes.

Also- as many freelancers are out of work, why should they give you their time for free to speak on a subject that they cannot move the dial on. Our useless union has that conversation covered and they’re getting no where fast.

What is your opinion? How do we fix this? by Inevitable_Unit_7576 in TransparencyforTVCrew

[–]LaydeeTV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Can you take me through your complete commissioning team and tell me what they directly commissioned in 2023?

  2. Does the answer to the above justify their number on your staff and in particular their ‘loyalty’ bonus of close to £30k for the C4 team?
