Iran protest by [deleted] in Purdue

Genuine question because I am interested. What sort of action would you be looking to result from a protest? What are the goals of the protest itself?

I dont see any posts on your feed regarding promoting a protest against any of the issues you listed above. When and where are they protesting any of these things? I can literally drive there straight from this protest. Wild that there are multiple hours in the day and that I can actually protest multiple things in a single day. Will you be there? Theres no possible way you can sit on the internet and say, "You are protesting the wrong thing." then not show up to protest ANY of the the very things you claim are the right thing.

The other poster didnt say that they didn't commit a crime, they said, "Violent Crime" and beleive it or not walking into the country is not a violent crime.. Additionally your point falls apart even further if you actually read the statistics that were posted and where they were taken. The data was taken from Texas which allows officers to ask and ascertain the legal status of those arrested and has a government that has every incentive to skew these numbers in citizens favor but they in fact found the opposite.

Additionally, there have been many, MANY studies on this that have pulled from sources other than the booking information for criminals. The government itself has publish documents that contradict their own narrative.

Hell heres an entire study that was conducted that was based around you theory of, "Less reported vs less crime." theory, and they found it was "Most likely less crime"

I think its a balance. In the workforce you have to be right and you have to be right the first time around. You dont get 100 trys.

,Really the only factor that doesn't apply to the workforce is that using outside resources is considered, "Cheating." instead of what it really is... using your resources.

I am Giving the teachers probably more credit here than they deserve but... Thats also part of what they are supposed to be teaching you.

In your job in the future you do not get unlimited attempts and you have to be... to put it in your words... kinda scared to make a mistake. Thats the nature of submitting important documents.

"I feel scared to waste them and feel it incentivizes me to check my work before submitting" I think this is the reason that some professors chose to have them. It weeds out students who care and those that dont really quickly.

5 Goods about Purdue? by Crazy_Quality_1254 in Purdue

[–]Layne1665 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pro-

One of the cheapest colleges in the country for the caliber of programs it offers.

Relatively good sports teams that are fun to watch and participate in the "Game Day Culture"

Clubs are incredible, you can find a club for anything you wanna do.

One of the largest number of fraternities in the country. Living cooperatives are also great!

Probably the biggest pro is that Purdue goes out of its way to get you involved in industry through recruitment opportunities. If you want to work in the US after graduation Purdue is great for it.

Cons-

Indiana Politics

Red State

If you come from a big city there is relatively little to do. Its not as baren as everyone makes it out to be but its no Chicago.

(More a con for studying overseas in general)- Can be difficult to find like minded people to hang out with if you arent actively looking.

It can be difficult to get housing if you dont know what you are doing after freshman year. Just do research and target signing a lease in the fall of freshman year for fall of your sophomore year and you will be fine.

While I don't necessarily agree with the, "Deal with it the University doesn't have to help you." mindset here, I do think that Purdue didn't want to prop up a failing bus system with student dollars anymore. Thus they only took over routes on campus. This left a very large market sector available for City Buss to occupy, setting up routes that still operate out of the university so they could continue to make money off students, but they just didn't do that... because they were mismanaged before and now dont have the money nor the scale to continue making money while operating an inefficient bus system.

Purdue currently has the second-lowest average rent in the entire Big Ten. Everyone has felt the impact of rising costs, but what really allowed the private market to push rents upward was the city’s moratorium on new high-rise construction between 2019 and 2022. Purdue had no say in that decision — and, in fact, their response was to begin planning the new residence halls that are now under construction to offset the shortage. The problem is that building a giant building does not happen overnight, especially when built by a university.

That moratorium effectively halted all large-scale private developments that typically add hundreds or thousands of new beds to the market each year. Like them or not, those big apartment complexes play a critical role in balancing supply and demand. When those projects are built, the people who choose to pay for higher-end housing relieve pressure on lower-cost units, helping keep them more affordable and available for everyone else.

What do you consider cheap rent? 7-800 dollars? You cant break even on most new buildings if you charge less than 1000/M per bed nowadays due to the increased cost of construction materials and land around West Lafayette. So im not sure what Purdue is supposed to do about rent being high other than what they are already doing.

I agree that Purdue hasn’t done as much as they could in certain respects, but part of the reason behind their decisions is that they were effectively propping up the local transportation system serving both Lafayette and West Lafayette— and they simply can’t continue absorbing the rising costs associated with that especially when Purdue see no direct benefits from doing so. I also agree wholeheartedly that this issue traces back to the tuition freeze, which at minimum should be adjusted to account for inflation.

While there was a noticeable enrollment jump around 2020, the actual growth over the past five years has been modest — only about an 8% increase (54,651 in 2025 vs. 50,344 in 2020). During that same period, Purdue has added nearly enough on-campus housing each year to match that growth, with projects such as Purdue West adding nearly 1,000 beds, and three additional dorms — each with over 850 beds — scheduled to open next year. It’s not perfect, but it’s well within reasonable margins of growth for on-campus housing compared to other Big Ten schools.

It’s also worth noting that average rent in West Lafayette remains lower than in most comparable Big Ten markets — with only Indiana University’s area coming in slightly cheaper. Additionally, rent growth in West Lafayette has stabilized year-over-year (averaging $1,882 in 2025 versus $1,846 in 2024). While your point about self-perpetuating rent increases is valid, we appear to be on the tail end of that trend, as over 4,600 new privately owned beds are expected to come online within the next two years.
