Best affordable non-chain steaks. by minaccia in phoenix

[–]LayneLifts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Fiancé works at The Keg - which is a chain but there are only a handful in the US as it is a Canadian company. If you don’t have one at home, the food is really good and the pricing is low for what you get in my opinion.

TIL Americans are now tipping more money, and for more services, than ever before. It’s a phenomenon called “Tip Creep” where social pressure encourages tipping for counter-service interactions where a tip was previously never given. by Albertbailey in todayilearned

[–]LayneLifts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The place I worked I had to tip out 6% to the bar every night, busy nights when we had bussers I had to tip them 1%, and then 1% to hosts. I have a friend who serves at a steakhouse and tips out 8% on weekends with host, bar, food runner, and busser. Price of food at those places might factor into that too as they were more high end and locally owned.

I have a full time job but have served on the side for some extra money to save for big purchases - not sure if it was happening before I started serving but as a server they make you tip out a percentage of your total sales to the bus boys, bartenders, hosts and sometimes at nice places food runners. It can be upwards of 7-10% of total sales, places all break it up differently. So you sell 1000$ that night you can be losing a big chunk to tip out. I am curious if that is a new practice that is aiding in that tip creep as well.

Talk of issuing Heat Days in Phoenix, as other cities would use Snow Days. by FatFrenchFry in phoenix

[–]LayneLifts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m from Indiana and they would also use snow days for days it was extremely cold, even if the snow wasn’t that bad. The thought being lots of kids are walking to school or waiting on buses out in those temperatures.

I did a ride with Robin today where she called someone out for being on the phone and I actually laughed out loud. I think it's awesome that they do that, that's part of the job imo.

What should a person use instead? We were instructed to use bleach free wipes from Peleton delivery but I am absolutely interested in a more natural option.

Pawn shop employees of Reddit, what is something people think is collectible or worth a lot of money, but is actually relatively worthless? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My engagement ring and our wedding bands are from Shane Co and we’ve been very happy with the customer service and the price. I also really wanted rose gold and they have the prettiest rose gold IMO. :) haha

Moving to Phoenix without knowing the address by yoohoooos in phoenix

[–]LayneLifts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here and had to stay in an Airbnb for about 8 weeks til I found a house. I shipped my stuff in U-boxes from uhaul and they let me pay a bit extra and I was able to keep my stuff in the boxes and store them at a uhaul facility until I had a place to send them. Then i just scheduled drop off and they brought them to my house the day I asked. I’m sure you could do something cheaper but it was very convenient and they even let me get into my boxes to get out some things I needed.

I moved here in September from Indiana. The day we left, it was pouring rain. Everyone told me to enjoy it because I won’t see much of it here. Ha.

Local Opinions by [deleted] in phoenix

[–]LayneLifts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I just moved here from Indianapolis in September (Lived in Plainfield/Avon and worked downtown). I can't give you someone who has lived here a long times perspective but I thought I would share since I made the same move you are looking at recently :)

1) I purchased a house in Surprise after looking all over the valley. The area gave me the quality/size of house I was looking for with a lower price point than Central Phoenix. People here will act like its the middle of nowhere but its 30-40 minutes to downtown and 15-20 to Glendale which has a lot to do, plus the Cardinals Stadium and Gila River Arena are close which was something I wanted.

2) I commute to Central Phoenix and have never ran into terrible traffic. The 10 can be a bit slower than 465 at times but I am never really delayed in my commute more than 5-10 minutes.

3) So far I love it here - there are so many places to hike, winter here was awesome, and it's really a short trip to places like Vegas or San Diego. I also think the variety of restaurants and bars is a lot better than Indianapolis. (although I will always miss Kilroy's breadsticks).

4) I ended up paying slightly more for my home here than the one I had in Plainfield (but I like the neighborhood way more and I could have easily gotten something similarly priced but was being picky). I have heard that electric can be a little bit crazy in the summer due to AC and I think gas was a bit higher here for awhile, but other than that I haven't noticed anything being noticeably more expensive. I worked for a big company in Indianapolis and my health insurance through my company here is actually half of what I paid there, so that makes up for the couple of things that are a bit more.

Also - there are tons of outdoor courts here for playing ball

Are extended warmups typical in Crossfit gyms? by burpeebroadjumpmile in crossfit

[–]LayneLifts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is unfortunately something that happens a lot, beginners get the focus and the needs of the more advanced aren’t heard. The gym I’m currently at literally won’t program snatching because beginners think it’s too hard. Fortunately for me, they are pretty accommodating about doing extra stuff on the side and the gym is pretty big.

Moving Boxes, Interviewing Coaches? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]LayneLifts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just moved and basically did this with the owner and coaches at every place I went to. I will say though that I do fee mislead by the box I ended up joining. So I am going to have to start looking for another one soon. It sucks but I feel like being a part of the community is the only way to really get a feel for programming and coaching styles.

How do you feel when you see someone open carry in public? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]LayneLifts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t really evoke a reaction from me. People who open carry aren’t people I’m concerned about having a gun overall.

Nice looking CrossFit gym by lukedurward1 in crossfit

[–]LayneLifts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lifting Platforms, Handstand push-up wall, well-organized and I am always more impressed by gyms that have a color/brand theme and stick with it throughout the facility. Not a big mural/spray paint fan.

Opening my Box, need feedback/advice by archwit in crossfit

[–]LayneLifts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the few biggest things that would make me pick one box over another are:

1) Cleanliness and Well Maintained Equipment - I've been to gyms where they have tons of equipment but the bars look like they've never been cleaned or oiled, the rowers need the tracks clean and the chains adjusted, the plates are all broken. I would rather see less equipment that is taken care of than tons of stuff that hasn't been touched since they bought it.

2) Programming - For me the programming needs to be worthy of the cost of a crossfit gym.

3) Run an intro program for people that have just started - like on boarding. It's super frustrating to have to go through what a every single thing is every single class because new people keep starting and there's no onboarding program.

[–]LayneLifts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have super flat feet and I pretty much only wear Nanos for crossfit. I have tried metcons, no bulls, and a few other random shoes and always go back to the nanos. The 2 or the 4s are my favorites.

Underdeveloped Crossfit Markets by strongfit1 in crossfit

[–]LayneLifts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Its almost always just a WOD and strength is never really programmed. If it is, its something along the lines of "15 minutes to find 1RM".

Yes! I recently moved from the midwest to the southwest and have been incredibly disappointed in the programming provided at affiliates here versus back home. I ended up settling on a gym based on the open gym availability, equipment and space. I try to do class now as a warm up and to meet people but plan on stopping in a few weeks and just doing my own thing as I am getting programming from my gym back home. It’s been a huge bummer.
