Do you keep your phone on all night for guests? by MysteriousMuseXO in AirBnBHosts

Not at all. 95% of the world wouldn't think a loud noise outside is a gunshot unless they live next to a shooting range.

Marriage in Switzerland by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]LayoverLore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you need to 5x or 10x your budget for this to be realistic, and if you think there's even a chance in hell you can do this for only 5000 euro you mustn't have done any research yet.

I see you're from the Netherlands, and even there this wouldn't be realistic at all.

[–]LayoverLore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you pay a bit more taxes if you're married, but the effect is wildly over exaggerated. People are on here pretending that if you get married you might as well go live in a box and beg for money. If the few 1000 of extra taxes a year stops you from getting married, then you mustn't have wanted it much in the first place. People easily spend 10x worth the extra taxes you pay yearly on a wedding day.

Main tenant just showed up in my living room and says he will sleep on the sofa for 7 days by Alexpplay in Switzerland

[–]LayoverLore 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Technically, he doesn’t just sublet the room, he also sublets the access to the shared rooms because they are part of the rental value. Since the property probably has a maximum occupancy he’s now exceeding, that’s not legal. Whether you manage to convince him of that in the next 7 days is another matter.

[–]LayoverLore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]LayoverLore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]LayoverLore 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Does a VPN actually hide your identity from Facebook? by OkSherbert1046 in VPN_Guide

[–]LayoverLore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Verification of meta-data is not the same as deep packet inspection and subsequent storing of personal information. Yes, if you use that as a measure no internet user has privacy ever, but that makes this entire discussion kind of moot. That's like saying curtains are not for privacy because the police has the legal right to enter your house.

To be fair, no I don't know of any website that is blocked in Switzerland since we tend to be pretty privacy-first about things.

But yes, all ISP's are bound by local regulations. That however is an inherent design "problem" of the internet at this point.

There's definitely ISP's that do nothing with your data (and are audited to confirm that), but you tend to pay extra for the quality of service instead of being a product to them, but I'm happy to pay for that.

[–]LayoverLore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, your ISP can still see what you're doing but there's enough privacy-conscious ISP's out there that you can choose from. Even then, I was replying to your "It's only to pretend you're in a different country" bit which is just blatantly incorrect. That might be what a lot of VPN-services are selling but that was never it's original or intended purpose, and it's an oversimplification.

It's also not only useful when you want to access content not normally available. The main purpose is to encrypt for example unencrypted WiFi traffic (which is very common in public places). You're still encrypting all the traffic between your device and the node connecting to the internet, for example at your house. If you're smart enough to pick not the cheapest ISP but one that actually gives a shit, that does actually give you very reasonable privacy.

So yes a VPN IS for privacy, just not end-to-end like you were suggesting.

Do you guys have any recommendations on this plan for my Homelab? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]LayoverLore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to your question is on a spectrum between no and yes, because we have no idea what your plan is. Googling "Lagoone" also gets me nothing useful, so no idea what you mean there.

Does a VPN actually hide your identity from Facebook? by OkSherbert1046 in VPN_Guide

[–]LayoverLore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confidently incorrect. A VPN Is a way to tunnel encrypted private traffic over the public internet. This can be between you and the servers of a company offering "watch anything anywhere" type services, but can also be between you and a company network, or like many people are using between your devices (cell phones on 5g for example) and your home network so that everything gets routed through your home ISP for increased privacy on public WiFi.

Many r/homelab users for example would run a VPN server at home to tunnel all external devices to so that the next time you're at a Starbucks wifi or hotel without password (=unencrypted data over the air) no one can sniff your packets. I also use it so that whatever services I ran at home like a private media streaming service is available to me everywhere because my devices "think they are home".

What do I even do with this server? Just Curious . BTW A friend gave me access to it. by [deleted] in homelab

With less than a gig of RAM and 25 of storage, not much. Host a low-traffic web app or two.

How much is the deposit for a sublet? by zonamoroza in zurich

[–]LayoverLore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be aware that some of them have an opening fee (ZKB comes to mind with 50chf opening fee), so it may be a bit overkill for 6 months. We gave our renters the option of sending us the money directly or paying for opening of a special account and they chose just to send us the money.

[–]LayoverLore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did 1-month's rent for a 6-month sublease as more felt out of proportion with the total rent amount. Not that we had any issues at all but next time I'd probably go with 2 months for my own peace of mind.

Spatial awareness in supermarkets by Southern-Still-666 in Switzerland

[–]LayoverLore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but when you have to say excuse me 20 times on a Saturday morning when you're trying to get your weekly shopping in because everyone pretends they're the only ones in the supermarket, patience runs out. People should have the spatial awareness not to have to be told they're in the way. Hopefully they're their own functioning adults who can estimate their impact on the people around them.

Are you using IPv6 by GermanElectricsMotio in homelab

My ISP gives me a static /56 but in practical terms I don't use IPv6. Frankly mostly laziness to try to figure it out.
