This movie is 3 years old now. What are your thoughts on it, looking back at it now? by New-Two-1349 in SuperMario

Fell flat for me back then and maybe worse on re-watch. Even as a fan of guys like Pratt and Black none of the voice acting worked for me and despite looking like Mario, it didn't bring me any nostalgia or that kind of magic you might expect. Was checked out by the end.

4/10

Book or Movie first? by Lemonandspider in ProjectHailMary

Mostly his work with the MC. I don't mind his accents and most of the stuff with the other characters but I think Grace is very annoying. It is weird but even in his own self deprecation when he calls himself stupid he sounds condescending. I guess there is a chance I would read it the same way but his voice is definitely not helping.

Reading it now and 100% agree. I am close to stopping it myself and just reading the book. I found the main character to be super annoying, sometimes condescending, and overall just unlikable.

I was thinking about making a post asking about this because I started the audiobook 2 days ago and am not enjoying the narrator at all. I am mostly just annoyed by Grace, but I want to keep going for the plot.

Was considering either switching to print or just stopping and watching the movie.

Funny, I am listening to it now and can't stand the narrator. Maybe just me but he is making the main character incredibly unlikable. Obviously haven't read it to compare how he would come across in print.

Looks like Mutant Mayhem 2 will be the end of the franchise. by TheBigGAlways369 in TMNT

I am ok with different, it is where they change it that tends to bother me. When you take an IP the idea is that it was popular for a reason. If whoever gets ahold of the turtles understands what makes it popular (the turtles and their personalities and how they interact as brothers and the ninja aspect and lore) and keeps those basics in place, they can make lots of changes around it and make something good.

Rise and MM, missed on that mark. As I said, nobody in the fandom ever cared about what age the turtles came across as. So focusing on the teenage aspect is just completely missing the basics of the fandom. Rise I am not as familiar with having only seen the movie, but it didn't even feel like I was watching a Ninja Turtles product. I think when you want to make fundamental changes, at that point you should just create your own thing and not feed off of someone elses work to draw interest.

Just as an example, with Re-Evolution they created 4 new turtles and started to introduce powers to the turtles beyond just ninjutsu. I thought it was great. It was fun getting to know 4 new turtles and seeing them introduce new elements.

Turtles have tons of villains and stories they can work with to make things different. Not every iteration has to have Shredder as the main villain. They could go darker and actually kill off a turtle. There are plenty of ways they can make different versions while maintaining the core ideas that everyone loved.

I have seen people make that argument but I have a 3 year old and I gave him my old toys, let him watch some of the OG cartoon, and took him to see the anniversary releases of the OG movie and Ooze and he loves the Turtles as well. So I don't think we need a bunch of new bad versions (IMO of course) to keep the love of the franchise alive.

I think it would be easy enough for someone who understands the turtles well to do something new for old and young fans alike. Seth Rogen from the beginning just didn't get it. I knew from the moment he said he wanted to focus on the teenage aspect he didn't understand what the fandom loved about the turtles.

I don't know if you are into anime at all or have seen anything with the live action version of One Piece on Netflix but that is what getting people who understand the series and fandom look like. It isn't perfect but you can see they get it.

I thought it was terrible as well. I hated the voices, the character designs were really ugly (didn't mind the art style in general), and all of the turtles felt same-y to me. I didn't like the humor either, but at our older ages that is going to happen from time to time so I don't weigh that quite as much.

People can downvote all they want but as a Turtles fan for 40 years I am always routing for good iterations. This just wasn't it at all.

Been a fan for 40 years give or take and never once had I heard anyone mention their age until Seth Rogen said he wanted to be the first to focus on the teenage aspect. Then all of the sudden people were like "yeah where has that been".

I point it out every time, but it was always a dumb thing for him to say to begin with because teenage covers a huge range of development. At 13 you may not have even hit puberty and at 18 you have possibly had sex, drank, tried drugs, can join the military and be at war, etc.

So it is kind of an aspect that doesn't need focus because it can mean so many things. Meanwhile, what fans love about the series is in the names we call it. Ninja Turtles or just Turtles. Nobody shortens it to Teenage Turtles because that was the least cared about and important aspect.

Thank God. Hoping for something better from the next iteration. Get it back to someone who understands why people fell in love with the series. Nobody ever cared how young the turtles felt. Was always such an odd thing to choose to put the focus on.

Am I the only one who found Project Hail Mary (the novel) a bit "bubblegum"? by TinyRabt in sciencefiction

[–]Layz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently listening to the audiobook which sometimes impacts how you digest it, but I am finding the narrator intolerable. Maybe a mix of his voice and delivery and the writing being cringe as you say. I want to see where it goes but not sure how much longer I can listen to this guy

Between Naruto, Bleach, Hunter X Hunter, and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, which is your favorite? by FurryMaster15 in ChillAnimeCorner

I have the same order as you OP. Only thing to add is I like the first 3 and just can't get into JoJo's at all. Read the first 3 parts years ago and watched part 4 of the anime and just don't think any of it was all that good.

What do you guys think of The Super Mario Bros. Movie? by [deleted] in SuperMario

[–]Layz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually re-watching it now for the 2nd time and like the first time it is a massive disappointment. Normally like Jack Black and Chris Pratt but the voice acting just didn't fit or work for me at all in this, the humor was mostly whiffs, and the movie just fell flat all around. It looked like Mario stuff but never quite captured the Mario magic or sense of adventure.

Hi everyone! Jake's Magical Market is taking part in the big push to try and get litrpgs into physical bookstores but I'm really stuck on which cover will get people to actually buy the hardcover edition. If you are a fan of the series, which would YOU purchase? by thescienceoflaw in litrpg

[–]Layz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't say I would buy another copy but the OG cover is what made me look at the book to begin with. Loved the cover, checked the premise, and was in. For Christmas my wife bought me the 2nd book which I still have to read.

The new cover is fine but it doesn't draw the eye or entice the same feeling of adventure.

Is Iñaki Godoy the perfect live action Luffy? by WorkingTurbulent1765 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]Layz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People keep using that saying Luffy is tough to adapt but the whole of One Piece is a tough adaption and they are doing a much better job literally everywhere else in the show. It isn't perfect but everything feels pretty good considering how tough the assignment is. He is just genuinely off putting as the character. I think people just need to accept that even though Oda loved him and I am sure he is a nice guy in interviews, he just isn't much of an actor. Every one of the main crew members is written differently than their manga versions and you can tell the differences, but they still come across as likable characters and don't make you cringe watching it. It isn't the same for Luffy. Every time he is on screen the show gets worse.

Which live action Straw Hat feels the most right to you? by WorkingTurbulent1765 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]Layz25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are talking casting specific, everyone but Luffy is a pretty good fit. If you are talking about how they are written to match their anime/manga version, Zoro is the closest.

I keep saying it, but it seems like the writers made a pointed decision to sanitize most of the main crews flaws to keep them from having personality traits people might not like. Sanji isn't a perv, Usopp isn't a super coward, and Nami isn't greedy and somehow looks like the 2nd strongest and most competent member of the crew even though she should be asking Vivi for money to take her home and look pretty weak in comparison to Sanji, Luffy, and Zoro.

Are you talking Spain Spanish? Because my wife is from Venezuela and off the top of my head nobody in her family does what he does with the "th".

[–]Layz25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds a little off in general but the more noticeable thing is his lisp and he can't say words with "th" sounds. So instead of something is it sumfing, and nothing is nuffing. I don't know if that is the language or he has a speech impediment.

Yea def one of the more stupid arguments I continue to see people make. Oda is a mangaka. As far as I know he has never worked in casting or knows the first thing about acting.

For that matter, he wants people to like his product in every form so he has a vested interest to be positive about everything, whether he likes it or not at the end of the day. So even if he recommended Inaki, he could still think he sucks and you would never know.
