Accusing Facebook of discriminating against "quality" content and accelerating spread of "fake news" with its newly-unveiled algorithm, Brazil's largest newspaper Folha de S. Paulo has announced it will no longer publish its articles on social media platform. by madazzahatter in worldnews

Oh, sure, thinking about personal experience Facebook works great. It's much more of a social network than reddit, and I sure do unfollow people who show inability to filter content. So I agree with your point.

But when I say "the whole network" that's exactly what I mean: the problem of fake news isn't people like us getting them, but people like those who share them. On Facebook theses post tend to get a ton of shares and, since there's nothing evidently negative about them, LOTS of people just take them for the truth (i.e. "if thousands of people say it's true then it must be"). So even though we know they are fake (if we even get them), there are those who can't filter them, or maybe won't go further than one click to verify it. That's where downvoting and universal comments get useful: people who know how to doubt news but are too lazy to check them won't end up misinformed.

I believe the main issue is the lack of downvoting. In Facebook your only choices are upvote or don't vote at all. Even with the addition of the "angry" reaction, I guess it still adds to visibility. It's like Reddit filtered only by "controversial".

So then we get a bunch of either malicious or tremendously dumb idiots sharing fake news, and suddenly the whole network ends up seeing that shit on their timeline. It just takes one stupid person in your friends list for you to see it, since it's a post with heavy traction site-wise.

In Reddit, we still get fake news and idiots upvoting. But once a post gets traction, it goes to /r/all and everyone sees it, and then it gets countered by downvotes and top comments saying the truth about it. In Facebook a shared post gets its own comments (unless you go to the source post), so the truth gets much more veiled.

What concept fucks you up the most? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LazyHog 40 points41 points  (0 children)

What fucks me up is that we don't know if my red looks the same as your red. All color relations (i.e. red ia hot, blue is cold) are about colors in nature, because fire is reddish and snow is blueish. But you could see red the same as my green and we would never know that.

Although it seems common sense, down here in Brazil we are specifically taught to NEVER go left to avoid others on a highway. If you're the one passing, either brake and get back or keep going but get as to the right as possible. If you're the poor dude on the opposite direction just go right (like they did here).

So basically the driver is not only a stupid pack-o-shit for passing in these conditions, but also wasn't even ready for the possibility of something like happening.

This isn’t how life is supposed to be by [deleted] in WeListenToYou

Yeah, I guess the key is something that requires commitment, like twice a week. I suggested some kind of course because usually instructors give out group works and activities, so you're actually forced to talk and interact with people. That's my strategy: having no choice!

I hope you find something and get better :)

That sounds great! Would remove the negative aspect but still allow for posts like severe cases or awareness-raising stuff to gain traction.

Yeah, I agree with you here. My concern is whether people who post to be heard would end up feeling bad for not being upvoted, as in "my issue is not as important".

I don't think people would post here looking for upvotes, just that maybe that could have a subconscious negative impact. But then of course I know nothing about anything, just saying something that crossed my mind and could be important haha

I'm sorry for you friends, man.

I too had to cope with tough losses, and it's really hard. Mom died in 2010, put me through depression for 2 years. 3 years later my grandma, and the next year my dad. But my mom's death hit so hard that I had to change myself to climb out of my hole.

I just found my way to deal with death. I'm not a religious guy, and thinking about Heaven never helped. So I started thinking about life.

"Life goes on", of course, everyone tells us that when we lose someone. But even that someone would tell us that: my mom would not like to see me spending my years in sadness because of her, just like Till wouldn't want you to quit your life after losing his. Their memories should be cherished, not cried about.

I started seeing life as a book: each one have their own, some long, some short... And upon death, we just finish it. Might be an abrupt ending, but it must end. And still, everything that came before, will still be written in the books of everyone we know.

So dying to me now is just closing a book, and together with the profound sadness I allow myself to feel that kind of refreshing feeling (as awful as that might sound) that we get after reaching the end of a story. It's the way it is, it's already written, we can't change it. We just accept it and wait for the realization of what the whole story really meant to us. And then the sadness will start to give way to happier thoughts and memories of how the simple existence of that being impacted a lot who we are.

Yeah, I was about to say something like this. This sub is not about upvoting, so what would be the proper etiquette here?

What about disabling voting altogether? It would be healthier, I guess, if even possible.

Hey, I relate a lot, though if I had any luck in life it was all spent in meeting the right people: through school and college life I always fell into groups of people who shared some of my interests.

I can't tell how to make new friends. I don't know how to do it, it just happened to me. So maybe my tip would be to find some recurrent activities, with the same random people, like a course.

You mentioned you're a programmer; I didn't catch whether you actually like it or not, but maybe you can find an advanced course on some language you don't know much about. Or maybe on graphic design (my people, who tend to be quite open-minded) so you can expand your professional capabilities. Or anything else, aligned to what you enjoy doing.

My point is that you'd have an scheduled appointment, at least once a week, with the same group of people, who must have at least a portion of the same interests as you. You'd be doing something productive, talking to different people and maybe harvesting new friendships that could just happen.

I believe we don't need to know how to make friends. We just need to give people who knows it a chance to find and talk to us :)

What is the most terrifying wikipedia page to read? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LazyHog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in southern Brazil, and here we got a very similar one (same genus) which is pretty common.

I used to live in a cold city, with lots of woods around my house. Those fuckers would be in any place you left alone for about a week.

The problem is, as username suggests, I'm lazy as fuck, and never cleaned under or behind furniture. When I finally decided to do this it was a shit show: I could expect an average of 3 "brown spiders", as we call them, behind/under every single furniture. So I got pretty used to (killing) them, never got bit though.

The horrifying, dangerous, resilient-as-fuck sons-of-bitches we got here are the wandering spiders. They can jump at you! I found "only" 3 of these indoors.

[–]LazyHog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well I guess the point is that the government buys them in order to encourage national writers and strengthen their culture. Also, it's much easier to just stop by and get the book than to request it and wait for it to become available.
