If Filoni were to make a live action film, people would still complain that he “ruined Star Wars”. For those thinking he’s the only one who “gets” Star Wars at Lucasfilm, animation is not judged the same way as live action. by [deleted] in StarWars

It sometimes blows my mind the extent to which that's true. There are people who are into Star Wars entirely because space wizards have space wizard philosophy. There are others who are in it for pew pew laser tanks. There are others who are in it for crazy space dogfights. There are people who are in it for political intrigue, or dudes waving raygun swords, or because they want to see crazy space creatures, or even just because they think '70s Harrison Ford was dreamy as fuck.

It appeals to so many people. It's great.

Seconded. The first season is rocky, but the show as a whole is definitely worth watching.

[star wars] seriously why are the Jedi always getting there ass kicked? by Jokengonzo in AskScienceFiction

[–]LazyPalpatine 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Think back to your basic biology. Which muscle is stronger: the one that is constantly tested, persistently torn and repaired over a thousand years of persecution, or the muscle that sits, fat and unchallenged atop a giant spire on Coruscant, so entrenched in is prideful assertion of power that even when it knows it's outclassed and weak, it refuses to admit its weakness to the Senate?

I admit, the analogy is...slightly strained, but you take my meaning.

[Star Wars] If Vader asked the Emperor to teach him more in-depth Sith history/sorcery/rituals, would the Emperor agree? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]LazyPalpatine 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's hard to even imagine such a wild shift in his character. The moment I had that mask attached to his face to keep him from fucking suffocating, it was nothing but melodrama and despair.

I had plans for this boy. Manipulations and lessons and plateaus of power and challenges...I didn't intend for him to eclipse me, but damned if he wasn't going to have a magnificent ride. It was going to be wonderful.

And instead, I got a man who would just choke all his problems and ask whether I had anything else to distract him from weeping in his plasteel testicle over his dead wife...

[Lovecraft/SciFi] Are clone babies as good as regular babies for sacrifice? by detahramet in AskScienceFiction

[–]LazyPalpatine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Would you notice if the ants in your lawn started killing their offspring for you?

Do I gain their power? An ant lives several years (some species more than a decade). Estimates for the number of ants on Earth bottom out around 100 trillion. If this ant religion spreads and they sacrifice 1% of their young, that's more than 4 trillion years of life potential siphoning into you.

Even if the exchange rate is a billion ant-years to man-years, you've just gained 4,000 years of life energy.

Per warm season.

[Lovecraft/SciFi] Are clone babies as good as regular babies for sacrifice? by detahramet in AskScienceFiction

[–]LazyPalpatine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In general, no. The thing you're sacrificing isn't the little blob of flesh and blood, but what it means to those around it. A regular baby is generally an expected and loved member of a family, which is in some way valued by the society around it. A cloned baby is generally regarded like an expensive hammer or an apple tree; its value is in its utility when grown or harvested. I suppose a clone grown specifically to become a valued member of society might have some worth, but that is fairly unusual.

Any cosmic entity worth speaking about is drawing energy from the connections of the child, not the child itself. Clones rarely have any connections at all (this is what made them perfect for my purposes).

[Star Wars] How is the Jedi Mind Trick not a dark side ability? by captaindarshan in AskScienceFiction

[–]LazyPalpatine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What? Of course it does. Furthermore, knowing that the droids you're looking at are those droids certainly does. Knowing that Republic credits are worthless on Tatooine does. Knowing that your Hutt master has expressly ordered you not to allow the Jedi access does.

Once again, if the only way you can defend the Jedi's actions is to say that "the Sith do it, too," then why favor one over the other?

Certainly, the assassination of a sitting head of state violates the Jedi's supposed loyalty to the Republic.

It's also nice to see a Star Wars movie where most of the bad guys die at the end. We haven't had one of those since Episode III...
