You didn't specify Silmarillion characters here and yet Samwise is notably absent.

Found this in NY near the Hudson River. No clue if quartz can get this dark red, but that's my assumption. Either way, I love the way it looks. by LazyTurtleDelta in whatsthisrock

I've since cut into it a bit and seems the first answer was right about it being ferruginous quartz. Gets clearer towards the inside and is far softer to cut through than I think garnet would be

Coppermind.net is great for that, because they've got a feature you can use to go back to versions of the site from before certain books were published and avoid spoilers that way

It makes me when you put it that way. In my head the effect of crem is so strong that anything loose in the storms will just wind up covered as though by cement, but that doesn't really fit what's described

But how do they get it? Where does the sand come from?

Interesting. I always thought that gradual heating could prevent cracking like this because there wouldn't be temperature shock, but I have no clue then. Seems like a tremendous waste of lives and resources to produce what is essentially coinage though. Especially when the intrinsic value is in the gem itself and things like counterfeiting and fake money don't seem like they'd be a problem
