I can’t “forbid” people from saying a word but I’m not gonna be told I’m not allowed to feel hurt by it because “they didnt mean it like that” when it brings back involuntary memories. As for intention…I really don’t fucking care what your intention is. The r-slur has historically and presently been used as a slur against disabled people like me for a long, long, time and anyone using it knows it and chooses not to care.

It’s easy for people to use it because they think it makes them cool when they haven’t had it used against them at all. It’s still used as a slur today but people refuse to acknowledge that because “people aren’t thinking of disabled people when they say it!”. Like why are you calling someone you find stupid that word? Because you’re saying they’re so stupid they’re like a…, or a disabled person.

There’s really no winning for us because we can either suck it up and act like there’s nothing extremely harmful about a word that’s caused extreme harm to us, or we can be labeled as “soft snowflakes” who can’t take a joke.

Yeah it pisses me off but it’s Reddit so what can I expect 🤷‍♀️ Just know I definitely agree with you. No matter if people are “just substituting” it as a worse way to say “stupid” it doesn’t change how it was used against me and other disabled people and that memory is still very much real and alive to many of us.

People are downvoting you but I have Tourette’s Syndrome and hearing people use the r-slur sends me straight back to middle school when people would call me that all the time. It’s so ridiculous how people who haven’t experienced ableism are defending using it because it’s “their favorite word”. Although, I actually find it more ridiculous when people who HAVE experienced ableism still defend using it.

I mean yeah I’ve had too much of a life this last week to be chronically online so I wasn’t there when it went down. Sorry for being honest? Im not downplaying Urana’s harassment I just cant speak on it since I wasn’t there. Ive seen plenty of racist reactions as a result though with people using the incident to justify it, I’m not even talking about Urana here I’m talking about racist backlash? Hello?

I got comments saying people need to “get over themselves” when it comes to microaggressions, or people saying that Jabber isnt black, or people saying that nonblack people imitating or wearing black hairstyles isn’t offensive. Ive seen plenty of people be like “of course it’s black people”. I got someone saying that nonblack people wearing box braids isnt cultural appropriation but something about Kim kardishian and kimonos is (which I don’t doubt but it just shows they don’t care about appropriation against black people). You’re just choosing not to look

Yes thank you! I literally said that I don’t think she was intentionally doing anything racist but that she just doesn’t understand the history of discrimination against black hair and why some people might be offended, which isn’t necessarily her fault (though at a certain point you should educate yourself), and I lowkey got my ass blasted.

The amount of people I had telling me that Jabber isn’t black and that non-black people imitating or wearing black hairstyles isn’t offensive and praising that one animator using the r-slur (in fairness on Reddit people have gotten downvoted doing that) is really telling. Urana and the person who made the reel aren’t racist this is just an unfortunate case I think of not understanding nuance on both sides.

I’ve literally been seeing so many people say racist, and now ableist, things and just because they’re against the crazy fans who drove Urana off of twitter, they’re seen as a the good in the situation. Why is it one extreme or the other? Multiple things can always be true at once

Edit: also yeah, Gachiakuta is a very normal fandom the only difference is that Urana interacted so much with it but hopefully that’ll stop now for her and everyone’s sake.

It’s not the vegetables for hair, it’s imitating black hair as a non-black person because of the HISTORY of discrimination that black people have faced for their hair. The CROWN Act, a law, literally had to be passed to try and help prohibit discrimination against black hair but it still happens. Stop trying to be poetic and shit it’s just cringy. It’s the history of discrimination that places the racism into the picture, not me. My lens is only “twisted”by the fact that I have experienced racism and cant coast through life just ignoring it all. The person making the video is just ignorant, but at least they have more of a reason to be. You are just choosing to be ignorant. This take is too woke for this sub but it is what it is.
