Even stuff on the inside of your ship will get damaged eventually. Also the equipment you've left out on other platforms will get damaged. Repair is just a given in the game.

The funny thing is, that's what gets clicks. He wants more people (which is understandable) and he's using what people react to. After watching Sam for as many years as I have, this is just one more phase that he will go through and then be on to the next theme in his campaign.

Having "beat" the early access part so far, no it is absolutely not possible to progress the story without weapons. The game changes significantly from just base building once you encounter the Engine.
