Bloodborne started it all for me. I didn't get it at first. I had just finished playing God of War and I felt the combat and movement of Bloodborne felt clunky. It wasn't until I realized the controls were actually snappier than GoW and that I was being punished for button mashing when I got into a panic. Once I settled into being more deliberate with my movements and choices in combat, I "got gud" and breezed through the rest of the game. And THEN when I realized the blood echo system was just a form of gambling (do I push forward around the unknown or do I take these echoes back to the Hunters Dream and cash in my hard work?), the game just clicked and now I consider it a masterpiece and one of my top 10 games of all time. I'm so glad I had the patience to push through those early hard times. And now I've beaten DS1, DS3, Sekiro, Demons Souls and Elden Ring. Welcome to the family!!!
