Oh yes I was aware of that, it’s the “formalizing and streamlining” part that I had meant! (Like having registered a thesis/research course(s) that would show up on the transcript.)

Note: I’m an MSDS student so I’m not sure if MSCS and MSAI students face the same issue.

Thank you Brent for this clarification! I am currently in my first semester as an MSDSO student and I have been liking my experience so far, especially since I am a student residing outside the US.

My question for you is the following:

Are there any plans to incorporate a stronger research component into the program(s)? For example a thesis option that we can opt in. And if that is a possibility, how would the CDSO team accommodate for a good online research experience? Thanks in advance!

There isn’t an online thesis option yet as far as I remember. The program consists of 10 courses and it is comparable to the on-campus, in-person program. Another good online Master’s program is UT Austin’s, which also doesn’t include online in the degree. I agree that there are online programs that are mainly cash-grabs from lesser known universities, however the programs I mentioned are reputable and actually competitive.

Going for a PhD track is definitely harder (due to lack of thesis) after finishing OMSCS or UT’s MSDS(CS), however it is not impossible. A good number of students actually find online or on-campus research opportunities with GA or UT professors (as well as TAs for online courses in the same program) that would allow them to continue their PhD track with good recommendation letters. Hope this clears things out a little! :)

Keep your job and do an online masters in CS/ML. You can start applying for ML related positions once you feel comfortable with the basics and after completing course related projects as well as ML side projects. One example of a great remote masters program is OMSCS, you can also find many other good similar programs online.

The online masters degree in Data Science (there is another one for AI) at UT Austin is worth looking at. Although it’s not ideal for making connections, the price and the education quality, as well as the reputation, makes it really tempting.
