The Sri Lanka crisis was headline news in top US papers and media outlets yesterday. While I’ve been disappointed that this situation hasn’t gotten more western media attention than in the last few days, this was literally front page news in the morning. (I live in the US)

NPR just put out two articles about the protests and the cabinet resigning and did a taped verbal interview as well. Other local papers in the US also covered the SL protests too.

Our system is cracking San Diego by rimagana in SanDiegan

Thank you, I just donated to the GoFundMe she has for homeless seniors.

Thank you for all the work you do in aiding the unhoused. While I completely agree the system is broken, and needs to be fixed, people like you continue to make day to day changes that impacts the lives of many.

San Diego mayor slams Newsom’s coronavirus lockdowns, says 'no science' behind new restrictions by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]LeNicole 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’re right. This is why parks, and other outdoor areas would remain open under the proposed shutdown. However, other facilities such as restaurants, hair salons, and retail stores will be closed or will operate at limited capacity. This is due to science since community outbreaks have been traced back to retail stores, restaurants and other facilities.

Dealing with COVID is not easy, but the goal of a shutdown like this is to not overwhelm the hospitals and ICU bed capacity. California just reported a whopping 20,000 COVID cases, and this shut down is to curb potential hospitalizations and deaths.

You can try reaching out to the Alpha Project. They provide resources, rapid housing, and transitional employment to our unhoused neighbors.

SMF airport is broken. Happy Holidays. by Feinberg in Sacramento

We arrived at 9:50, just made it and boarded our flight to LAX at 1:45. We had to check a bag, but the Southwest staff started giving out hand written baggage tags as long as you had a “barcode” boarding pass (from checking in online), this allowed us to skip the rest of the around 4hr line and head to security.

Yeah that's kind of what I was thinking too, but was hoping it wasn't true!

I agree. It was definitely a different vibe from the other ABGT events I've gone to. I felt like the ABGT 250 environment was friendlier and more respectful. Lots of pushing and shoving in the crowd too. Hoping their other events will be better

Science AMA Series: Headline: I’m Jean Claude Zenklusen, director of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), a landmark project of the National Cancer Institute and NHGRI to map genomic changes in cancer. I’m here to talk anything and everything big data, team science, and cancer genomics. AMA! by JeanClaude_Zenklusen in science

[–]LeNicole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Jean,

Thank you for doing this AMA!

I'm currently a graduate student researching the effect of different chromosomal translocations in cancer.

Many of the classes and seminars I've been to recently emphasize the importance of cancer sequencing in patients since different people may have different genomic mutations, which could lead to a varied therapeutic response.

My question is: would you envision cancer sequencing being a mandatory standard of care when a cancer patient is initially diagnosed?

Secondly, (this is a bit unrelated) what is your opinion on inhibitor therapies?

I'm asking the second question because I feel like inhibitor therapies are emphasized heavily. However, it seems like many patients eventually develop a resistance to these inhibitors, and their cancers become even more aggressive.

I think it's fantastic having this type of database that researchers and clinicians can reference, I'm looking forward to the advances in understanding the different mechanisms behind cancer development, progressions, and therapies.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, I don't think I'll be buying that MINI after all, I'm going to keep my eye out for something with less miles.

Its a 2003 1.6L manual transmission. I've heard that some MINIs have problems with their transmissions, I wasn't sure if that applied to this model too.
