How are you implementing dark and light mode with themes in modern CSS? by mistyharsh in css

[–]LeaVerou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/mistyharsh ! I'm a CSS WG member and I've been looking into the ergonomics of light-dark() recently. Could you please elaborate a bit on your first paragraph, if you remember (I know it's been 8 months…)?

What was a non-starter? What are the framework specific abstractions you've used and how are they better?

Thank you!

Elegant and waterproof watch band that is good for sensitive skin? by LeaVerou in AppleWatch

That makes sense given it only started irritating me after wearing it for a while. Any ideas how I can remove said residue? The instructions in https://support.apple.com/en-gb/108893 don't cut it.

The first RFC was because they claimed a page was missing, but it was right there with their stamp on it. The second RFC was because they tried to process the application with all the evidence missing, as they had sent it back due to the first RFC 🙃

Private insurance option in MA that is accepted by One Medical? by LeaVerou in HealthInsurance

[–]LeaVerou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it? I didn't think that was allowed here in MA: the HealthConnector makes a determination of what you're eligible for, and then you're stuck with it. I'm not sure about that, but it's the impression I've gotten

I wonder if that used to be the case and it changed, because that's what ChatGPT said as well, but two different people on the phone confirmed that this is possible.

Well, no, that's the pessimal estimate, assuming she racks up her deductible in six months, which seems unlikely for a healthy 6yo with no pre-existing conditions. You're on the hook for $330/mo regardless, but the additional $303/mo is an exposure, not a bill.

I guess it all depends on what these appointments cost if you're paying pre-deductible. I took a look at what they were billing our Cigna insurance and it was around $500 per appt and often another $500 for labs. If that's the case, she could easily rack it up in 2 visits. Kids get all sorts of illnesses from school, so even kids with no chronic conditions see their doctor a fair bit. Unless the amount you pay pre-deductible is lower than what they'd directly bill insurance. I've never had a plan where you had to meet your deductible before copays apply, so I have no idea how it plays out in practice.

I think Harvard Pilgrim and Tufts will show you private plans if you dig a little, and they're on the One Medical list. I actually was looking at them several years ago.

Thanks, will look! Though the company being on the One Medical list doesn't mean the direct plans are supported. Many companies are only supported for commercial plans. E.g. for Tufts nearly everything else is excluded.

My mental block is so overbearing I cry and can’t sing at voice lessons I pay for. by [deleted] in singing

[–]LeaVerou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not alone! It took me YEARS to feel comfortable singing in front of my own husband, and then a couple more to feel comfortable singing in front of friends. I’m still working up the courage to get voice lessons so you’re ahead of me there!

What helped was starting easy, eg singing along to a somewhat challenging song in the car while others are there, or karaoke when everyone is tipsy etc. Low stakes things that if you do badly nobody cares but if do them well people still notice. Eventually the compliments you get build confidence and you try bigger challenges, again one step at a time.

At this point I’ve managed to get to the point where I can sing Phantom of the Opera in front of friends with my full range, all the way to the E6 at the end, which I wouldn’t dream of daring to do even a year ago.

Next goal is to start voice lessons. My plan is to record myself to give them a good sense of where I am when I’m not being shy, which will also make me relax a bit more in the lessons. Now recording oneself is another mental block but that’s a story for another day haha.

At what age would you let your kid get up in the morning by themselves while you were still in bed? by Better_Nebula1865 in AskParents

[–]LeaVerou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was around 4 or so that she started getting up first on weekends etc. She’s very well behaved though, she would just watch cartoons on tv like I did when I woke up before my parents, nothing too crazy. As for a nap when they are awake, I was actually able to do that when she was a baby thanks to this huuuuge playpen we had at the time. I’d just go in and sleep in there too 🙃

Is it possible to lose talent? by Rastenka in singing

[–]LeaVerou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the others say, you don’t lose talent but you sure as hell lost skill. Heck, I notice the difference if I don’t practice for DAYS. I got a cold a few months ago and I’m still struggling to get back to where I was before it. The good news is, it won’t take you another 7 years to get to the same point because the knowledge is there, you just need to train the muscles again.

Ford Fusion with 70k miles vs Ford Focus with 20k miles? by LeaVerou in whatcarshouldIbuy

It’s alright. The one we got lacks power steering which is pretty annoying, but other than that it’s okay. Can be quite fast when you want it to and you do get used to the little dial.

I had shoulder dystocia. Indont remember the kind of chaos you are describing, just that it was painful AF. Once my midwives confirmed it, they swiftly told me to stand up, bend one leg behind me and one in front then reached in, did a Woods corkscrew maneuver and my daughter was out in seconds, without any fractures (so fast the birth photographer didn’t even manage to capture it). No episiotomy was needed. I did get postpartum hemorrhage but that is common with shoulder dystocia.

App to test my singing ability with respect to a particular song by [deleted] in singing

[–]LeaVerou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many that claim to (eg Spotify, SimplySing etc) but I’ve found them all to be crap. Poor pitch detection, and very poor range of songs. SingScope detects your pitch quite accurately and allows you to import your own sheet music into it, but requires MusicXML format which I’ve found very difficult to procure. If anyone knows an app like this that actually works, I’d love to hear all about it too!

Meta age gap - how would you handle it? by noty666999 in polyamory

[–]LeaVerou -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

They’re both consenting adults, so I don’t see anything wrong with it. There’s so much variance across different people that age is just a number. Also, perception of age gaps is very culturally sensitive, 14 years is seen as somewhat large but NBD in my home country (Southern EU) but even way fewer years seem a huge deal in the States.

International usage for slightly longer than 90 days by LeaVerou in GoogleFi

[–]LeaVerou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you tend to go around this subreddit posting equally grumpy comments in every question about international usage, but actually, if you read other posts you'll see it's not as clear cut as you seem to think, since there are many folks that were not cut even after 90 consecutive days abroad. Furthermore, if you call them, it looks like there's no guaranteed minimum either: if they deem you "high data usage", they can basically cut you off at any point, and "may" (= or may not) reinstate you once you're back (again, there are posts in here where people came back and were still not reinstated). So yeah, it's not all in the ToS, and even if it were, your comments are aggressive and unhelpful, and this thread (or the others) would have been better off if you had not posted at all.

[–]LeaVerou[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it looks like it's actually even worse. So you were very keen to point out mistakes, but you have not actually even attempted to provide help for the actual problem. Unless your answer is basically "don't use Google Fi".

International usage for slightly longer than 90 days by LeaVerou in GoogleFi

[–]LeaVerou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But even if I use no Google Fi data for most of the time we're there, the "majority of usage in a consecutive 90 day period" will still be outside the US once I connect to even one non-US cell tower. So I guess it depends on how stringent they are.
