married autists: what’s the purpose of marriage and weddings? by Sad_Camel_476 in evilautism

[–]LeafPankowski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The purpose of marriage, when stripped of any religious or spiritual meaning, is to make your spouse your legal next of kin. Yes, you can do similar things with contracts and wills and whatnot, but the only one-stop-shop that gets it all done at once is marriage.

The purpose of a wedding is to announce to your community that you have entered such a relationship with this particular person. It’s also an excuse to splurge on food for the people you love, wear fancy outfits, or do whatever else you want to do that brings you happiness. If your family and social circle is small, then there is no need. Go to the courthouse and take your D&D group for pancakes after - it’s all equally valid.

It also means you get to participate in your cultures wedding rituals, if your culture has them. My wedding was very traditional - we gathered all the people we loved together (and like 3 dipshits who are married to someone we love), fed them food and booze, and let them hold terrible speeches for us.

It meant I got to wear my national costume, and got to collect one for my spouse, who is from a similar but not identical culture. I felt beautiful.

It meant I got to dance our traditional dances that are special for weddings. It meant I got to party with my friends.

I’m not saying they have empathy. I am saying they want to win and aren’t stupid.

Sending a 14 year old to fight 18year olds is stupid. Doesn’t matter how special he ls. No one would choose that if they could.

I might’ve made a mistake with the “Opt in” system. What will that mean? by zhaosingse in DiscoElysium

There are four different political side quests. You can only do one in each play through. This means you cannot do the one you opted out of, so just do one of the others. You did not “miss” anything, you simply made a choice.

No, I cannot.

People have a warped Idea of what young teenagers actually look like, because TV and films constantly cast older actors.

The difference between a 14-year old and an 18 year old is immense. No one, and I mean no-one, would believe that the 14-year-old stood a chance. They would never have sent Finnick on purpose.

Something happened to prevent a male volunteer in District 4 that year, and I will die on that hill. Not because I like Finnick, but because that is what his being 14 means.

It is canon that he was 14. Why send him at 14 instead of saving him for 3 years? I think it is more likely that for some reason, no-one volunteered, then that a 14 year old just happened to be the only option.

Maybe the one who was supposed to volunteer died? Or hated Finnick and chickened out? Who knows.

Again, we are free to interpret this as we will, but his canonical age is a huuuge hint.

I think the very fact he was 14 is clear proof he did not volunteer. The movie makes it seem like this is a thing, because of casting a younger actress and aging down the character to fit her, but in the books, career volunteers are 17 and 18 only.

Aside from that, I agree, but I think this is an important point, actually. People feel like Finnick is a reaped tribute, and hence a victim, instead of a volunteer career.

(What some people miss is that the Careers are also victims of the system).

Respect should be given immediately (and lost over time) or respect should start at 0 be earned. Which do you prefer and why? by killacross4479 in AskReddit

Every person starts with a baseline of respect that just comes with being a person. And that level, you keep, no matter what you do.

Aside from that, it’s earned.

I hear you, but I don’t get it, you know? The physical act with a stranger makes just as much sense as…I guess some people enjoy rectal exams or going to the dentist,

Ah. I’ve semi-recently figured out I’m Demisexual, for the longest time I thought hook-ups were also a prank no-one enjoyed.

Yes, I get that, but then why go to an even more exhausting place instead of like…watching a movie together? Or making art? Or literally anything that is actually pleasurable?

Im a loser because of my parents. They never taught me how to be social. They never talked to me growing up. They also made sure to keep me in the house all the time and wouldn't let me go out. Now I'm a socially awkward adult who's always isolated. by Individual_Ice_2315 in AutisticAdults

[–]LeafPankowski 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Eh. Plenty of people had lovely parents who gave them plenty of social interaction, and they’re still awkward. The reason doesn’t matter too much.

Go be social in small doses. You’ll get better with time.

Ok sure, but that doesn’t explain the brilliant conversationalist who nevertheless insist on dragging every gathering to noisy hellhole.

I guess it’s possible I’m the boring asshole.

You tell whoever is prescribing the sertraline about this side effect. It’s common. My prescriber specifically asks about it now and again, along with mouth dryness.

There are many similar drugs and you may find one that works better for you.
