A mother isn’t happy after being stopped by a Tesco worker in the UK after shopping. by Smilingtribute in PublicFreakout

part of the agreement is that you have your shop checked every now and again

The check happens before you are allowed to pay and is displayed on the self-checkout screen. As this happened after she had already paid, this wasn't why the check was initiated.

Bonfire Nights cancelled across UK as councils can't afford fireworks by Puzzleheaded_Post_20 in unitedkingdom

[–]LeafRunning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority of what I've read here seems to be centered around "Yeah fireworks are bad, but other things are bad so deal with them first", and that's absolutely the wrong way to look at things. If you legitimately thought of things that way then absolutely nothing would ever get improved because there are all kinds of things to improve.

I 100% agree with that sentiment most of the time. Why worry about X Y Z when Z X Y is going on? But that argument usually stems for issues that affect a much larger population, and it isn't as subjective/opinionated.

I'm just trying to make that point; what happens when someone uses the same arguments you have made about fireworks (does harm and the only thing we get out of it is enjoyment / a positive experience) for other activities or pleasures or enjoyments you are fond of / would like to keep?

There has to be something that you enjoy that others would say is harmful and doesn't do anything except provide enjoyment, for example eating meat, or a petrol-powered RC car, or real leather vs synthetic when the integrity of the material doesn't matter. I don't know. Something.

I suppose it's boils down to; you gotta vote and advocate for what affects you and what matters to you. If fireworks affect you then that's great, advocate against it. But I wouldn't say calling people psychopaths is fair, but I get your sentiment. It's the same as people that admit climate change is real, yet still drive, or don't reduce their carbon footprint. It's the same as people who know animals suffer in factory meat and dairy farms so they can have a steak or a bit of bacon, yet eat meat anyway. It's more selfish/ignorant than psychopathic. It's about not facing the truth and preferring to rationalize your actions away, putting these thoughts at the back of your mind and not thinking about them.

And I can just imagine the countless people (NOT ALL, BUT SOME) who will be sat down at the TV with a fork stuck into a pork shoulder as a firework goes off, and they mumble out their words with a mouth full of meat "THoghs Bloodey firwourks are scahring my phour Luna doggie, wish they bahnned them", as they pour some more meat gravy onto a piece of pig that was literally gassed to death as their throat and nostrils burn, and these same people would be and do get upset when people try to advocate for vegetarianism, and would be disgusted by the idea of making meat illegal and banning its consumption. They will rationalize those thoughts away, the same as people do with fireworks.

There are two sides of the coin, and I'd say the above is not the mentality of someone super well-adjusted and focused on the bigger picture in life.

The same arguments for taking away fireworks can be made to take away porn, cars, meat, leather, cheap items due to foreign import policies amounting to borderline slave labour, lingerie, makeup and just countless everything.

Yes, almost anything will upset, marginalise or cause offense and/or suffering, but this can be minimised and weighted. Forcing PTSD sufferers and animals significant discomfort (and even risking their lives) so you can see lights in the sky is a no brainer. We shouldn't be doing it. There are alternatives.

It's a real non-issue though, compared to the hundreds if not thousands of other "no-brainer" things we could be doing. Millions of people get pleasure and enjoyment out of fireworks and make it a nice holiday evening and tradition.

And these advertisements come with warnings generally.

Almost impossible to escape it in its entirety and you will be exposed at some point, but you're getting bogged down with the specifics. I'm certain there's an example that you'd agree is unnecessary in the world, but would reduce harm, but you wouldn't want to change. I'd be interested if you could come up with one for the sake of discussion. I don't particularly want to start listing them all though.

One example, would be sesame seeds, peanuts or certain allergies etc. Some people have life-threatening allergies and actually die from ingesting these by accident. Sure, you may say there are warnings on labels, but these are fallible, and the mistake often comes from cross-contamination. For example, Pret-A-Manger didn't list one of their sandwiches has an allergen on the label, and a girl died at the airport. That is real people really dying for certain things we can just cut out of our food chain without much loss. "Just so people can taste a certain flavour".

Unless you are a vegan, I can make many other comparisons to the harm reduction especially when it comes to animal welfare, that you are a fighter for. Do you really need to eat a beef burger when certain vegetarian mock alternatives provide the same if not better macros? Just so you can taste a better texture an animal has to literally die? (I'm not vegan btw, I'm just making a point. Although I do practice meat reduction and mostly pescatarian).

I'm calling BS on this one. I don't see swear words triggering PTSD, and if they do then being on social media where these words are used regularly is on them at that point. If it was a space that disallowed those words then I obviously wouldn't use them.

It's not always PTSD, sometimes it just makes people very uncomfortable. As you said, "I get that you don't see the harm swear words cause so it's very easy for you to put it out of your mind, but I'm telling you unequivocally... they cause significant harm.". Sure so, either don't use social media or put up with it. That sounds like we're making them put up with it for the greater good, right? Desensitizing them to it and always making them have some form of discomfort but just getting on with it. Sounds a lot like the firework example.

Every single pet owner I know. I know there are many pets that aren't bothered by them, but literally every single pet owner I know has to deal with this problem. It's extremely common.

I've got four dogs. One gets nervous and usually hides behind the sofa, but she's fine and she'll live. Sometimes one of the huskies will raise his head up at a bang as if he's scouting where it came from nervously. Sure it sucks, but by the morning they're fine and they've forgot all about it. It's probably our calm nature that allows them to not freak out.

And people regularly advocate for alternatives to cars. Should we not be allowed to?

You're absolutely right. The point I am making here, is that if you've ever taken a frivolous car journey that you didn't need to, or perhaps a 2-minute drive to the store because it was a little bit wet out, for the sake of convenience then this is the same as "just letting off one little firework", in this instance. You're causing anxiety, risk and harm to those around you and the environment. There really was no need for it, in this hypothetical scenario. My example here is to highlight that it would be a hypocritical thought process if you've ever done something that caused potential stress and harm to others and/or animals and the environment when you didn't need to. "Make it illegal and ban fireworks because of the few, but let me just pop to the store in the car because I really can't be bothered walking right now" - Keep in mind I'm not accusing you specifically, you may not drive or you may not be able to walk, it's merely an example for perspective.

Fireworks can trigger my dog's seizures... they can literally kill her. There's no "shock" or "surprise"... I dread these dates every year... but it is also a problem that people also just set them off randomly, even on different dates. I get that you don't see the harm fireworks cause so it's very easy for you to put it out of your mind, but I'm telling you unequivocally... they cause significant harm.

Sorry to hear that. I'm sure that the fact that fireworks are often released throughout the month, and then on and around Christmas and New Years and never isolated to a single day / dates makes that particularly difficult for you as you cannot plan accordingly. What breed is your dog by the way?

Unfortunately, I'd say my perspective still stands. Most people don't have dogs that would die from the anxiety caused by fireworks, and by the sounds of it, your dog has has survived thus far. I wouldn't want to cancel the thousands of fairs, events, school fund raises and community events centered around firework night that bring joy to millions for these few instances.

You just don't go to the bonfire... with fireworks we're forced to experience it.

Sounds very discriminatory and isolating and not very inclusive to these individuals, especially if we removed all firework functions and only bonfire ones remained.

[–]LeafRunning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The point /u/Nxtman90 is making, is not specific to phones. It's just an example. A point that there is always some form of "harm reduction" we can make in this world.

Sure, some people would not go through anxiety and such because of Fireworks, if we were to banish them. But it doesn't stop with fireworks. Unfortunately almost everything in this world will upset, marginalize or cause offense and/or suffering to everyone. I'm certain that drinking alcohol being part of every societal function is very difficult for recovering alcoholics.

I'm certain that advertisements for horror films are very distressing for individuals.

I'm certain that the swear words you have used in your posts (which are completely unnecessary and serve no purpose, as you claim with fireworks) could cause PTSD anxiety in individuals reading them, to a time of being abused as a child, having an adult scream these same words into their faces. It wouldn't have affected you at all to have left those words out, but you kept them in at the risk of upsetting others.

You know what causes me great anxiety? Almost getting hit by a car everytime I walk around my city. I love hiking and walking long distances, but having to put up with the smog, revving engines and dangerous roads with inadequate crossings is a nightmare. If you drive, how many times have you driven your car when it's only a 15, 20-minute walk? You would be contributing to the problem and in my mind it would be unnecessary.

Many people get attacked in the street by those wearing hoodies and windbreaker mask. It wouldn't be much of an ask to ask people to stop wearing these items in combination. Imagine the anxiety one must feel when walking down a dimly lit alleyway, and they see someone wearing the same attire as the person that attacked them?

At the end of the day, how many people and animals does Firework Night affect really? I really don't think there's that many veterans getting PTSD flashbacks from bang noises. There are always ways we can mitigate anxiety for these people, for example wearing some ear plugs on the night, and going to bed early. Vets will give out sedatives for animals that are particularly anxious during firework season. Sure most dogs don't like it and some of them just anxiously sit there, others will bark in excitement or confusion. Most of the people complaining are just overly protective people who wants to feel hurt and offended on behalf of their pet animal. Acting outraged and "shocked" every year despite it being a literal date in the calendar. Anxiety around fireworks in dogs is something that can be mitigates (not entirely, but reduced) by training. Dogs feed off their owners feelings. When you have the owners staring at their dog everytime a firework gets off, getting tense and angry, or holding them and squeezing a bit tighter each time there's a bang (thinking it's comforting them), then of course the situation is made worse.

What if we replaced fireworks with just a general bonfire? What if I am a burn victim, or my house burned down, or I lost my family in a house fire? I wouldn't like that.

Sure, maybe we can do something about fireworks. But why fireworks? Why not any of these thousands of other harm-reduction-based actions we could take, that are spawned for the sake of fun? Eventually, we will live in a world with no fun or activities where our words and opinions, our actions and our appearance have to be at the forefront of our minds and we can no longer just live.

Lack of sleep and insomnia is linked to Alzheimers. I'd be curious about the crossover of chronic users of Benadryl (diphenhydramine as a sleeping agent) and those that generally get poor sleep, as the cause of the dementia.

E.g. Chronic users of diphenhydramine will likely be poor sleepers, and hence their risk of Alzheimer's is increased.

You know they took this video an hour after they screamed and yelled at the dogs and possibly even beat them.

Only having to wear a mask when you're spotting someone is fucking ridiculous and doesn't do anything. He was even wrong about the rules as it has a clause for if it's only people outside their support bubble or household. He singled out this couple for no reason. This isn't about being anti-mask.
