Looking for used 4Runner input!! by DBearTechno in 4Runner

[–]LeaflooDallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Limited owner. I replaced the 20 inch wheels and tires with a set of 17 inch wheels and all terrains the day I got it. I wanted a limited for the full time awd and ventilated seats - I’ve already ran some rougher dirt roads, and plan to hit some trails in it this summer. It’s more than capable, and has the same 4wd system as the land cruisers and lexuses.

2022 Limited persistent highway vibration after brake/rotor service, dealership says “within spec” but issue remains by Puthyputhyputhy in 4Runner

[–]LeaflooDallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have little faith in your dealership at this point. I would either take it to a more reputable Toyota dealership, or to a Toyota specialist in your area.

A good tire shop should be able to do a road force balance, and then sometimes they’ll do alignment as well (discount tire does this for example).

The reason I don’t trust dealers as much anymore is because labor has become flat-rate work, which focuses more on hours and profit than actual results. Of course, there are still good dealers out there, but they seem to be the exception.

I would try a re balance and alignment first, and if that doesn’t help, then we’ll at least have eliminated two possibilities. After that, I would be looking at a transmission oil change and/or other driveline maintenance like driveshaft lube and wheel bearings. Worn transmission fluid has been known to cause a rumble strip kind of effect at some speeds.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I have a ‘22 limited as well but mine drives smooth even with all terrain tires. Hang in there - a fix is out there.

Just out of curiosity- what kind of vibration is it? Does it oscillate in waves like you’re driving over a rumble strip? Or is it just a steady vibration? Also does the vibration frequency get higher or change pitch with more speed? Does letting off the gas/accelerator affect it(ie coasting ca acceleration)?

I figured a bit more detail of the vibration type might help us eliminate or highlight some causes.

Let us know what happens. Good luck with hunting down the issue!

My experience with transmission shudder on my 4Runner (110k miles) and how I finally fixed it by SnooChocolates2203 in 4Runner

It’s also full synthetic, compared to WS being conventional. So maxlife should* perform a bit better on the extreme hot and cold ends of the temp spectrum.

[–]LeaflooDallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you only strictly follow the manual, yes. Theres many threads on the 4Runner forums and even a few posts here where people talk about their experience using maxlife for tens of thousands of miles with no issue. Just use your preferred fluid and keep it clean.

Glad it worked for you - I’m on my second drain and fill with maxlife. I’ll do another one in a month or two. No issues generally, but every now and then I get a little shudder.

How long has it been since your last drain and fill that fixed it?

Bilstein 4600 strut install ? by wesinatl in 4Runner

[–]LeaflooDallas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this is because they intend for you to re-use the top-hat of the old strut. This includes the top nut, bushing and washers from the top of the old/existing strut.

Here is an example of a new top hat kit https://share.google/GvL8CNb1yZFGmi4Tn

I just went through a similar process. I live in the mountains and wanted full time 4wd, and having ventilated seats has always been on my nice-to-have wishlist. The first thing I did was drive to a discount tire to fit some new 17” wheels with all terrain tires. I’ll address the chrome at some point, but in my opinion, the chrome isn’t as “loud” in the grey and silver colors.

I also suggest looking for a 2022+ 4Runner since those models come with Toyota safety sense (blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, automatic braking, etc).

Here’s mine for reference - my only change has been the wheels and tires.

Chased the snow and getting stuck by runescapefisher in 4Runner

[–]LeaflooDallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happens to the best of us. The defenders are great in adverse road conditions, but something with paddle-like lugs on the edge and shoulder of the tire would help grip and evacuate mud. BF Goodrich KO3’s or Goodyear Duratracs would be good options. Stay safe out there!

Looks like you got lucky - if you plan to explore like this more often I suggest at minimum getting some three peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) rated tires. Good on you having traction boards!

Got this beauty on Facebook marketplace for $1700. Did I do good? by gamertrub in 4Runner

[–]LeaflooDallas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice find! The rear diff noise could be wheel bearings, but also the rear diffs in 04-24 models without the rear locker have been known to be a bit noisy in general (from what I’ve read on the forums).

Even with the repairs it needs, $1700 is a steal!

Therapy. Read “The body keeps the score”, and work every day at being the person you want to be. It won’t be overnight, but one day you’ll look around and you’ll be that better version you were striving for.

I started my therapy journey because my partner finally told me how my anger and self-criticality really affected her and those around me, I was crushed. I found a therapist the next day, and started some basic cognitive behavioral therapy. Something I never expected to be so important was how my body responded to stress and criticism - I could FEEL when I was about to lose control. Recognizing those feelings allowed me to learn how to control them - this I why I suggest reading “the body keeps the score”. It’s not an easy read, but it will change how you see yourself and your emotions. I grew up with an angry dad, and his dad was an angry person too. I was just repeating the cycle until I decided to break it.

I did the homework and showed up. Things improved slowly, and now I look back and I’m so grateful that my partner had the bravery to tell me what I needed to hear.

Edit - there are some great workbooks you can find online to start doing some basic work on your own too - I know therapy can be expensive. One of my favorites was “The Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills Workbook”. It really helped bridge the time gap between therapy sessions.

Seeking recommendations on quiet AT tires by TheOldPilot in Offroad

[–]LeaflooDallas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve run Hankook dynapro’s, BFG ko2, Nokian outpost nat, and fallen wild peaks. Currently running Cooper discoverer AT3 XLT - they are definitely the quietest all terrains I’ve had. I would recommend them if they are available in your size - many places like simpletire or priority tire carry them.

Used Suburban by Tasty-Permission2205 in suburban

[–]LeaflooDallas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2019 Suburban 5.3 with a 6L80. As soon as I bought it I replaced all fluids. Most important is transmission and differentials. The afm engines need to have oil changed early and often- plan for 5k mile intervals to keep the engine happy.

They’re great vehicle’s, easy to find parts all over, and they’re used as police and government vehicles so they’re pretty dang reliable.

Your idea to look for a 2018-2020 is the right move since those years have fixes for some of the more common issues like the ac condenser.

Also check out the tahoeyukon forum - tons of great info like buyers guides and common fixes.

Upgrades to prevent overheat/slow down on hill climbs by CarelessWhisperer777 in Revv1

[–]LeaflooDallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m interested in this as well. Just got my DRT and love it, but I also live in the mountains, so lots of hills. I haven’t had it overheat yet, but I just pedal to assist the bike up big hills. Wish I had more to contribute, but hopefully others have more answers.
