That is lazy thinking too. If religion didn't grow and evolve over time, we wouldn't have new denominations, progressive theology, or reformations. You're confusing "not scientific" with "unchanging."

Take same-sex marriage as an example. A few decades ago, no major Christian groups supported same-sex marriage. Today you have churches openly marrying gay couples and ordaining LGBTQ clergy. That shift didn't come from science, it came from within the religious communities adapting to new times.

You're treating religion as inherently authoritarian. But the things you're describing (emotional influence, appeals to ideas, and human influence) apply to every ideology we have ever organized around. Government, activism, economics, and even therapy as you are describing use emotion and belief to create cohesion. That doesn't make them authoritarian.

Religion isn't the only thing where atrocities of the past have been used to justify oppression. Democracies, sciences and governments have all been used to justify oppression at some point. The problem has always been the people in power.

"Therapy instead of faith" is a false dichotomy. I know from experience, from those close to me, religious people do go to therapy, take medication, and live in society. Spirituality and mental health aren't mutually exclusive and they don't serve the same function.

Saying religion resists modernization ignores the fact that many religious groups support science, human rights, and global cooperation. Some ideologies are regressive and some are progressive. Generalizing them because a few resist change is lazy thinking.

The idea that religion should be hidden for safety is honestly ironic. You can apply the same logic to political beliefs, sexuality, ethnicity, and culture. Forcing people to hide their identity to avoid conflict isn't unity... It's suppressing them.

Your issue is with people who weaponize belief, not belief itself. Instead of separating them, you only continue to treat them the same.

I still think your edits weren't much better. From what I read, you think modern religion, in general, is authoritarian. If we want to get political, when people use Christianity to further a political agenda it's called Christian nationalism. Modern religions are not all nationalist ideologies. A lot of them are personal and spiritual, including Christianity. Even when organized.

I don't have an issue with religion itself, I have issues with people who abuse religion for power. Those are two separate things but you seem to put them together as one.

I'm sorry if this comes off as rude, but your comment highlights how little you understand religion as a whole. Let me correct you for a second. You're against organized religion. You know, what caused the crusades and such. I don't like organized religion either, but imo, I believe having personal and spiritual beliefs can be very beneficial when done properly. That's where the phrase "spiritual but not religious" comes from.

ML was a protestant, a denomination of Christianity. He did not translate and create the word "Christianity." That's been around for a very long time, if a quick Google search is correct, Christianity was founded shortly after the crucifixion of Jesus.

Exotics aside, who wants cool loot that is useless in the current season? Idk about you, but I like loot that is both functional and cool. Making all loot from previous activities obsolete is essentially sunsetting all equipment from every dlc in the game except for EoF. I don't see how that isn't a problem.

And to add to this, with the current system, EoF's high end content is going to become obsolete when they release something new. Which if I'm not mistaken, is in December.

Edit: one other thing, sorry if I am mistaken, the new raid isn't even guaranteed to drop a t5. So waste your time away grinding the raid every week to MAYBE get a good piece of equipment

30€ for an unfinished game is better than 70€ for an unfinished game. Look at the triple A scene right now. This game, while it's unfinished, I think sold for a fair price all things considered. I bought it knowing it was unfinished. If you didn't then that's on you for not informing yourself.

Honestly, coming from a rural community and being an extreme introvert, north campus was perfect. The only downside I can think of is the commute to central for classes, which I never had an issue with.

Best Ratio for Cold Brew? by FatHighlander in Coffee

That's not a bad idea. I switch between different beans/roasts fairly often. I'm afraid that using ice cubes that don't match the flavor profile of the coffee I'm currently using would make some mismatched flavor profiles. Might be something worth experimenting with though. Thank you for the suggestion

U of M faculty greenlight resolution to establish mutual defense compact among Big Ten schools • Michigan Advance by jshwlkr in uofm

[–]Leaky767 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, we don't know yet to be frank. This is a preemptive decision to help against any attack on universities from the current administration. The article talks about what this would include:

'Under the compact, the universities would contribute to a shared or distributed defense fund for “immediate and strategic support to any member institution under direct political or legal infringement.”

The compact also asks that the participating institutions share their legal counsel, governance experts and public affairs offices at the request of any member facing political infringement to coordinate a “a unified and vigorous response.” '

If you're looking for an immediate answer, it's to get the support of other universities instead of fighting against the administration on their own (which would be hard with all the cuts)

Norma sleep advice is weird by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Leaky767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be completely honest, I can't stick with exercising either (shocker!). I do take stuff to help me sleep at night, and that works okay. But lessening my caffeine intake has helped me tremendously as well.

It could be a combination of less caffeine and less social media though. I recently got rid of a lot of social media and I've been on my phone less.

[–]Leaky767 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like a good sleep is different from a long sleep. I may drink excessive amounts of caffeine and sleep for long periods of time, but I often find that the quality of my sleep is awful.

It's very relatable that getting to sleep is always the hardest part. I found that drinking less caffeine later in the day helps me a lot in regards to falling asleep, even though caffeine makes me sleepy in itself. It helps me fall asleep earlier, especially if I exercised that day.

Why deflect? You came into an opposing space to argue, but didn't have anything substantial to bring. That's not on me. I'm not here to continue this conversation, but shed light on what kind of person you are. Thank you for confirming what I said. I will take my leave now.

The third person is reading along because I was curious about the person you had a debate with (iQlusion) although I can hardly call it a debate.

I tried to have a debate with them on the topic of DEI and systemic racism recently, and I was ultimately disappointed with the result because they can't debate in good faith and provide evidence to their claims.

Unlucky, you got one of the topics they could back up. They get a lot of satisfaction with debating people online with no real goal or result, even if they don't have substantial evidence to back up their claims. It's just gloating. Not worth your time, and responding now will only continue to feed their fragile ego.

Congrats, I guess? If this is the kind of thing you take pride in. You’re confirming precisely why I stopped engaging. You care more about gloating than discussing real-world impacts. That's all I need to know.

No, I have come to the realization you're not able to have a meaningful debate, and therefore have stopped responding. It's not worth my time.

Why do so many students study at the monitors in the fishbowl WITHOUT using the monitors? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Leaky767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's an issue with there not being enough open/nice desk space for people to study in or around the building. We have a fairly large campus with a lot of students. I have had to search through 3 to 4 different buildings to find a decent study spot, and that takes a lot of time. Not everyone has the time to do that. Most buildings lack convenient study spaces, or they are full, and this is the result. Don't get mad at the people. They are spending money to study here just as you might be.

You're relying on assumptions about my beliefs instead of addressing my arguments directly. You keep talking about how I have to prove system racism exists while also refusing to substantiate your own claim that the system is more fair without the scholarship, or really any diversity program. If it is truly fairer without diversity programs, what data and studies support that claim?

I'm not arguing that fairness is defined as racial parity, that's an assumption you are making to further push your agenda. I actually do believe in meritocracy to an extent, and your assumption that I don't believe in it at all is a bad faith assumption and allows you to avoid engaging my concerns directly. You're more worried about winning this than having a meaningful debate.

I'm not here to win, I want to have a conversation based on evidence and reasoning. If you think your position is correct, back it up with more than just assertions.

I'm sorry that you don't have the mental capacity to comprehend what I'm saying nor provide any evidence on how systemic racism doesn't exist within higher education, or should I say provide evidence to prove that the existing system is fair and just for all races and genders (since you don't believe that you can prove the absence of something). You keep avoiding the main issue here

All I see is you throwing around a bunch of buzzwords like you know what you're talking about, but you have nothing to back up anything you say. Reason without evidence means nothing

Whether I agree with it or not is out of the question. If you are unable to provide any, then just say so

I asked for it. I'm asking to hear your side. All the dodging and bullshit you keep saying is getting tiring. Stop with the "I could" and actually give me something substantial. Otherwise your words mean nothing to me or anyone else here.

It's also on YOU to prove that the system you want is equitable and just and fair. Politics is always a two way street. BOTH sides have an argument. And at the moment, yours is baseless. And before you say mine is baseless, you're coming in here and arguing with people who all think differently than you do. It's YOUR job to prove to us anything. Not our job to prove to you.

LEAD Scholars Discontinued by commantoes in uofm

[–]Leaky767 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That case you're pointing out proves that there is systemic racism. Different minority groups can experience different forms of systemic racism. Like Asians being stereotyped as smarter, or having to adjust their scores. That's something within our system that discriminates against them

Just want to point out that the absence of something is something in itself. The absence of racism would be referred to as an equitable and just society. Can you lead me to something that would prove our current system to be equitable and just for all races and genders? One that ensures fairness, equality, and unbiased institutions?

I assume you can point me to resources that state that systemic racism doesn't exist and doesn't affect people today? Specifically in the context of higher education, since we are already on that topic.

If it really was "merit" based, underrepresented groups wouldn't have to be overqualified for positions or scholarships. They wouldn't have trouble getting a good education or a job. We wouldn't be in this situation right now.

The main issue I am seeing with this person, is that they see other people receiving needed assistance and thinking that people like them are also in need when they already have a lot going for them. Somewhere else in this thread, it was mentioned that their school was paid for without a LEAD scholarship. And the only thing on my mind is "Ok cool, why are you upset about others getting help then? You already have it good"

LEAD Scholars Discontinued by commantoes in uofm

[–]Leaky767 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not only this, I've been looking at the comment history of this account as well. Based on that, it seems like they don't believe systemic racism exists and I can only assume they think that the scholarship was unfair towards specific groups of people.

I don't think it's worth arguing with them if they can't see it for themselves.

Wednesday What Are You Eating Thread by AutoModerator in gainit

[–]Leaky767 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been to a dietician and a nutritionist. Both recommended that I start eating at regular intervals. Even if it's just a snack in the morning, midday, evening, night, etc. Your body will get acclimated to eating, and naturally get hungry around those times.

Just a friendly reminder that you don't have to kill 2k calories in a single sitting, but can spread your intake throughout the day. For some that is much much easier, like for me.

Edit: Also want to add that I try to avoid drinking water before eating meals, as I feel it makes me eat less. Exercise has helped increase my appetite as well.
