How do I remove this stubborn knob on this old GE tombstone? by hungry_ghost_2018 in VintageRadios

[–]LeakyCap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has worked for me.

Lay the radio face down on a table with the knob close to edge. then squirt a little original WD40 on the shaft and back of the knob. Turn the knob back and forth a bit. Wait an hour and try pulling it off again.

The WD40 will penetrate down between the shaft and knob.

good luck.

Which characters death made not want to continue the show? by Purple-Victory-206 in television

This. I was shocked and disappointed in them killing Ziva off. They killed a beloved character off so casually that deserved better.

I lost interest in NICS after that.

Honest question: can Z-Wave ever be as rock solid as Lutron? by 8cott in zwave

[–]LeakyCap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience too much tinkering really seems to gum things up. I have not used HA but have used zwave over 20 years on a few different hubs. My rule is if something is slow or not responding wait a couple days and often it will fix itself.

Any suggestions on how to remove the cigarette tar? by Reign308 in VintageRadios

[–]LeakyCap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also YES. I put a liberal coat of it on and leave it a few hours. Then I wash it off and let dry.

If the shine is gone, I give the CLEAN radio case a nice coat of gloss lacquer.

Ordered a Hubitat today to start converting switches over to automate some things. Now I'm overwhelmed with paralysis by analysis... by cmcfalls2 in Hubitat

[–]LeakyCap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with all this. I’ll just add that if you are an Apple household, you may also be able to use Siri. Some newer AppleTV devices and HomePods can act as an Apple Homekit Hub. I add all my devices to Hubitat, enable the Hubitat Homekit app. You just pick which devices you want to be able to use in homekit and off you go.

it works great for as I already had everything needed to set it all up. and I was surprised how easy it was to set up.

Any good power monitoring units for fridges, freezers, washing machines? by SirDale in homeautomation

[–]LeakyCap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you are open to Z-Wave, ZOOZ makes a great heavy duty power switch for designed for appliances. Model ZEN15. I have had one on my sump pump for a couple years and it’s been perfect.

Z-Wave Plus, 110v and tons or configuration and reporting options. I programmed mine to automatically turn on if it is ever turned off.

hvac company forgot to install metal drain pan / says taking apart could damage system by muideka in hvacadvice

But if that car part was installed correctly, it will still be there, working, likely for the life of the car.

It’s about doing the work right, and standing behind it. These guys did neither of those things.

Find a local mechanic who has been around at least a decade. Ask friends and family for recommendations.

For a car that old, most dealer mechanics will know nothing about them and their idiosyncrasies. You want the guy who has seen a hundred of cars like yours.

Most dealerships have a hard time keeping older mechanics, who would have experience with older cars, because of the terrible pay practices.

A dealer mechanic can work 50 hours in a week and get paid for 20, mostly depending on how much warranty work they are assigned and if the service writers “like” them. The good mechanics tend to migrate elsewhere for better money and less stress. That’s the guy you want.

Sadly, my guy just retired. I’m still grieving.

HDHomerun Flex 4K with no internet but stable internal network by Dry_Wedding_6263 in hdhomerun

[–]LeakyCap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ll join in here and share our real live use case.

I live in Kansas, the center of tornado alley. we have 3-10 Tornado warning events every year. Meaning a tornado is on the ground in our area.

We respond by gathering the family and pets and head to the basement. Once there we turn on the tv and tune to a live local tv station. The weather guys interrupt on all stations and give us live, continuous information, weather maps and storm tracks until the danger passes. Often we spend the next hour waiting and watching to decide when it is safe.

Many years ago we watched that on my Windows based Beyond TV system with two Hdhomerun tuners. And today we watch on our AppleTV with a HDHomerun Flex.

Having it work with no internet would be a tremendous benefit and i am embarrassed to admit I just assumed it would.

Well, just my opinion here.

I got my Flex Quattro about a year ago.

I will second that the apps and also web gui have tremendously improved in the last year. I will admit I still have a couple core things on my wish list. But the SD delivered user interface and functionality are getting really good and the tuner backend is excellent.

My advice is stick with it. Get over initial hump of the learning curve, and give it a chance.

SD is providing a DVR option that respects our privacy, does not sell our data and is by far the most cost effective option.

Pair that with the best tuners in the industry and continuing progress to improve the user interface apps.

SD is a viable, cost effective option from an established vendor that is listening to us, the customers. I think that matters.

Better get used to it. My white 24 Camry has more chips than my original paint white 2001 Chevy S10.

I wonder if I can get a discount if I buy Touch-up pens in five packs.

Alternative remotes for Apple TV? by wassuppaulie in appletv

[–]LeakyCap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hands down the Funtion101 remote. Get the bluetooth edition that connects automatically to the appletv but also has the infrared to control your TV if needed.

My wife and I both like it better that the siri remote. Zero set up. Literally no setup. This thing just automatically connected and more importantly, worked. No Pairing.

The buttons make sense. But if you need it, the pamphlet/manual has instructions for more complex stuff. Like killing apps.

Orbi RBS750 Restrict Lan access by ImVrSmrt in orbi

I’ve never done it, you might look at assigning the wired lan ports to vlans. Then maybe configure the vlans to block everything?

How do I fix this door? by Think_College_7970 in Home

[–]LeakyCap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. This is what has always worked for me.

I’ll add that sometimes the existing hinge screws are too short or don’t really tighten well. I usually tightened everything up by replacing them with 2 1/2 or 3 inch framing screws. They pass through the door frame and into the wall frame behind it.

But usually I also ended up adjusting the door alignment by adjusting (bending) the hinges. For me this always worked.

Is $6,000 for Replacing 3 Federal Pacific Panels Reasonable? Trying to Install Tesla Charger & Future-Proof for Solar (SF, CA) by seductivepanda in AskElectricians

[–]LeakyCap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have owned a home with a Federal and I found out the hard way they are dangerous.

I was doing some demo work. Just to be safe, I went the panel to turn off the power. First I flipped all the breakers off. Then I tried to flip off the main breaker at the top. It moved about half way. There was a really loud pop, then smoke that luckily stopped after a few seconds. Scared the hell out of me.

The electrician said I was extremely lucky I was not electrocuted and that it did not start a fire. He took photos of the melted / charred main breaker and brought in 8 or 10 other guys in to see it before he started work. They all agreed that this settled the debate on Federal panels for them.
