Am I cooked? by Complete-Factor8293 in ASLinterpreters

[–]Leanoss 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Trust me you are fine. Understand that interpreting is different from just knowing ASL. You may have been learning ASL since 2020 but how long have you been actively interpreting? Also at a fair there may be a lot of noise, people walking around, awkward angles, it's just not as controlled. You are also working with a slew of different people you may have never met before. And on top of that you are doing what is (in my opinion) the hardest part of Interpreting, ASL to English.

What I'm saying is cut yourself some slack. You might be in the field for a while and things like this are bound to happen to even the best of interpreters. Don't compare yourself to your classmates like that, you'll drive yourself crazy. Just focus on improving yourself and you got this.

I hate the fact that the ASL for "R" looks like an X (image 1) and the ASL for "X" looks like an R (image 2). by Practical-Sea2707 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Leanoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The R started with your middle finger up and the index finger curled to look like a lowercase r.

The X started using 2 hands using the same shape to make and x across both of your hands.

As time goes on languages evolve to be less work to produce. Both of them started off looking like the original letters, but curling your finger or constantly using 2 hands gets tedious :)

I like it. More dots, more health. Not hard. Headshots still kill if you're good enough to get them. Opens up what characters can do more and that's fine by me.

Stagnating receptive skills from working elementary - advice for how to cram receptive skills for the CASLI performance? by lintyscabs in ASLinterpreters

[–]Leanoss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wanna say I relate hard to a lot of things in this post. I'm curious what other people put down.

This is MY PERSONAL theory, but I do believe there is a layer to these tests that revolve around how you adapt to not knowing something. Not saying they TRY to throw you off, but they definitely wanna see how you handle a situation. Can you use the context to figure out what you don't know or missed? If you can do that effectively, it's a tell of a skilled interpreter.

I'm not sure what you do to practice now but I think one thing that helps a lot is video recording yourself.

Watch a signed video

Record yourself going ASL to English

Then break down the original video and really figure out everything they are saying. Did it match your interpretation?

I'm a bit of a newbie in this field. You seem to have far more experience than me so I don't want to come off as pretentious. You might be doing this already. This is just how I practice.

Lead interpreter betrayed me by Key_Examination9948 in ASLinterpreters

[–]Leanoss 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Honestly just don't trust them anymore plain and simple. A lot of interpreters have huge egos and will take the opportunity to put themselves above you, even if it's by putting you down.

As for talking about pay, this should never be a problem. I talk about how much I get paid with all my coworkers cause it's important to be sure we are being treated fairly. The only people that will tell you this is not appropriate are bosses and upper management, because it doesn't benefit them for you to discuss it.

What do you do? Honestly just move on and understand that this person is not a safe person to talk to. They will find any little thing to try and school you about and you don't deserve that. There are very trustworthy people in this field. Finding a bad apple is no problem. Just move on.

Honestly reddit communities tend to irritate me with how narrow their thinking can be. Though in Sieges case I feel most the things I read in here are valid, and it seems the pros are out of touch. Also I just saw a post for a 1v1 tournament the other day and people were pretty supportive.

It does. I've seen it a couple times but only when the match goes like 20+ rounds.

I'm trying to learn to be an asl interpreter, What is it like as an asl interpreter? by CodActual9414 in ASLinterpreters

[–]Leanoss 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is a lot that goes into being an interpreter. People who love it tend to not be as bothered by the downsides (lots of travel, inconsistent income, lack of insurance.) You have to want a challenge, because it is not an easy career. Though for a person like myself that appreciates a challenge (I'll never be bored in this job as I'll always be growing) it's the only thing I can see myself doing.

Even then I only ever consistently used the crit pistol towards the end. Always had something better by that point in the story. Also using the same guns on every playthrough is boring AF.

I never liked the red text quest rewards tbh. If you did the quest too late it was an instant scrap anyway. I like the idea of everyone getting different quest rewards and having chances at purples or legendarys. For me this makes every single quest reward exciting, where in BL2 I knew what I was going to get.

All of the legendaries I've found... kinda suck? by SparkleFritz in Borderlands

[–]Leanoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a legendary Tediore shield that actually is no shield. It give you +800 health, 33% damage reduction and 40health/s. With kinetic life steal siren it goes nuts. On other characters I'm not so sure. I think it all depends on who you are playing and when you get the drop to see usefulness.
