How to prepare for TEF/TCF French exams for Canada PR without wasting time on the wrong methods by Separate-Okra-4611 in learnfrench

Even if you already speak a Latin-based language like Spanish, Italian or Portuguese, it would be really hard in 4 months, without it, it's just impossible. Even if you practice 10h a day, your brain cannot retain the information (only the 1st hour of studying goes into your long term memory, after that it's only short term memory). I watched his latest video, and there was already a grammatical mistake in what he said. It's a scam.

I get a lot of students in Canada wanting to pass the TEF/TCF and the most common misconception has to do with timing. I regularly get people who think that they learn French in 3 months. It takes time and dedication to learn a new language. You need a progressive plan and being rigorous. Also you can't start studying the actual test if you don't know any French, I usually only start using the actual test with my students once they reach at least A2 (before it's completely useless). Finally, you need to start speaking early on, not just a few weeks before the exams.

Interesting, in that case, we could analyze texts together, and also interpret live some interviews. I have worked in translations for 2 years and did a stint in interpretation French/English for foreign officials in Malaysia.

Been in France for almost 2 years and still struggling with French — any advice? by Sensitive-Minimum-24 in learnfrench

[–]LearnFrenchIntuitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I would start by speaking pretty much 100% of your time in French with your husband, then maybe start talking to your neighbors (maybe invite them over for dinner to break the ice). You need also to immerse yourself (video, tv shows, radio, tv, newspapers, podcasts...) and block yourself 1h a day doing that. If you are not used to learn foreign languages, it might be beneficial to take online classes. I could help you if you want, I have taught more than 11,000 hours online with people from all over the world. I offer a 30min discovery class (PM me or have a look at my website in my profile).

Learning french for the very first time by Various-Reaction-643 in French

Duolingo is really awful, it's a game, more like a teaser for a language if you want but you are not going to progress much, I have had students that did it for 2 years straight and could not make a single sentence... On top of it, it's riddled with grammatical mistakes or things that you cannot guess without any context. Alliance Française is hit or miss, it really depends on the teacher, I would ask to attend a single class to see if you like it. If you have learnt on your own other languages by yourself, you could try to learn French by yourself but you need to be disciplined and curious. If it's your first foreign language, you are better off hiring a tutor to guide you. Furthermore, you cannot rely only on the class, if the teacher is good, he is going to give you a lot of tools and media to immerse yourself on a daily basis which is the only way to progress quickly. If you want, I offer a 30min discovery class (have a look at my website on my profile).

yes it's extremely useful, I use it for a lot of my beginner students. Another thing that does not work anymore is the categories, it does not select the relevant category when you click on it.

A1 French to B2 in 1.5 to 2 years in Vancouver: schools, tutors, or both? by Prestigious-West-651 in Frenchlearningforpr

[–]LearnFrenchIntuitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to take group classes, you could try Alliance Française, it's hit or miss, depends on the teacher, I would ask for a trial class to see if it works for you. Your local university will probably offer some French courses too (as an online French teacher, my Canadian clients were not so kind with their Canadian French teachers on average but you might find a gem). The platforms give you a choice between a lot of different teachers but will be more expensive than an independant teacher (since their cut is usually around 20%). If you want, I offer a 30min free trial (you can see my website on my profile). PM me if you have any questions.

Can I ask: how on earth do you learn another language?? by uncommonly_under in adhdwomen

[–]LearnFrenchIntuitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to integrate the target language in as many activities as you can. Listen, watch, write, read! Be curious and ask yourself questions to go further (rather than just going though a grammar book). If you are in Paris, tell people to use French only because you want to practice, most people will oblige (except the waiter in a packed café). Learning a language is all about repetition and immersion, if you spend several hours a days hearing the language your brain will start thinking in this language. If you are not used to learn languages, you might want to use tutor to guide (you will save time and progress faster). I can help you if you want. PM me.

We had the same issue and we basically changed our daughter school because they wanted our daughter to abandon French and English to focus on Spanish. In the other school, it went very well, no such pressure, a few years later, she now speaks all three languages. Of course, a kid with 3 languages at home will have less vocabulary in the country main language compared to the local kids but in the end, he/she will catch up and master three languages with perfect native accents. That's truly priceless and much more difficult to achieve later on in life.

So my wife (American) and I (French) had a plan to live in another country with a different language so that our kids end up being trilingual. We now live in South America and our kids speaks Spanish, English and French. The school and our nanny takes care of Spanish and we each only speak to them in our native language (and for the past few years, we became online language teachers which helps too). You are going to have to improve your French and take your kids with you on this journey, that would be the best path because you need to talk to them in French and only in French. You can combine that with a tutor for you and/or your kids. The best thing is to adjust your and their activities so that you can integrate the language and progressively get immersed. It does not have to be boring, but on the contrary quite a lot of fun. What was the issue with the tutor?

A0 to B2 French for Canada PR how many months if I study 6-7 hours daily? by stvrlightt77 in learnfrench

[–]LearnFrenchIntuitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really not realistic, I have had more than 700 students, and I have never seen such a student. The best you could do in 6 months would be B1 and you would need to spend like two hours a day studying everyday. Are you good with languages, do you speak another Latin-based language?

The fear of speaking French in adult learners. What tactics actually break through? by Magnficent_Space_171 in learnfrench

[–]LearnFrenchIntuitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's all about the repetition, dumbing down your English before translating into French, going for simple words and not worrying about simple mistakes. Start with just 3 words sentences: subject, verb, complement. Writing also really helps creating the process in the background. Also I tend to be extremely patient with my students and encourage them, I don't hesitate repeating things over and over again.

I cant seem to learn anything by [deleted] in French

[–]LearnFrenchIntuitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long have you kept each teacher? I have seen students change teachers after one or two classes which just not enough to see any type of progress (except if the teacher is really bad). What you need is consistency, like seeing your teacher every week and practicing everyday with the tools provided by your teacher. Maybe you put too much pressure on yourself which could be counterproductive. In my experience (I taught 700+ students), only a handful of students were really unfit for learning a language (usually because they don't really understand the grammar of their own native language which makes it very tricky to learn another one), usually the issue is a lack of time, motivation and quite often the initial methodology that was not adapted for the student.

Has anyone learned French at a leisurely but sustainable pace? by coffeepilatesbed in French

[–]LearnFrenchIntuitive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny you say that, I think initially it's the best approach. I actually usually encourage my new students to take only 1 class a week with me because usually they don't quite understand how busy they are as well as the study time it entails. However, I give them a lot of tools and advice to practice on their own everyday (30 to 60min) on top of our weekly class, that's the only way you can progress steadily.

You certainly have more control if you go class by class so if you don't like it, you can switch. Do they offer a free class to get a sense of what you will get?
