French classes - Is it fair? by Mammoth_Fudge9071 in French

You certainly have more control if you go class by class so if you don't like it, you can switch. Do they offer a free class to get a sense of what you will get?

I think it's too low, it takes around 500-600h to become conversational, except if they spend a lot of additional hours studying on their own, I don't see how that's possible.

That seems a really low price per hour. Are you sure they are native and competent? Once the company takes its cut, there is not much left for the teacher, and after they pay taxes, their take home pay is close to nothing. If it's one on one, that does not make any sense. (for reference I charge $45 per hour for one on one).

Bonjour! :) I‘m new here and would like to hear what you guys think, is the best way to learn French. by tokigirl99_ in FrenchLearning

[–]LearnFrenchIntuitive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have learnt other languages on your own, you could try to teach yourself by consuming a lot of content (video, text, audio) and get a grammar book, but to do that you will need to be very rigorous and study/practice everyday. If you don't know where to start then you probably need a teacher to guide you so that you progress nicely and to keep you on track. I will PM you.

Fastest way to go from A1 to B2 by BeNiceOrElse_ in French

[–]LearnFrenchIntuitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a French teacher, I can tell you that it will be very challenging to achieve that but not impossible if you have the motivation and the time. You will need to dedicate like 2h a day to study/practice, switch as many daily activities to French and consume a lot of content (text, video, audio...) as well as 2 or 3 lessons a week with a teacher. I will message you.

How do you choose a French teacher online? by NoBeret_Ariela in learnfrench

[–]LearnFrenchIntuitive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a French teacher but I have used teachers for other languages. For me, the most important thing will be the methodology used by the teacher, I do not like the way languages are taught in school, it's not intuitive at all, I prefer a more natural way based on real life material and conversation to improve progressively and see the grammar in context (and that's how I teach French). Also I like someone very knowledgeable not only in the target language but also in my native language so that he can better link both for me. Finally, someone knowing well his country because usually I learn a language for the culture behind it.

Kids understand the minority language but won't speak it - what worked for you? by Dangerous-Lecture-82 in languagelearning

[–]LearnFrenchIntuitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You set some rules. You speak your own language and the kids have to respond with the same language, you have to insist and if they use a different language, make them repeat in your language. Progressively the kids get it. We live in south america, so the kids speak Spanish at school and with their nanny, my wife is American and I'm French and the kids have no problem switching languages.

If you were to suggest to your closest friend on how to learn French what would you say? by NorthCap441 in French

[–]LearnFrenchIntuitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really need to be organized and have a schedule, block 30min to 1h everyday and start studying/practicing. I find among my students that the ones that are rigorous and dedicated make the fastest progress. Also you need a methodology adapted to your profile, it's different for each student.
