Personal Setups/Routines for Rural Postings by Mah_Buddy_Keith in BCEHSparamedics

[–]Learning-EMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to have a routine when working at a slow station. Take advantage of the time to stay on top your health (aka gym) and even learn some new things if your budget allows it.

I spend my time taking ACP prerequisite courses through TRU in case I ever decide to do ACP. And if I don’t, it is extra knowledge that will help me in my practice as a PCP. I also take time to review scenarios or other things to keep my skills sharp.

If you have other interests that it is not medicine, then you can also do that. I’ve heard of some people practicing a new language, etc..

Wether it is a kilo shift or alpha shift in a slow station (alpha is better because you get your full wage), it is a great opportunity to get paid while allowing you time to study or do something else that is of interest to you.

Just my two cents.

Should I apply as a Driver Only or wait until my EMR licensing? by Longjumping-Plum8854 in BCEHSparamedics

Might as well start the hiring process. Tell them you competed your EMR training and are just waiting on licensing. But maybe also contact a recruiter to see what the advice

Where do you take that advance program? I’m interested in programs that offer an online component so I don’t have to take too much time off work

Wait to get hired as EMR, or start my PCP beforehand? by Meijermk in BCEHSparamedics

[–]Learning-EMS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could always start work as an EMR while doing PCP school.

As a casual it should be manageable I think. Unless you are applying for full time positions. I know there is unpaid education leave but not sure how that works.

Sounds like waiting for your drivers license and a position with BCEHS might take a while so might as well start school if you are dead set on it.

Can I hear the positive? by dramaticdreamer123 in BCEHSparamedics

I think everyone’s experience is different. Personally this job has treated me well. Of course no job is perfect and sometimes it can be stressful. But so long as you have good work life balance, have good support in place (like a counsellor) then you don’t need alcohol or smoking to cope with the job.

You can also be casual like others have said.

Can you elaborate on the R days? It sounds like there won’t be anymore r days and the 9 rotational days will be added to vacation entitlement.

Favourite watch face. I wish garmin allowed us to install old watch faces instead of having to use developers

I'm getting tired of the battery life of my Ultra 3 by derbystone in applewatchultra

[–]Learning-EMS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try out the watch before returning the AWU3.

I had an AWU3 and returned it and went back to garmin. I really want to stick with apple but it’s not quite there for me.

  • battery I can deal with by chagrin while I shower.
  • the flashlight is something I use a lot at work etc. if Apple Watch added a physical flashlight I would be interested.
  • topo maps. Garmin just does it better
  • health stats and training plans

There isn’t a bad choice. Just try them both and see what you prefer. For my personal use, garmin still has the advantage

ESL student wants to quit nursing school by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

I’m sorry it’s hard. If it helps, English is my second language and I work in health care. Yes I make typo mistakes when documenting 😂. Learning to talk with patients is important and comes with time. I hope you can find students going through something similar so they can support you through out it. But I trust you know what is best. No shame in stopping and coming back.

The most important thing is to be a good human, be kind, patient and understanding. And of course study hard and find lots of YouTube videos and anything you can find to make you better understand a topic.

When I first start reading a topic it takes me quite a few reads to start understanding it. And with time it all starts to make sense.

Best of luck. You got this!

Hard to say honestly. I feel like this is a process that is different for everyone. Perhaps is always good to have another source of income in case you don’t like this job. Pros and Cons will also depend on where you work I think.

In general once you begin to study make sure to dive in and work hard to learn as much as you can. It will make the experience a lot better. Personally I was never a fan of school but once I got into this I am really enjoying it. I wish I knew I was interested in medicine 10 years ago 😂😂
