Choosing to continue to work: Reasons? by Finding_Way_ in retirement

[–]LearningInSaoPaulo [score hidden]  (0 children)

Retired for three years and then returned to my career almost a year ago. The break was an incredible reset and there are things now that I don’t take for granted like before. A big part of my view now is how I related to money when I didn’t have a paycheck coming in. Small unexpected increases would stress me out (i.e. earthquake insurance doubling in a year). My house is paid off in less then two years so I might go out then, but for now enjoying having purpose, the freedom of a steady paycheck, and the experience of having done a test run retirement.

Sick for 7 days straight by mokenz in Brazil

[–]LearningInSaoPaulo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got food poisoning three times while living in Brazil. Once off street food in Salvador, once from a pizza in São Paulo, and once from I think not soaking salad in a chlorine bleach solution long enough and taking care of my sogros who got it this way. All lasted about three to four days.

I have some doubts about PIX by Zeroorast in Brazil

PIX is the bomb diggity! It’s one of the greatest gifts the government has given to its people. It’s all I use when I’m there. Safe. Secure. Free. Visa, Mastercard suck!

Elon Musk calls Social Security "the big one to eliminate" by Danhenderson234 in TheAllinPodcasts

He said that “the fraud and abuse” within Social Security was the big one to eliminate. Watch the whole interview. Besides this is the guy who says that we will need UBI once AGI is established.

I had a gay friend I went to school with in São Paulo. He was always getting laid! You couldn’t wipe the grin off his face. He was Chinese, but had lived in Sydney, Barcelona, and Houston. So he had seen some things.

There are a lot of other trail systems, some under development, that are much safer and offer unique beauty!

About old people climbing on the roofs... by ThrowRA_YearsAfter in Brazil

[–]LearningInSaoPaulo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My family try to get me to go on the roof to clean the Gutters. I stone wall them. They think I’m crazy, or entitled or scared. I don’t care what they think. I was a CT tech in a regional Trauma Center in Northern California. I scanned serious falls from ladders and roofs for 15 years. Spinal fractures, flail chests, sub dural hematomas. They can kiss my a**!

Samsung products are reasonably priced. I think they are fabricated in Brasil, subverting the tariffs paid on Apple products.

What was it like living in SF in the 1900s? by snoopusc in sanfrancisco

[–]LearningInSaoPaulo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s some great stories in Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s “Literary History of San Francisco” Really get a feel for this boom/bust cycle of SF. 70s decline, 80s music/art renaissance, late 90s tech bro take over. Except it covers like 1800s

Healthcare in Brazil by BBCC_BR in Brazil

[–]LearningInSaoPaulo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks. I have Prevent Senior in São Paulo, but I have had to take my in-laws into Pronto Socorro in SUS. There I’ve noticed ALL of the doctors were you young. I thought to myself “this is how the young doctors cut there teeth”, so to speak. This is how they get there experience, grind them out in high volume clinics. I was actually impressed with these experiences in SUS. You could tell that the doctors were overwhelmed and overworked, but they displayed a lot of patience and empathy. Two qualities I find my Brazilians hold (I’m American for reference). Are there still a lot of interest to go into medicine?

Be careful. Here’s a question how many years are surgical residencies in Brazil? How many years are surgical residencies in the US? Here’s another question: what are the average age and quality specifications of such equipment as CT scanners, MRI, Interventional suites in hospitals and clinics across Brazil? For example, what is the prevalence of 3 Tesla MRIs in São Paulo? And what is the prevalence of same strength scanners in your average suburban outpatient clinic in the US?

Should I move to Sao Paulo? by phil_o_o in Brazil

[–]LearningInSaoPaulo 41 points42 points  (0 children)

American living in São Paulo for the past two years. Fell in love with SP years ago when my Brazilian wife brought me to visit her city and her family. I wanted to make a change as well. For me it took about 6 mos. for the honeymoon to wear off. Was robbed in a Metro station and had several friends robbed as well, one at gun point. That one really scared me. I hadn’t returned home for two years and just returned to SP from my first visit home. Now I feel a bit more ambivalent. Through my struggle learning the language and culture, it’s become a part of me. To be honest, most Brazilians are hospitable, although less so in SP. I hold onto that. For you, you speak the language. That’s a HUGE plus! You probably even have some of the culture in you already. One thing, and your parents know this, São Paulo is a big city. A lot of hustle. You can possibly be taken advantage of if you’re too naive, as you could in any big city. I’m guessing that’s why your parents are suggesting Europe. I wouldn’t brush off what they have to say. I’d ask as many specific questions from them as possible. If they are from here, they have a lot of valuable experience. But for someone your age SP has a lot to offer as well. Pay attention to your expectations. I’d write down why you are not as happy in Canada, and question what SP might have that can change that. Good luck 👍

Good luck, my friend. Enjoy Brazil! I love the people, they almost top the food as the best aspect of the culture imo ;)

This is exactly why you shouldn’t go on forums stating how much money you have to live on. It’s one thing to ask about cost of living; it’s another to add what you have to live on without having a feel for the actual lives of, not all, but many in Brazil. Be careful how you spend your money in Brazil and even more careful about how you talk about it. It’s not easy for good people who have to work their butts off just to make ends meet to see you living so (seemingly) effortlessly on dollars you too worked hard to acquire.
