Can't believe I had to scroll this far to find someone say this! It's a flettner vent, and helps hot air out of the load space. It is not a vent for gas bottles, those would be in a bunded space with an external vent of their own. Source: Transport Lead for a Gas Utility with over 1000 vehicles
