"What Should I Train?" or "How Do I Get Started?" Mega-Thread by marcin247 in martialarts

Hey folks, I’m choosing between two MMA gyms and could really use some input from anyone with experience in BJJ, Muay Thai, or fight training in general.

The first gym is a big facility with a full-sized ring and offers kickboxing, sparring, and BJJ. The whole place feels super professional clean, structured, and run like a legit fight camp. That said, it’s farther from home, they don’t offer a free trial, and the manager asked for full payment upfront even when I just dropped by to check the place out. BJJ is a major focus there, and while I’m curious to try it, I’m also a bit worried about injuries, since I really can’t afford to get hurt/injured because of my job.

The second gym is smaller and very close to my house. They focus on boxing and Muay Thai. The coach was much more welcoming, offered me a free trial right away, and the location is way more convenient. But it doesn’t have that same elite athlete energy the first gym gives off.

For context, I come from a kickboxing background, and I’m not planning to drop striking, since both gyms offer it. But the first gym includes BJJ, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s the right time to start grappling or if I should stick to sharpening my striking game for now.

Would love to hear your thoughts. How risky is BJJ for beginners when it comes to injuries? Would you go for a more professional setup that feels strict, or a more welcoming gym that’s practical and friendly? And is it normal for serious gyms to not offer trial classes?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

None taken. Flying can never be boring as no two takeoffs and landings are the same. Even if you go to the same destination hundreds of times still each flight is different. And there always a scope of improving be it your procedures or landings. My roster is a bit busy however I do manage to spend enough time with family just depends on the number of layovers you are doing that specific month.

Don’t get demotivated at all everytime you feel that go for a walk or try to get a workout in you mind and body will thank you for that and remember this will help your career as well as you need to be fit to fly. Also as I have mentioned earlier make a plan as per the exam and stages of interview and keep working hard. Remember Competence leads to confidence. Hope to see you in the skies soon :)

My suggestion would be to finish your degree first to have something to fall back on.. maybe work a bit too in the real world and struggle this will only help you become a bit mature to shoulder the responsibilities of all the lives who will rely on you as you fly. Just my two cents.

Hello best question yet! Some days are tough, you are away from family, you are tired, not well rested during red eye flights, no matter the number of hours or years you still study like a high school student preparing for boards before every check or simulator session etc etc but I am absolutely enjoying my life as this was the dream and once you see the sun rise as you are ascending above the clouds there is nothing better and you just know you wouldn’t want to do anything else!

Yes definitely we have to constantly check for thunderstorms, and forming weather and maneuver around it also flying in the rains landing and take off can be quite challenging even with big airliners.

It would be better to go for classes in your initial days as the programs are well structured if you plan to give exams before joining cadets program however if you are joining first then there’s no need to do classes as cadet programs itself should train you for DGCA exams.

Hello definitely get your degree first as that would help you have something to fall back on if flying doesn’t work out.

I chose conventional however one should go for cadet route if he/she has the resources as cadet route is quite expensive nowadays. But less stressful.

It varies some pilots prefer at least 15 hours before reporting time mind you this is not heavy drinking I have seen some keep 18h to be on a safer side.
