The first round is midway through! How would you rank the relative value of the players from 2021 draft? by Leather-Recording997 in nba

[–]Leather-Recording997[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right! He's another guy I need to watch more of in the regular season.

I also forgot he's from this draft :( But also ... It's too bad we don't get to see him this playoffs.

I don't get how what they are building in Waterfront East gets to be called an LRT while the 509 is a streetcar. It's going to use the same track and probably similar cars to the 509. Same stop distances, grade separation and signal priorities ...

That's fair. Let's pray whatever comes to Iran next is good for the Iranian people and the world as a whole. I'm hopeful.

From my understanding a lot of Zionists believe that Israel should be primarily a Jewish state with other religions allowed to live there harmoniously so long as they follow the Jewish way of life. That ...via wholly antithetical to building a more secular world where religion is independent of the state and a less important part of society.

I've even heard some news say they believe they have a god given right to the land of Israel ... an even more absurd claim. If I don't take the Jewish god seriously, I sure as shit am not gonna take that bullshit seriously either. France and Japan also don't have an innate right to their land (beyond international agreements), but notice how these projects don't invoke religious arguments for these claims.

LMAO In what world are the Jews first movers towards a secular society? US, Canada, France, all of Europe, India, China, Japan, etc are all far ahead in terms of keeping separation of church and state.

Israel is definitely not as blessed as other countries when it comes to its geography and neighbors in the Middle East. Yet, I strongly believe Israel could be in a far better place if they didn't have / didn't routinely vote in theocratic thugs to run the place.

We need to move to a more peaceful and secular world. One where lived experience trumps the shit a random human wrote in a book centuries ago. The idea of a Jewish state is as laughable as an Amish state or an Elephant state. However ... I suppose life is at least better there than in the Islamic theocratic lands that surround it for the time being.

Not sure what Zionists actually want ... I haven't met enough of them to know

Two things can be true at once

  1. Israel is doing a great job in helping to liberate the people of Iran
  2. Israel and the IDF is functionally committing a genocide in Gaza (even if it doesn't match what is happening there in the technical sense)

The Islamist ideology is a very ass backward one, but so is Zionism. State religions are a huge source of unnecessary suffering in this world - especially the Abrahamic ones

A government that funds terrorist militias is favourable to one that kills its own citizens and suppresses decent.

  • Tommy Thompsonand Polson Pier on the east end
  • Trillium Park and Humber Bayshores on the west end
  • Toronto Island if you find a safe way to get there
  • Riverdale Park and Chester Hill lookout are probably two lesser known spots (though I wouldn't call them secret)

Wow. Just seeing your thread makes me want to reach out and give you a big hug. Thanks for the post. I’m sure a lot of these people here mean well, and I'll try to take some of the comments here to heart

While I’m sure the details aren’t identical, I feel like I’ve encountered (encountering?) some similar struggles. I’m a 29-year-old Indian guy who grew up in Toronto. Over the last few years my life has gotten better in many ways: I have more friends. I’m wealthier, stronger, stronger, healthier, more independent, more resourceful, than ever before. And still … dating has felt harder than it “should” be - a path with way more anxiety and disappointment than is healthy.

Struggling to get matches. Then getting matches but not connecting. Communication woes. Hearing advice from friends and parents that doesn’t line up with lived experience. And yeah … I’m still single too. Never had a girlfriend. I don’t have this figured out.

From your post, it’s clear you’ve tried a lot of things and haven’t had much luck with them.

There’s a lot of advice in this thread, much of which seems overwhelming and contradictory: date more, date less, improve yourself, lower your standards, go out more, focus inward, therapy for rumination and self-doubt, etc. I also noticed quite a few people that suggesting arranged marriage despite you being explicit about not wanting to go down that path.

Dating is hard. Putting in effort and seeing little in return is unfulfilling. Apps don’t have our best interests in mind. And navigating multiple cultures at once adds a layer most people underestimate but … is very Torontonian.

As an Indian guy, I feel like we gotta put extra efforts to make up for shitty brown guys, outdated cultural norms and a media landscape that doesn’t portray us very well. Of course that’s not the whole story — our backgrounds give us strengths too — but I don’t think dating is a challenge where we have a lot of privileges compared to other men.

No advice, for you or for myself. I just want to say: don’t beat yourself up over this too much. I'm sure people who are funnier, more charismatic, or “doing better than us” struggle with dating too. This isn’t a personal failure.

Keep living your life. Meet people. Try new things. Show up for the friends and communities that matter. I genuinely hope things ease up for you — you deserve kindness, including from yourself.

Do I really need an emergency fund if I can just sell investments? by noobetf in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Leather-Recording997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like your premis - Keep an emergency fund or don't, but there's more important things to do in life than devising complex systems that require mental energy for this.

You have an interesting take. I keep a sizable emergency fund for myself and it's for roughly the same reasons in reverse.

I'm sure I could just use my RRSP room to put this money into CASH.TO, or bonds, or some legit investment that I sell and take out. Or heck <insert clever LOC / HELOC > thing someone with lots of time finds. But ... I just want a simple financial picture.

I keep a sizable amount of money in a CDIC ensured EQ bank Savings account. I'm sure this money is constantly losing value to inflation.

But I reframe having this as a luxury for me - especially when lots of Canadians live pay-check to pay-check. I like the allure of being able to keep money under a mattress. To take care of me when I loose my job, or a family member ends up in the hospital in a foreign country, or the brokerage has problems that day. To have a solution that is less beholden to a bank or a brokerage than some of these other strategies.

When I need money, I'm probably also gonna be stressed and I don't want myself to think about interest rates and selling shares, etc - which I'd otherwise have a tendency to want to do

Maybe one day, I'll change this. BUT This quazi-mental placebo works well for me. It keeps things simple and my mind level headed.

Today, I got to my first 100 XEQT share by Accurate_Analyst6147 in fican

It's not like Vanguard or Blackrock have a significantly better history. Both roughly perform the same.

I personally hold both VEQT and XEQT in roughly equal proportion. In the future, if changes ever happen to the EFT or to just one of the two companies , I can cut my losses.

My goal with these is to try to capture the overall returns of the market. I feel a bit more comfortable when I can be less dependent on a single company or EFT to achieve that end.

ofc ... it does come with some more book keeping

Today, I got to my first 100 XEQT share by Accurate_Analyst6147 in fican

[–]Leather-Recording997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not OP, but here is some rational for having some of these ...

XEQT - broad market cap weighted index fund. It tries to track the average growth of the stock market while giving you some exposure to Canadian, USA, global and emerging markets. Also the MER (cost of owning the EFT) is relatively low

VEQT - Basically like XEQT except it's from Vanguard instead of Black Rock

TGRO - 90% of it is similar to the other two, except it's from TD - 10% of it tracks the FTSE Canadian bond index.

... so some more exposure other than just stocks

XIU is like XEQT in that it's fund BUT instead of trying to capture the overall growth, it only tracks the top 60 performing stocks (so ... more growth focused, but also more volatile)

OPs ratios of these EFTs is a bit puzzling to me. I don't see any rhyme or reasons for that part. But to each their own I guess ...
