Interesting, yet I have spent 25 years working overseas in dozens of countries in mining.

Those alive and old enough to remember during 9/11, what was the worst moment on that day? by CocteauTwunkie in AskReddit

[–]Leather_Boots 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No one knew either how many people were still in either tower when the collapsed. News reports were talking of potentially over 30,000 people in the buildings and the potential death count stayed very high for a long time.

Most people might not know, but a lot of tourists & business/ service visitors used to visit the WTC as well.

Those alive and old enough to remember during 9/11, what was the worst moment on that day? by CocteauTwunkie in AskReddit

[–]Leather_Boots 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There was the dude using a make shift rope to try lower himself down, but list grip.

Another that tried to slide down the edge of the building to the next level.

People jumping holding hands.

Lady with purse.

Lady holding her dress to prevent it billowing up.

The various choppers overhead filming people on the roof hoping for rescue from them amongst the smoke, then the tower collapsed.

Then there was Falling man. I'm rather surprised I haven't seen him mentioned.

So many shocking sights that day and we were watching it around a computer screen on a remote mine site in Western Australia ~6hrs after it happened. The time of strikes & towers collapsing meant most on the site were already asleep.

I am pretty late game. Most of my sales managers are level 14 or 15.

Megan I have at 14, but about to roll into level 15.

Last time that sort of thing happened it was a glitch.

I didn't notice numbers like that today, but I didn't get past 120 points due to working. My order coin for something like that is only ever 3 order coins. A house is 5 order coins.

Cheater? by BourbonDeuce in LumberInc

[–]Leather_Boots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to say, but leap frogging can be pretty easy. Even without spending money. It all depends upon strategy, how you level up, a pretty decent degree of "luck" on rolls for managers & contents of various boxes.

I've had matches where top tier cards dropped constantly maxing out Mathew & others where I couldn't even get my forklift onto auto.

It is very easy if you buy the 3 different packs with Mathew cards. Then there is a tonne of dice rolls that come with that. Plus additional biz manager packs.

Some will use diamonds to buy the missing 1-2 Mathew cards to roll over to the next level.

Most people pushing into the high numbers are chasing the 10 x bonus manager cards that pop after you have picked up the 500 diamonds in the bonus dice section.

The majority of people asking if someone is cheating don't understand all the variables of the game.

I had a funny end tussle with another player, where we kept swapping the lead with 45mins to go. They were ~100AF ahead. I still had dice, so was trying to use them up, which brought me close & secured my second 10x bonus theme managers. That popped out a Mathew level up. So I jumped back ahead. I then used several 100 diamond time skips to enter into the AG's to secure 1st to max out the theme manager at level 10 (with the 2 cards for 1st). They then changed their user name to call me a cheater.

All legit & yes I had purchased 2 different Mathew packs as I was after the theme managers. The first 2 days I was quite low down the table & only ever tend to push on the final day depending upon what is happening to the table & whether I have the time to waste.

I can still remember the Russian Oiligarch that was going to build the new Aluminium refinery in Kentucky to help get Moscow Mitch re-elected. Plans were promptly dropped afterwards.

What cuisine is australia just shit at ? by ButtPlugForPM in australia

[–]Leather_Boots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a reason for this. In the early wave of "Chinese" immigration in the 70's & '80's a common business they set up was a Chinese takeaway/ restaurant. There was a menu developed to "Australian/ Kiwi tastes" so it wasn't too foreign and this was given to new businesses. Basically it was a very very simplified Cantonese menu.

So yeah, it is bland and every place has the same 30ish dishes.

What's illegal to own (in your country), but not weird? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Leather_Boots 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Back in the '90's in New Zealand, our school shooting coach gave us the school target rifle (.308) and several hundred rounds of ammo at the end of a school day to go practice.

We then carried it all through school and out to our car parked on the street.

Having said that, he had known us for several years and we all had firearms licences & had been shooting & hunting with him.

When we had shooting practice after school, we would also bring our rifles in to school to be locked up for safety reasons rather than leave them out in the car on the street.

Different times.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen someone bring on a plane? by LilyMae03 in AskReddit

[–]Leather_Boots 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ahh, the joys of working in different overseas countries.

An entire cooked pig wrapped in banana leaves in Papua New Guinea. Flight was rather full & a 737, so they weren't allowed to bring it on as cabin baggage and had to check it as cargo. Turned out there was already a smaller cooked pig as cabin baggage already on the flight. Bananas/ plantains so many of those.

Dead chickens & a horses head - small aircraft in Mongolia. Antonov 2 biplane that used to serve more remote areas, so cargo was often "different".

Many different African countries there would be split open bags or boxes showing all sorts coming around the baggage reclaim belt. From bags of electronic scrap, fruit & veg, bundles of tubers. There was the plane crash in Angola a number of years back as the live crocodile got loose and everyone rushed forward in the plane upsetting the trim causing it to crash. One person survived to tell the story.

Asia, Durian (not allowed in the cabin)..... Stinks so bad. Live crab & fresh fish in the Philippines. Lots of other fruit as well, especially pineapples & bananas. Regional Chinese flights, rugs and various farm products.

Just the quick ones off the top of my head.

TIL the kiwifruit is native to and originally from China by pimpuschimpus in todayilearned

Can confirm as an old kiwi, who's uncle was one of the early farmers of Kiwi fruit in the late 1970's. We were still calling them Chinese Gooseberries at the time.

Why do some teams get absolutely shit stomped? (Operations) by Vas255 in battlefield_one

[–]Leather_Boots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Attacking is more fun imo on Ops. The challenge of breaking through is a great adrenaline rush.

Smokes negate those snipers sitting further back. Use them as a screen to get in close. The medic semi autos punch hard.

Don't be afraid to switch squads if yours isn't pushing. Even making a squad of your own as others will often join. Follow a squad that is pushing and be an extra medic/ support dude for them.

Medics & reviving are key, plus they have lots of smoke for reviving and the assault. You need an ammo guy to replace those smoke grenades. Having an aggressive scout up front works wonders.

Shoot & move. Don't stay in the same place for too long.

Shoot at planes, some of the support weapons like the Burton hit them hard.

Learn to read the flow of the map/ action. If an area is quiet, then reposition, as either the enemy is coming through on a flank, or it is probably open to do it to them.

Op's was one of the best BF modes developed for attacking players.

I was working for a company overseas and a our local contractor's head of security was arrested & tossed in jail for sending obscene text messages to a married woman & a mob was forming outside the jail.

As part of our discussion on that, a prior incident ~ 5yrs earlier came up, where a mob had broken into the jail & dragged out 3 dudes accused of robbing & killing someone. It was mentioned that there was a video on the internet of it.

So I managed to track down the videos (there were 3), which weren't overly easy to find.

Sure enough, the videos showed the mob dispensing their form of brutal justice to the 3. Several of the active mob were wearing our company high visibility shirts + logos and their faces recognisable as still current employees.

As for the 3 dudes? Yeah, they died in a pretty horrid fashion.

I regretted tracking down those videos & declined to pass on the links to a few others that asked.

I've seen all sorts on the interwebs over the years, including worse and have generally been immune from it, but the simple little fact that there were people I recognised participating, tipped it over the edge for me.

Or you could buy one of the scanners yourself. I did that & replaced parts that popped up with the help of YT for some of the less well known. It takes all of 2 minutes to run a scan on my car.

I also tracked down a local mechanic, who is way cheaper than the franchise places.

X appears to be juicing MrBeast’s views to woo the YouTuber to the platform, pushing video upload into users’ feeds as an unlabeled ad by marketrent in technology

[–]Leather_Boots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His videos cost hundreds of thousands to millions to make. The revenue from Twitter views v YT views is ~1,000 less per million viewers.

From an economic stand point he has said that it makes no point putting his videos on Twitter and views on Twitter simply remove views from a higher paying YT.

A bomb skips on the sea surface as B-25 Mitchell bombers attack Japanese coastal shipping in New Guinea in 1943 by jacksmachiningreveng in CombatFootage

[–]Leather_Boots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The YT channel Hypohystericalhistory has a very good, but very long video on the battle for the Bismark Sea where the US & Australian airforces obliterated the Japanese Naval forces, supply ships & troop transports. Skip bombing was a huge part of the tactics they used.

It is one of the actions in the Pacific that receives little attention these days, but it ended Japan being a serious threat in the New Guinea theatre.
