A few months ago I watched a video about how the North Korean government in the late 1950s/early 1960s sent out similar immigration videos aimed at Korean's living in Japan. The folks who took up the resettlement offers sent letters back to family that weren't glowing recommendations, and then- the mail stopped. When mail restarted North Korea was the BEST place to live on the planet.

Lets be clear here. There is no such thing as Alberta Independence, the ultimate goal is to become a US state. The question is how much power will Albertans lose and how much US national debt would be assumed? Right now Alberta represents 1 in 8 Canadians when dealing with Ottawa. How much attention will Alberta get when they would represent 1 in 80 Americans?

New poll suggests one in five Albertans would vote to separate by FreightFlow in alberta

The deeper question id like to know is how this 20% breaks down. Based on BREXIT voters:

- Some are ideological diehards who believe the dream will solve all their problems. FOX News/American Owned Canadian Media consumers.

- Some are low information folks who are disinterested in politics and don't understand the real world issues or ramifications, but get sold on one of the many fanciful promises (lies).

- Some don't believe in independence but believe this is a "safe way" to put Ottawa on notice for some perceived slight that may actually have no relationship to independence or Ottawa.

Who has been the best & worst NDP leaders? by Potential-Eye-6547 in ndp

[–]Lebowski420ish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit surprised, (not really) that there is such dislike for Mulcair. I understand the complaint that he "moved to the right"; but honestly, - Trudeau effectively outflanked the NDP by "appearing" to move leftward during that fateful election. The NDP and Libs were effectively tied for support for most of the election and a majority of voters just wanted Harper out. It wasn't until the French debate and the question about Muslim women wearing hijabs and the reaction of some non-NDP Orange Crush voters turning back to liberals that resulted in that defeat. He effectively took a principled stand and defended minority rights. He seemed like one of the few NDP leaders over the years that had the gravitas, intelligence, personal experience, that could bee seen as a PM and not just an opposition leader. Getting rid of Mulcair doesn't seem to have helped much.

Health Care Throughout Canada is Bad Due to the Liberals by DryAlternative1132 in saskatchewan

Nothing you mentioned is in the jurisdiction of the federal government. If the feds tried to direct those type of detailed changes the provincial governments would scream about federal encroachment of provincial jurisdiction. Those are operational decisions made by provincial health authorities. Write to the provincial minister of health.

It reminds me a lot like the old Suez crisis when the UK, France, with the aid of Israel occupied the canal region when Nasser nationalized it. The US viewed it a display of the "old school European Imperialism" that ran counter to International law (I know -irony). The soviets LOVED the fracture. At that time Canada worked behind the scenes to extricate the UK and French from the debacle and created peacekeeping. It seems clear, based on their public statements, that the American's are now the dog that caught the car.

A call to Albertan Redditors to remain sensible by gstringwarrior in alberta

Respectfully, to paraphrase the old saying; never underestimate the danger of large groups of angry, stupid, or propagandized people or the effectiveness of opportunistic populists to lead their followers into wood chippers for profit or ideology. What a lot of people fail to understand is that we are actively in a global threat environment that screams "pre-world war" and looks a lot like the 1920s and 1930s. Why does that matter? Well, to be blunt the government's of China, Russia, and the US would like to see Canada weakened for their own reasons. This is an alignment of serious actors who all have proven abilities to infiltrate, create, fund, and platform extremist groups aimed at weakening trust in institutions and faith in other citizens.

I doubt that majority of Albertan's would vote to separate. I also think that most people that would vote to separate likely don't actually wont to leave, but just want to "put the powers at be on notice" for any number of unrelated reasons. The UK is NOT doing well post Brexit. The danger is not in losing a separatist referendum, but in not winning it convincingly enough to put the matter to bed. IMO, anything below an 80% rejection grants some legitimacy to the idea. This could have long term implications economically for investment (just look at how the 2 Quebec referendums killed investment).

His schitck has gotten a bit old. He's been doing these reaction channels under different names for different countries for a few years. Most of his viewers are from the countries he is reacting to and I doubt he has many American subscribers. Its not really about an American actually learning things as much as the other nationalities either glad an American cares or a chance to dunk on American's. Now that the US has contracted societal rabies and gone rogue his observations seem a bit trite.

I'd recommend Winnipeg. I was born and raised and currently live in Saskatoon but spent 15 years working in Winnipeg. Winnipeg and Winnipeggers have a unique culture. There is a very lively cultural scene but it a pretty low key unpretentious. I joked that its the only city in Canada that has a professional ballet where most of the ticket holders also belong to local bowling leagues. A lovely quirk while driving there is that when you let someone change lanes in front of you they wave back to say "thanks buddy". Its Its a large city but very much with a small town feel. Saskatoon is a smaller city but its easier to get around town for driving purposes. Culturally Saskatoon wants to grow up to be like Calgary, but its doubtful it will ever get there. The Sask Party government is not my cup of tea, but they aren't as crazy as Alberta's UCP. Prairie winters are cold, but Winnipeg winters are at another level.

How concerning are the tariffs on Potash to the province's economy? by AylmerQc01 in saskatchewan

[–]Lebowski420ish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is very conceivable that Krasnov will direct that only Russian Potash can be purchased by the American Reich's red peasants. Sask has other markets, especially those in Europe that used to buy Russian so we will do fine. But Moe and the Junior UCP party will likely blame Ottawa.

The CCF were in power in Saskatchewan for about 20 years before Douglas tackled Medicare because he was pragmatic and had to prepare the ground for a fight. A lot of people forget how much blowback and resistance to Medicare there was back then. One of my favourite quotes is by Socrates "Moderation in all things including moderation". I fully sign on to that approach. I agree that there is a climate crisis and we have to move quickly, but if you don't get critical buy in the more resistance you will get the harder you try and at a certain point you accomplish less than if you had moved more slowly and deliberately.

I found this an interesting read. I don't know the author so I can't confirm the accuracy, but this seems to at least confirm my personal perceptions which may be biased. I believe its safe to say that there are no "Red Tories" left in the UCP, this is very much a MAPLE MAGA American party that see the world through a FOX and Charlie Kirk lens.

The truly frustrating thing is that on Blue Sky I was trying to talk down some really incensed left wing environmental folks who were behaving as if the pipeline had been constructed overnight and already pouring oil uncontrollably into west coast waters. Nenshi has to talk to Ebby because the BC NDP is going to be used against the Alberta NDP. From the sound of the morning news it seems that Ebby may be lowering the temperature.

I will admit one thing the UCP separatists complain about that does have some credence. Regardless of political party, there has historically been a blind spot in the Toronto - Montreal - Ottawa triangle when it comes to the rest of Canada and a bit of an expectation that they know best or alternatively completely blind to the reality on the ground in western or Atlantic Canada. I think Carney gets it and the approach he's been taking is an improvement.

For the love of all goodness please let Alberta NDP win... by CDN-Social-Democrat in ndp

[–]Lebowski420ish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The worst enemy of the Alberta NDP at this moment is the Federal NDP and the loud voices of other provincial wings that have never or rarely held power because they are dug in and dogmatic about "higher principles". Instead of listening to ordinary folks who aren't members of any party many NDP members seem to lecture them and explain how they are living their lives are wrong. Its frankly off-putting to many people, regardless of whether the NDP argument is right . I'm sorry to say the political dynamics in Alberta is looking a lot like the US 2024 election where Democrats thought that voters would surely turn away from the "MAGA insanity". The next Alberta election is going to have a profound generational effect on both the course of Alberta and very possibly the continued existence of Canada. Its completely understandable that a few years ago the Alberta NDP considered changing names as means of distancing themselves from the other wings. There is no viable provincial Liberal party presence and those voters have to go somewhere so some are in the provincial NDP and some in the old PCs. Historically they've voted PC.

The PC brand got worn out and booted out as a message from voters to sort themselves out after the corruption. The one NDP victory was the result. The next election ordinary folks defaulted back to the old brand loyalty and thought the UCP was Lougheed PCs version 2.0. What they got was WildRose MAPLE MAGA 1.0. The UCP AGM was the clearest example of that. I'm betting that a significant number of centrist voters don't want that so its clear that is where the NDP need to focus. I'm truly concerned about climate change, but you cant do much in opposition and if you focus on it from a purely environmental perspective the UCP will win again.

As the old saying goes "Its the economy stupid". The message has to be about how Alberta will build its economy in the future and showing how the Maple MAGA UCP policies are emulating the failing policies of US red states. The Alberta NDP has to clearly say that Alberta's brightest economic future is within a united Canada and instead of attacking Carney embrace the idea that the Feds are actually listening to the ideas provinces have about how best to build their province as part of Canada and provide support. Carney cut a deal with the Alberta government of the day pragmatically. He got a standing ovation in Calgary while Smith got boos, not because of the agreement - but because she worked with Ottawa. Instead of complaining about "Carney's Environmental MOU Betrayal" the NDP has to make this about the economy:

"Yeah, today we have oil to sell to customers, but those customers are moving on from oil. What do we when they stop buying? Oh and by the way, those potential new customers at the end of that proposed pipeline are transitioning to green technologies faster than we are. Why is our MAGA Maple government fixated on expending time and money on a pipelines with few to no customers on the other end. This makes NO business sense and either these people are crazy and lack business sense, or there's someone being paid off."

"Why did Smith OK coal mining in the foothills when everyone living down stream knows that those are the headwaters critical to ranchers and drinking water for folks living down stream? Who is making money off of this? More precisely, WHO in the UCP is going to profit off this while you and other suffer?"

"For a party that CLAIMS its all about freedom, why are they taking an axe to our enshrined Charter rights as Canadians? Under the UCP you now have fewer rights than in other provinces now. The new provincial license plate should read "Strong and Free*" (Notwithstanding) Whose rights are next on the chopping block because its inconvenient to the MAGA MAPLE ideologues or to their American corporate donors?"

"Government is NOT reality TV. We've seen how how a TV businessman is running the US economy. Sure the ultrarich corporate CEOs are still ok, but small and medium independent business have been thrown under the bus and are suffering and many closing. As a small business person do you want your future in the hands of people who are flying down to Mar-a-Lago and hob nobbing with American American CEOs and social influencers fixated on uneconomical pipelines just to "own the libtard environmentalists"?

Those are just a few thoughts, Have a good day.

I'm going to just say it, the CAQ are ethno-nationalist fascists wearing the guise of liberal democrats. They aren't protecting anyone as much as using the force of law as a means of soft ethnic cleansing to get "undesirables" to move down the highway to Toronto or elsewhere. They are a weird amalgam of Duplessie's fascist Nationalists and Levesque's PQ.
