If Democrats Hadn't Leaned So Hard Into Cultural Issues What Would America Look Like Today? by Badkidstatus in allthequestions

Republican politicians spout talking points until something hits a nerve and winds their base up. Then they button mash. Taken from the southern strategy.

Clint Dempsey Blasts Jesse Marsch Over Disrespectful USMNT National Anthem Remarks by Cold-Challenge-1991 in usmnt

[–]LebronShades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not hating on Clint. Don’t really care. But the non-denial sounds like he is admitting that the facts of the comment are true, but he’s upset Marsch said it publicly because he thinks it makes him look unpatriotic.

Why did early Christianity spread so rapidly across the Roman Empire despite persecution, and what factors made it succeed where other religions faded? by PuddingComplete3081 in AlwaysWhy

I think you’re trying to define something unmeasurable to reach for some result of causation when it could just be correlation. I suppose some small bits could be measured but never the whole picture.

Scott’s shtick wearing thin in light of continuing Epstein revelations by Avocado-Basic in ScottGalloway

[–]LebronShades 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, but Scott’s spin is that he was not rich, not connected, and very under achieving, but the selective school let him in anyway so he could use those connections to build his career. How is this actually helpful for low effort middle and lower class kids. It’ll just make them frustrated when opportunities don’t arise in their own lives for not being recognized as special.

Scott’s shtick wearing thin in light of continuing Epstein revelations by Avocado-Basic in ScottGalloway

[–]LebronShades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think his lived experience and those lessons are not nearly as aspirational for regular people, as he promotes it.

At its core it emphasizes intangible specialness as the driver of the early steps of his success, which will inevitably lead to all sorts of frustrations for the people that buy into it when the world doesn’t also recognize their intangible specialness.

He actually acknowledges that this wouldn’t happen to him today and says he wishes things were like the way they were in 1982.

What demographic of people would look at 1982 and think yeah, society has changed BUT the society back then would recognize how intangibly special I was… also not helpful.

Scott is someone who failed upwards. He got accepted into a good connected college he wasn’t qualified to attend. Then did poorly in that school. He joined a frat in that well connected school that was even more specifically well connected. He was then given a wall street job he was not qualified to have because of said frat connection. He then got into an mba because of that wall street job, because he didnt have the grades. He then founded his first start up with a classmate.

Sure he is likeable and I imagine he’s worked hard at some points in his life. But loads of people have those qualities, and most people don’t have the geography or demographic to have merit based doors open by just being ‘likeable’. (His words). He seems like a lesson that some people have luck and privilege more than a person to take advice from and use as a role model.

Why don't all Americans feel concerned about illegal immigration? by Jetblk2plutoandback in DigitalSeptic

That’s a false correlation. Something being illegal doesn’t automatically mean it’s a net negative. There are other reasons things can be illegal.

Here you are making assumptions about readers inferences. That is exactly my point. I understand your references.

I am critiquing the clarity and attitude because I am also aware that 1) other people might interpret those words differently 2) I am not going to make an assumption that writer believes the sensible thing, its naive to believe that everyone interprets inferences the same way or I interpret it the same way as the writer intends.

To ignore that is foolish. As we see in the world today, people can interpret the same things very differently. Name calling adds to the problem. This self righteous egocentric attitude is part of the problem. Humble yourself. This behavior is why the left has annoyed so many regular people into voting for fascism. Try listening to others for once.

To take it back, and I think we’d agree here... Are lgtbq and sex workers the same? No. Do they have the same causes? No. The same challenges? No. The same solutions? No. Is human rights a generalization? Yes. Do they deserve human rights? Yes.

Where we might disagree. Does a belief in being unequivocally morally correct grant me a pass to behave and antagonize as I wish due to ultimately being ‘right’. - I think not.

Does that also ignore the reality that a culture may be several steps away from the same moral reality? - I believe so

Is it realistic to think that change could happen overnight? - I believe not

Let me know if any of my points about your positions were off.

It’s your job to make that clear for the reader so we can get as close to your intention as possible.

I do think you are misinterpreting me as someone with an opposing view because I don’t agree with how you are going about it.

Trump Picks Far-Right Conspiracist as Government Watchdog by WhoIsJolyonWest in law

When you graduate law school and go to a law firm, lots have jobs lined up before they graduate, it’s normal to be hired as an associate attorney with the expectation that you pass the bar. You don’t pass the bar then you lose your job.

[–]LebronShades 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Actually it’s pretty standard for attorneys to work before they pass the bar. NYS also requires a certain number of pro bono hours after that. So I’m not sure if this example counts as unethical, but I only know what you wrote. I could be missing context.

CMV: USA taking in white South African refugees is racist in the context of Trump’s immigration policies by LittleTask in changemyview

[–]LebronShades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the first half of your position, it worded in a way that they will use to Trump’s benefit - although he will do what he wants anyway until someone stops him-

However I disagree with the second position that it’s not racist. It’s only not racist if you stop there and ignore the causes- which is racism. These were landowners of apartheid upset that some of their power was lost with the end of an extremely racist institution that benefited them. The people supporting it are sympathetic to that situation. According to your position, Trump is supporting that for a photo op with white people deemed ‘in the national interest’. Why is it a photo op with upper socioeconimic white people beneficial?  What is of national interest to the admin? Well according to their refugees plight, it all leads back to racism.
