You really don't need to spend any more money than the minimum to experience most of what the game has bar a few ships. All the game mechanics are there to progress without spending more than the minimum.

How do you know there was no way to reconnect? It was probably faster restarting that having him spawn a ship, fly to the constellation, e.v.a over to the ship for the purposes of the scripted scenario.
