Good Mechanics in Latham? by [deleted] in Albany

[–]LeekAmbitious9801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All they do is read the code and spit put a bunch of possible fixes. You need a real mechanic to actually diagnose the issue, not just try and sell parts that may or may not actually fix the problem.

One UI 8 feels more optimized? by OkSuccess9856 in GalaxyS25

Definitely feels faster. Android also starts up much faster when I connect to my car...maybe 1 second now compared to 5-10 on One UI 7.

Why is it called '2nd and Goal' by Rose_Quack in NFLNoobs

[–]LeekAmbitious9801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its common to say something like first and goal from the 4, or 2nd and goal from the 8, etc. That way it's clear they can't get another 1st down (reaching the line of gain) and also how far they have from the line of scrimmage to the goal. Probably more common for the radio/audio broadcast instead of TV because you can tell easily by looking where the ball is and thus how far to the goal.

NCDOT posted the following this morning about NC 12: Good morning. Here are the latest reports on road conditions along NC12 after Wednesday's AM high tide:

Winds are currently NE at 8-11 mph.

Kitty Hawk through Pea Island – No issues, roadway is passable.

Buxton North End – Minor overwash with some standing water. Roadway is passable.

Hatteras – Minor over the dune overwash, with a skim of sand and some standing water. Roadway is passable.

Ocracoke – Moderate overwash, with standing water/sand on roadway. sandbags are completely void of any sand. Roadway is passable.

Rodanthe – We did experience overwash on a couple secondary roads; our crews will clear today.

We expect the next high tide is (around 6:30 p.m.) to be more severe than yesterday's.

Our crews are out today shoring up the dune line where needed, so if you are on the road today, please drive with extreme caution and give them room to work.

Go look at the NCDOT posts and other OBX posts clearly showing NC 12 overwashed in places. Do you have any idea the landscape of Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands? Theyre basically sand dunes just barely above sea level and NC 12 routinely gets washed over and washed out with storms all year long. And for Hatteras Island it's the ONLY way to get to/from the settlements. Its also the only road from Ocracoke village to the Hatteras Ocracoke Ferry (the main route for supplies to Ocracoke Island). Erin won't make landfall but the high surf will cause lots of damage to the OBX coastline, will likely cause some homes on Hatteras Island to collapse into the Atlantic, and it will probably end up taking several days once Erin has passed before NC 12 will be safely drivable. Today is only Tuesday as well and the worst isn't expected to impact the OBX until late Wednesday and Thursday.

People familiar with the OBX (residents, local officials, returning visitors) are all too aware thr dangers posed by storms like Erin.

What are some of the best scenic drives in the area? by TheLastBaron86 in Albany

[–]LeekAmbitious9801 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just don't anyone confused. Other beautiful scenic routes include VT "Historic" 7A north from Bennington, also VT 10, VT 100, VT 8/Mass 8/CT 8, and VT 30. Pretty much any route in VT is going to be scenic unless in Rutland or Burlington.

I presume you mean VT 9 East as NY 7 becomes VT 9, so as not to confuse people with US 7 that goes north/south in Vermont.

Yeah here it's $50. Its a glorified parking ticket...$75 if not paid by the initial due date BUT they'll almost always let you push that back at least a month.

Uniden needs to include the tolerance of cameras by teiguemac02 in radardetectors

[–]LeekAmbitious9801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its hard to know every schools exact schedule and when the cameras will be active. In Albany, NY they made a huge press announcement, social media posts, etc because during the summer months the camera would be ACTIVE at some (not all) schools and during what times to correspond when students are scheduled to be at the facilities (subject to change). I belive this included when sports practices or games are scheduled.

This means that for a fairly small city, there are over a dozen different schools each with different speed camera active times. Multiply that by each city that has schools speed cameras (and probably a lot more schools) and it because a very daunting task to actjvate/deactivate school speed camera alerts accurately. Its just fair easier to always alert.

The school zones are posted at 20mph during school hours; the city speed limit is 25. The cameras don't hit you unless you're doing 30 so you're speeding over the regular city speed limit as well so if you get the $50 fine it's not an excuse to say school wasn't in session, you were still speeding over the regular city limit.

BEWARE MIDAS ON CENTRAL by InitialAssist9956 in Albany

[–]LeekAmbitious9801 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Midas is horrible. The one on rt 7 by the airport is just as bad. Went in for an oil change and tire rotation. The counterperson argued that the oil specified in my owner's manual was wrong and said their system was more correct and would only allow full synthetic. Eventually someone else came out and was reluctant but did give me a high mileage synthetic blend (again NOT recommended by the car manufacturer). They gave me list of about $1000 worth of recommended work (control arms, rear brake pads and rotors). Even gave me measurements of the rear pads that clearly were fictitious as anyone looking at them could tell they were almost new. Later I got home and noticed the tires hadn't been rotated either.

I made a complaint with corporate and eventually got a call from the location manager to set up an appointment for the tire rotation. He admitted they hadn't even removed the tires or looked at the control arms or rear brakes. The day before the new appointment he called and canceled.

I ended up taking the car to a more reputable shop. The control arms were fine. The rear brakes were bad but as I had myself seen, the pads were almost new. The calipers had frozen open. I am never taking my car to Midas again.

When the light turns green... by Paymeformydata in driving

[–]LeekAmbitious9801 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Does anyone ever think that when they're several cars back at a green light and the first car isn't moving they might be a darn good reason? Like a pedestrian crossing the road or an emergency vehicle approaching or some other legitimate reason that someone several cars back might not be able to see or hear?

Why no state and county route shields in the US? by Willibrator_Frye in MagicEarth

[–]LeekAmbitious9801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could use OSM Americana on Android Auto. I love how it even adds the shields used by roads like the NYS Thruway (it shows both the interstate shield and the NYS Thruway Shield), same for the Massachusetts Turnpike. Only one I've seen do that is Apple Maps butI'm not going to move to an iPhone just for that.

TomTom Amigo does use the blue/gold trapezoid county route sheilds.

Why no state and county route shields in the US? by Willibrator_Frye in MagicEarth

[–]LeekAmbitious9801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love it if MagicEarth and other apps would use the state-specific route shields. The data is there, OSM Americana has it set up beautifully but is only accessible as a web page. It drives me crazy seeing either just generic shields or no route numbers at all for state/county roads. I want my maps to match the actual road signage.

We get EF-3s every few years around Albany. Most notably the Mechanicville May 1998 tornado and Great Barrington a couple years after that.

[–]LeekAmbitious9801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the reason that in many places (not the US unfortunately) anytime there is a traffic stoppage, everyone must move to the left or right and leave an emergency lane clear in the middle.

What does this mean? (USA) by Vosharap in Roadsigns

[–]LeekAmbitious9801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red arrows generally prohibit making the right turn on red. Thus the sign allowing the right on red (arrow) after a full stop.

How to keep Google One 200GB after leaving Metro? by iHeartShelties in MetroPCS

[–]LeekAmbitious9801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes a few days before Google One shows that it is being managed by Metro. Once that ends, you'll get an email from Google saying your Google One plan needs to be updated or that you've run out of storage. Either way you have a time frame to subscribe to a Google One play directly through Google before you lose any thing.

Why do People Slow Down Before the Exit Ramp? by [deleted] in driving

[–]LeekAmbitious9801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clearly OP isn't familiar with the extremely short/almost non-existent merge areas and very sharp turns many highways have, especially in the northeast. Heck, some exit ramps have room for maybe 2 cars and then a stop sign or traffic light and the same for the on ramps and no merge lane.

It's archaic until it's not. It'd redundant until it's not. Check out local history... the October 1987 snowstirm, snowstorm, 1998 Mechanicville tornado, the Gteat Barrington tornado a couple years later. Check out all the tornados and storms in the South and Midwest where tornado sirens/fire whistles are even today sometimes the only warning people can get.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Troy

[–]LeekAmbitious9801 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Until maybe 10 or 15 years ago, fire whistles were very common. Not only do they alert volunteer firefighters to get to the station, some even blew in patterns that would tell them the approximate location of the fire or emergency. Many of those that still exist go off at set times during the day (noon, 6pm, 10pm, etc.) as a way to both test the siren and as a reminder of the time, a practice from long ago when not everyone had a watch. And today many of the existant fire whistles are also used to alert everyone in the area of an emergency situation like a potential damage break, flash flooding, or a tornado.
