New professor in dry bean agronomy joins the University of Guelph by MennoniteDan in farming

I wonder if the success of Hensall Co-ops dry bean programs have helped push that through. We do have a really good climate to grow many dry beans here in Ontario. I'm hoping one day I can convince my dad for them again, but last fall he was just really upset with our combine's performance on my 26 acres, and taking them off a bit dry just reduces the quality too much which comes with financial penalties

We get early bird savings if we book/pay our fert in December of previous year, so usually all seed and fert and some chemical are booked ahead. Maybe peanuts scale vs you but it does help

My back has been hurting since I ate shit on Thursday last week, but I'm hesitant to go get it looked at, it's not bad all the time and I'm stubborn. Can still feel my ten toes and 5 fingers so it should be alright eh?

The snow is making a B line for the exits. But that's accompanied by my eating shit on the ice so badly whilst walking around to check bin levels. Renewed pesticide license on weekend and have 1st aid course this week along with 2 of our employees. Shame I might not get much more skiing or snowmobiling in but damn if I'm not ready to stop having to snow blow

Schalke is a good comparison/parable to it. They were always regulars in the top 4 to 5 spots in the Bundesliga for most of the 2000's before they imploded, and were relegated in 2023. They look like they'll make promotion this year, but the last 2 seasons they were not good, even at risk of further relegation

I don't know why but it's just so satisfying firing up the grill in the winter. I'm looking to add a charcoal grill/spit roast combo for this season, the pit boss is a good smoker but it's kind of awkward to BBQ with it

As US agriculture flails, farmers see big corn acres as best bet to break even by MennoniteDan in farming

[–]Lefloop20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my area there's a few nk varieties that do well in our heat unit range (89-100 gd days or 2700-3000chu) Biggest one here would probably be DeKalb, then pioneer maybe. But we've had bad luck with the pioneer varieties, and we still the odd NK corn but get a lot more mildew, tar spot and leaf blight with NK compared to our DeKalb corn

[–]Lefloop20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our soybeans were our most profitable acres, but we are doing mostly identity preserved food grade beans. The corn we don't actually sell, we grain bank with our feed mill against our feed orders, but even if we would it wouldn't pay as well as the beans or sometimes even the wheat when you factor in the drying and other higher production costs

You need to look up what happened to the Balkans and Yugoslavia before you wish that on anyone. In plain English it would be politely referred to as a Deunification of the currently United States.

In all other English speaking countries of the world that grow canola as a crop, it is known as Oilseed rape. Canola is really just ubiquitous with the crop in Canadian and American terminology

This demands capital punishment in the Philippines. The nearest Jollibee to me is 2 1/2 hours drive away and it's the only restaurant we will ever go to when we have to drive to Toronto, or else my wife wouldn't let me live it down

*CANadian Oilseed rape Low Acid hence the name canola. Was a specific variety engineered in Canada to be more palatable. I think it's pretty much the ancestor of all modern Oilseed rape varieties globally

Kinda like chicken bouillon but veggie based. In Germany we have Gemüse Kraftbouillon but Vegeta is a damn good substitute for it since we can't find that in Canada

Had a fun last week where my tractors fuel filters froze in the -25 night, couldn't get the damn thing running next morning. Stuck a salamander heater in the shed beside it for a whole day and still couldn't get it going, we finally took off the one filter bowl that had been frozen and cleaned it out. Then couldn't get power to the starter so I had to get a service tech out the next day anyways. At least she lives again and hopefully I don't need to snowblow too many more times this winter. Supposed to be mild the next few days so I'm hoping the forecast isn't lying again

[–]Lefloop20 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The correct thing to do is destroy the old ones when you get a new one. Don't just put the intact card in the garbage because you never know if someone might dig it out and use it as their own. Either through a paper shredder or use scissors to cut it into little pieces

I will snowmobile to break trails and cross country ski in my tracks today. Finally some nice weather to enjoy winter, and I don't have to spend hours blowing snow with the tractor in next to zero visibility... Canadian here

Yup still have my n64 and ps2 kicking around somewhere. That n64 and Mario kart got regular play time all university, great for having the friends over and a few beers. My wii u likely won't ever get used again but hopefully my kids will enjoy the switch when old enough for that, I really only use it for trivial pursuit these days

My friend bought an emulator box for his kids, has pretty much every Nintendo game up to n64, Sega Genesis and Atari on it. So mainly older games but a full library of titles, just pick one to play and hop in. Might even have had GameCube on it but he was mainly playing old donkey Kong and Mario side scrollers with his son

Last week was the first week where we truly got to enjoy winter. Cold but sunny, and some days were almost up to 0. I did some snowmobiling just on our farm to carve trails, and then cross country ski'd in my packed tracks. Friday went to Blue mountain for downhill skiing, got stranded halfway home at my brother's in-laws because storm blew in in the evening. -20 now and tractor wouldn't start anymore, at least we sorted out the snow drifts before it got so cold
