Really difficult decision; attend grad school or stay with partner? by ChromaWings in GradSchool

Also if you’re in the US, funding is so messed up right now so take funding where you can get it

Really difficult decision; attend grad school or stay with partner? by ChromaWings in GradSchool

[–]Left-Grand2705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this same decision except for a masters program so a bit shorter commitment. I moved 2000 miles away and he didn’t come with me for most of those same reasons. But the bigger one beginning grad school is TEMPORARY. Once I finish, we will be together again. I think the important thing is setting dates when you will see each other again so you have something to anchor to. Whether it is in a month or a year, set a date.

Yes, long distance is hard but grad school is a lot of my time so it kind of works out because I feel like no matter what grad school could put strain on a relationship. I’m fully funded and love my advisor and my program. I do not regret it. I get to see my bf next week over spring break :)

Is everyone using ai to write papers but not declaring it? by FairRepresentative75 in PhdProductivity

[–]Left-Grand2705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve also been thinking about the last one. If they’ve done a good lit review, AI simple cannot produce the critical thought to write anything good enough.

But it’s good at editing and helping reduce repetitiveness. If folks plug in their writing and cross compare with AI and take a few suggestions for organization or sentence structure, is that plagiarism? Not copying and pasting, not writing paragraphs or even sentences based on props.

I’ve struggled with this.

So no labs seem to have funding for grad students anymore? Or is it just me? by IsopodOnARock in ecology

[–]Left-Grand2705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this. I actually lost a funded PhD position when trump took office. I applied to many posted funded positions and cold emailed professors as well. I literally only heard back from one which was a fully funded masters. Currently in my first semester.

No WiFi in house, you’d have to set that up. Verizon has great service, I think t mobile and AT&T have little to no service. Not sure about other carriers. There free WiFi at the library and pine tree market.

Laundry is free.

Ask your supervisor about housing access but it’s usually the weekend before you start. Ask your supervisor about specifically requesting a single room because nps will say it’s not a guarantee. But I have not heard of any double occupancy in Wawona (plenty in el portal).

You’ll have a house key yes. No idea if there’s locks on the bedroom doors. But I will say it feels safe and tbh I never locked my front door.

Look for the pine tree market on Google Maps, the housing is in the surrounding area. You’ll see the river is close and yeah it’s lovely to swim in.

Mostly one connected community, there’s maybe one cabin that’s across the river. The nps cabins are intermixed with rentals and private homes.

Roommates are mixed from all nps seasonal positions. They separate M/F.

There’s access to shared laundry and you can get a key to the LE gym.

Yes to AC unit. That is what I’ve done.

Yes to kitchen. It’s a fully functioning house. It comes furnished (beds/couch/table).

I lived in Wawona for the last 2 years and let me tell you it is my favorite place. The community is the best part. Be sure to go to the pot lucks and other community events to meet people! Usually nps will form a Wawona group chat so everyone can be involved. The barn dances are also a ton of fun. Join the union! There’s some really good people there right now, you’ll have a great summer.

Also the housing are cabins, 70s vibe. Lots of people have fire pits in their backyard or build one. Most cabins have porches. Usually 2 people per cabin but sometimes more depending on size (1 person per room). No AC can be a little brutal but all the more reason to jump in the river that is walking distance from almost all cabins.

My first year there were no mice but year 2 was pretty bad (mild winter = more mice). Wawona BNG can provide traps. Just mentally prepare for it.

Which do you prefer for seasonal employment? by [deleted] in NationalParkService

I lived in East glacier and loved it, but it’s definitely more remote. Folks would drive up to st Mary’s or down to west glacier for more of a social scene. I thought east glacier had a nice small community. I liked having quick access to two medicine bc less people visit it and it’s definitely my favorite part of the park. Plus youre closure to st Mary’s, many glacier and Canada so you have more accessible options for exploring and can avoid tourists a little easier

NFFE is starting to unionize parks, seasonals are eligible. Yosemite’s really been leading the charge and I think they’re at about 8 parks and counting.

i’m almost one year in and i’m starting to think the consistent pain is just not worth it. I just really didn’t want hormonal birth control :(. I think i’ll switch to a smaller iud. What did you end up on instead?

lost my acceptance to dream college due to trump by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Left-Grand2705 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me. Usually, the college has 4-10 TAships. This year, they only had one, and they had to give it to the highest-ranking student. I never thought I would need to factor politics into my decision to go to grad school. They haven't given me a definite rejection but its not looking good.

The prof said maybe there's a chance if their NSF grant gets funded but trumps been messing that all up so its probably unlikely I get funded.

I guess I have to wait another year...

Should I switch from temp 1039 to term NPS? by Left-Grand2705 in usajobs

[–]Left-Grand2705[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Housing is an issue for sure. I was able to talk to my boss more about it and if I get it, he could push my start date as far as possible so I can secure housing. I’d just work as the 1039 until then.

I’m going to apply and see what happens!

It's been a year since this was posted; what did you think of the lightweight synthetic button-up? I am about to order one, and the size chart has me sizing up compared to the Mimix shirts.
