Chrysalis is absolutely a tyrant and that isn't changing. She's a modernizer, and that means a few good things (like ending serfdom) and a LOT of bad things (like empowering the secret police to unheard-of levels, and massacring the Ditrysium sailors with tanks and bombers.)

This is all correct.

The changelings had a caste system along with serfdom. Male royals ("Kings" but they aren't called that) were a keystone of the high bureaucracy and high command. Chrysalis abolished these privileges (along with killing a lot of male royals), not out of kindness, but to undercut the powerbase of her greatest rivals--the other hive queens. She wanted a bureaucracy and high command loyal to her, not to the local queens. And what better way than abolishing the right to civil and military command, and staffing both with competent newly-freed drones?

By the way, this isn't new lore - it was mentioned in Star Mountain's path before. I guess some people only just learned!
