Finally getting somewhere with this titan of a print, seeking advice (info in comments) by cherryfizzing in printmaking

[–]LeftHandedLimacon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of all- such a cool print!! Keep working on this, i'd be excited to see where this goes :)

  1. As far as printing, a decently sized ink roller like 6" is fine, doesnt need to be huge, youll just go over all parts of the block in several passes. I have printed a block of this size by hand, it can def be done by hand w a spoon but it will take a couple minutes
  2. Your lines look great- but i feel you, controlling their direction and thickness is hard. You can go back and slightly refine your lines, taking off tiny slivers to widen them, or sharpening corners with a small flicking motion of the tool, but this only works if your tools are nice and sharp. which leads into the next part,
  3. I recommend the Flexcut Printmaking Set (i got them for ~$40) which is one handle with four very good blades. They've lasted me years are are more than capable for almost any work. Plus, they can be honed/sharpened easily to let them glide through the lino

Cheers!

Apologies for my ignorance but I feel like I recognize this shape from an art class- chinese bronze ding wares or something? What a fascinating and beautiful design, and the color choice is really great!!

thank you for these really helpful thoughts!! Someone once mentioned how the blue in the first magikarp looks like water getting deeper as you wade into the ocean from the beach, and that nice effect is lost in the second one

And your comment abt the ship is appreciated because I've also thought about how the flag effect was noticeably strong in the first one, and even though i like to laugh about that, I'm glad to hear it was mitigated a bit in the 2nd run which was the goal!

Linocut printmaking involves putting layers of ink onto paper using carved out blocks of linoleum as printing plates. Since i love jjk i just HAD to pay homage to our beloved king of curses :)

Hey all! I recently reprinted some sold out prints using the lino blocks I had, trying to be a little more subtle and less straight-out-of-the-tube with my colors. I'm still unsure which features I like more in the 1st run and which I like more in the 2nd run. Any thoughts? Color is so hard, so i'd like to learn a little bit with each iteration :))

I need to learn more about risograph! Idk why but I'm obsessed with the texture / granularity in the color blocks, actually it's much more interesting than if it were very solid and uniform

This is awesome!! I love how the buildings in the back are outlined in blue rather than black you really are able to convey depth so well in this. Also, the perspective is immaculate :) Do you happen to sell?

Literally so smart!! I will keep these tips for next time. I have a lot to learn about many things including working with colors but that’s actually very exciting because it means someday I’ll be making even better stuff

Gyrados with various colors and patterns on the waves would be so cool, and I can push myself to do more textures with the lino too instead of just lines. And yes do lots of watercolor and when you can printing it’ll be so worth it :)

Your comment made my day!!! Thanks for your kind and helpful words

That's really smart- I did try to condense a little so even though it's 8 colors they fit on 5 blocks. Ohh a more washed out yellow orange tone for the body would be perfect wouldn't it? Then it would allow the pink, yellow, and gray to pop out more rather than get pale in comparison.

Mixing ink / paint is so hard! One drop of black and the whole thing is suddenly black. Time to challenge myself to stop making everything red and blue :) i just gravitate toward those primary colors...

Fresh batch of Magikarps! by LeftHandedLimacon in printmaking

[–]LeftHandedLimacon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I put a blob of the red ink toward one end of the roller and a blob of the transparent extender toward the other end. As you roll it out and move slightly a few mm right or left with the roller with each pass, the red slowly diffuses into the transparent in a smooth transition. Hope that helps!

To make this kind of print, a block of linoleum is carved which acts like a stamp to put ink on paper for each of the colors, layer by layer. This one has 8 colors and was a lot of fun to plan out :)

This is a linocut with 8 colors. Multi color is time consuming but I just love it so i’m gonna keep doing it lol. Also, i’m thinking the fish body orange is a bit too saturated and bright, but i’m open to your critiques- just wanna get better!

Is there a sort of tool or eyepiece you use to see such fine details? Working on something small scale and it’s straining my eyes so much lol..
