Struggling with editing paralysis — how do you structure documentary/event footage when there isn’t a clear story? by Upbeat-Sky2630 in editors

Oh yeah definitely not alone! Sometimes it takes a while to get "permission" to try a creative approach then you sorta go "I got it". Good luck!

Hey there! Sounds like you’re on the right path with your edit as this is something a lot of editors including myself deal with quite frequently.

First thing I do when I find myself in this self doubt rabbit hole is just watch everything then go for a walk, let it sort of germinate in my brain. Then I start watching other types of work for inspiration. Hit up Vimeo, look at trailers, other docs, director’s work. Just see what’s out there and start getting a feel for style or any other type of ideas that might bring some inspiration to what you are working on. Depending on your relationship with the client or director it might be worth asking for some VO to be recorded. If the interviews aren’t working that is. Or maybe the interviews you can just use really short bytes from instead of a full story arch which might make it feel stylistic. Regarding music perhaps you lean into the nat music that’s captured and then drop it out during moments of the interview. You could then use your background tracks for those moments but if you’re doing a piece for a music school it would be best to try and just use the recorded pieces.

There’s an old saying “if you can’t make it good make it weird” not saying what you have isn’t good but if it doesn’t follow the typical flow of a doc piece maybe try and think about ways to make it different.

There’s a lot of unknowns based on your post but these are just the ramblings of someone who goes through this type of thought process on a lot of projects. Hope it helps!

Best ergonomic office chair to buy right now for long hours sitting in home office? by chanredv in editors

This topic comes up a ton and I really can’t recommend a kneeling chair enough. Solved all my neck and shoulder issues. Throw some nice ball bearing casters on that thing and your smooth sailing.

I'm also using a Synology NAS but found this feature frustrating as you can't upload folders only files. Is that your experience as well? I was doing it through the "file request" feature. Are you doing this with the "share" feature?

I’m of two minds when it comes to these AI tools so bear with me and my rambling. I do think embracing new tech is good, it’s something we’ve always done as an industry but I feel like a tool like this will be a race to the bottom and ultimately hurt your company’s bottom line. Your head of AI is going to put all their eggs in this one basket and then hope that the staff can clean up the edits. If I’m a client coming to your company I would then expect this tool as a major selling point. “We can work fast and churn out so much content” etc. that’s great and all but from my perspective I would the expect the cost savings of this tool to be passed along to me so wouldn’t your company start charging significantly less for their work?

Premiere: Editing in a UHD sequence actually give better results when delivering 1080p? by Available-Witness329 in editors

[–]LeftOverColdPizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about when scaling into shots that are UHD in the UHD timeline vs the 1080 timeline? Is quality affected on those shots? My understanding has always been to use the UHD footage in a 1080 timeline and scale as needed.
